Charles Anthony Hicks
ODESSA — Charles Anthony Hicks, 61, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Aug. 25, 1940, in Louisville, Ky. He married
Norma Lusk on Sept. 23, 1995. Mr. Hicks was a general contractor.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Hicks of Odessa; three sons, Charles “Chuck” Hicks Jr. of Louisville, Ky., Michael Graves of Lubbock and Kenneth Alford of Georgia; four daughters, Loretta Poldrupovac of Toronto, Canada, Julie Gable of Corydon, Ind., Shannon Logsdon of Louisville, Ky., and Deanna McNally of Utah; sister, Frankie Haddock of Edenton, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Alkire officiating.

Terry Burkholder
PECOS — Terry Louis Burkholder passed away at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at his home at the age of 56.
He was born April 9, 1945, in Pecos and was the third son of the late Ralph William Burkholder and Janice Howard Burkholder of Pecos. He was married
to Billie Jean Roberson of Abilene, granddaughter of Louis and Dorothy Roberson of Pecos.
Terry attended schools in Barstow until his junior year in high school. Following in his older brother’s footsteps, he enrolled at New Mexico Military Institute and graduated in 1963. The next fall he went to Texas Tech University and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. After graduation, he received his commission and served in the United States Army in the Quartermaster Corps for two years. Terry and Jean returned to Pecos in August 1971 and he went into business for himself.
Mr. Burkholder is survived by his wife, Billie Jean Burkholder of Pecos, and two daughters, Tiffani Burkholder of Houston and Tera Burkholder King of Fort Stockton. He is also survived by his son-in-law, James Bentley King, and granddaughter, Brooke Adrienne King of Fort Stockton. Other survivors include brothers, Ben Ralph Burkholder of Houston and Mike A. Burkholder and wife, Dixie. Terry has five nephews and nieces, Dr. Duncan Mark Burkholder of Lubbock, Ralph Carter Burkholder and Ben Reese Burkholder, both of Houston, Shawn Burkholder Mitchell of Ozona and Page Burkholder Young of Dallas. There are 14 great-nieces and nephews.
While at Texas Tech, Terry was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and participated in the ROTC program. In Pecos, he served on the board and as president of the Pecos Valley Country Club and the Reeves County Tax Appraisal District. He is also a member of the Permian Basin Landman’s Association.
A service celebrating Terry’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at the First Christian Church of Pecos and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Elmwood cemetery in Abilene.
The family wants to convey a special thank you to caregivers, Victor Dominguez, Johnny Jasso and Martha Pando for the loving care and patience given to Terry in his last few weeks.

Ronnie Cunningham
MIDLAND — Ronnie P. Cunningham, 69, of Odessa, an oilfield welder, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at his residence.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview cemetery with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel.
He was born in Reeves County.
He is survived by foster son, Gumaro Marquez of Odessa; foster daughter, Lorena Marquez of Odessa; and cousin, Beverly and husband Joe Mack of Muleshoe.
Cora Ruth LaFon
PLANO — Cora Ruth LaFon, 89, of Plano passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Plano. Mrs. LaFon was born Nov. 15, 1911, in Parker County. She married
Lloyd LaFon on Feb. 4, 1934, in Mineral Wells. They moved to Odessa in 1969 where she had been a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She moved to Plano in 2000.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Monty LaFon; and a daughter, Marva LaFon Hopkins.
She is survived by a daughter, Ronda Horan of Plano; a daughter-in-law, Patsy LaFon of Kermit; a sister, Nanette Harwell of Midland; two grandchildren, Tommy LaFon of Houston and Lee Ann Greene of Abilene; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Kermit cemetery in Kermit under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Johnny Albert Ruiz
ODESSA — Johnny Albert Ruiz, 37, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at his residence.
Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon today at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Moses Garcia, Peter Moomey, Rene Ruiz, Maurice Garcia, Tony Garcia and Lori Gonzales.
Mr. Ruiz was born Nov. 4, 1963, in Odessa. He was a computer operator at Flow CO2. He was Catholic. He graduated from Permian High School in 1983 and then went to Arlington State College.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia Moomey.
His survivors include his daughter, Vianca Ruiz of Odessa; his mother, Narce Ruiz of Odessa; his father and stepmother, Pete and Mary Ruiz of Odessa; his grandfather, Celedonio Ruiz Sr. of McCamey; his four brothers, A.G. Carrasco of Odessa, Leslie Garcia of Sacramento, Calif., Moses Garcia of Odessa and Pete Anthony Ruiz of Odessa; and his sister, Mari Cruz Ruiz of Odessa.

Sue Warren Swinney
ODESSA — Sue Warren Swinney, 65, of Odessa passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at her residence. She was born April 3, 1936, in McAlester, Okla., the daughter of James and Ruby Warren, both now deceased. She graduated from Hugoton, Kan., High School in 1954. She married
Bob J. Swinney on June 3, 1956, in Clayton, N.M. They lived at several locations, moving from Puerto Rico to Odessa in 1978. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
She worked as a teacher’s aide, teacher, secretary for Phillips Petroleum, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed her stay in Puerto Rico. She loved people and travel. She said her middle named should have been “Go.”
She is survived by her husband of 45 years; sons, Brent and Darren Swinney, both of Odessa; brothers, Wendell Warren of Odessa and Wayne Warren of Splendora; sisters, Sandra Lancaster of Edmond, Okla., and Sharon Cooley of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, Heather and Michael Swinney; and stepgrandchildren, Jessica and Rana Myers.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 27, 2001, at Second Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacon Body of Second Baptist Church.

Lewis Wilburn ‘Shorty’ Alexander
ODESSA — Lewis was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Rising Star, Eastland County, to Martha Matilda Burns and Lewis Wilburn Alexander Sr. Lewis was the youngest of seven children. His father, Lewis Sr., having passed on at an early age, never knew of the unexpected arrival of his youngest son.
Lewis was preceded in death by his father, Lewis; mother, Matilda; sisters, Lillie and Henrietta; and brothers, Osburn, Luther, Brice and Fred.
Lewis was married
to Lucy Etheredge, daughter of Samuel Edwin Etheredge and Ada Durham Hall, Nov. 12, 1932, in Lamesa. They were married
48 years. To this union were born daughter, Wilma Joyce, and son, Boyce Wilburn.
Lewis had been a farmer, truck driver and custodian for the Ector County Independent School District and Medical Center Hospital. He retired after many years of service to Ben Milam Elementary School.
Lewis was preceded in death by his beloved Lucy on Jan. 25, 1981.
Lewis moved to San Marcos, Calif., in 1985. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Dick Crockett and family. He was a treasured member of that household.
While in California, Lewis participated in many camping and gold prospecting jaunts with his family. He enjoyed playing old time fiddle music. Lewis never learned to read notes, but played entirely by ear. Together with his grandson-in-law, Bailey Stump, they spent many hours playing music together. They played at retirement homes and a few local community events where they were billed as “Shorty and Stump.”
Lewis enjoyed watching his great-grandson, Jason, grow up and hearing news about his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family and friends in Texas. Lewis enjoyed country living, gospel and country music, family pets and the company of his favorite cat, Tom.
Lewis passed from this life at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital on Oct. 19, 2001, at the age of 91.
He is survived by daughter, Joyce and son-in-law, Dick Crockett of California; son, Boyce Alexander and daughter-in-law, Sonya, of Texas; grandchildren, Rick Crockett and Diane Stump of California, David, Randy and Laura of Texas; and five great-grandchildren.
Lewis was small in stature and a man of modest means, but he left an inheritance as big as Texas itself, a priceless legacy. Through his love and faith in the Father and Jesus Christ, His Son, in seeking out the “Old Paths” and endeavoring to walk therein, this legacy, this love he has passed on to family and friends to lead them to the Truth in God’s Word and salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Lewis was a diligent and faithful member of the Church of Christ.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at University Boulevard Church of Christ, East University Boulevard and Roger Avenue, in Odessa. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.

Elbert Neil ‘Pop’ Hayes
ANDREWS — Elbert Neil “Pop” Hayes, age 80, passed away the morning of Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at his home in Andrews.
He is survived by his wife, Iris; his daughters, Linda Hayes of Houston and Hilary Haygood; his son-in-law, Danny Haygood; as well as three grandchildren, Lane Haygood, Patrick Haygood and Joe Ryne Haygood, all of Andrews. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Cassie Haygood.
Neil Hayes graduated from Mineral Wells High School in 1937. He attended the Texas School of Mines in El Paso. He was a student in El Paso when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1943. He served in the Army, participation in Operation Overlord in June 1944. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded at St. Lo, France, in July 1944.
After World War II, he graduated from the Texas School of Mines and enrolled at Baylor Dental College in Dallas. Upon his graduation from Baylor in 1950, he moved to Andrews and opened the first dental practice there. He paid his way through dental school by serving as an anesthetist at St. Paul’s Hospital in Dallas. When he came to Andrews, he often had to fill in as an anesthetist at the local hospital, since no one else was available to fill the position.
Andrews at the time was experiencing a period of growth due to the oil boom. Neil Hayes was instrumental in several of the community’s growth-oriented projects. As chairman of the Board of Trustees for Means Memorial United Methodist Church, he oversaw the building of the new sanctuary. He was the president of Andrews’ first Little League Baseball Association in 1954. In 1956, he and Max Ramsey traveled to Austin to secure water rights for Andrews’ current water field. During the mid-1950s, he became one of the first directors of the Andrews Savings and Loan, an institution he helped found. In 1962, as president of the Andrews Country Club, he oversaw and chaired construction of the new building as well as the swimming pool.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 23, 2001, at McNett Funeral Home.
