E.J. Wendell Guthrie
ODESSA — E.J. Wendell Guthrie, 73 years of age, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Dec. 10, 1927, in Shallowater to Cecil and Mary Guthrie. Mr. Guthrie was a laborer in the oilfields and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Audry Tarver on Sept. 3, 1977, in Odessa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a son.
Surviving are his wife and longtime companion, Audry of Odessa; his sons, Terry Bob Guthrie of Arlington and Gary Wendell Guthrie of Odessa; brother, Neal Guthrie of Levelland; sister, Anna Twilight Acuff of Odessa, a granddaughter; six stepsons; and two stepdaughters.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military graveside services have been set for 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at The City of Lubbock cemetery in Lubbock.

Adrian Garrett
ODESSA — Adrian Garrett, 82, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital from lung cancer. He was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Commerce to Rudolph and Mae Nickelson Garrett.
Graveside services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Garrett was a veteran of World War II. He served his country from 1939 to 1945 in the First Army Battalion and was awarded the EAME Service Ribbon, the Silver Star, the Bronze Arrowhead, the American Defense Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a squad leader and operated the fifty-caliber machine gun. He was also a Sharpshooter Carbine, a Corporal in the 87 Armored FA BA as well as a member of the VFW.
Adrian Garrett married Imogene Snow on Sept. 3, 1941, in Fletcher, Okla. They later moved to Odessa from Lawton, Okla., in 1947. He was a salesman for Hydrotex and retired with over 20 years of service.
His sisters, Ruth Hallmark, Evelyn Avara and Unifaye Fisher; brothers, Tommy Garrett and Alvin Garrett; and parents, Rudolph and Mae Garrett, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Imogene Garrett of Odessa; son, Adrian “Bill” Garrett Jr. of California; daughters, Pat Gibson of Houston and Gina Garrett of Dallas; four grandchildren, Michael Gibson, Lisa Garrett Bogie, Barbara Sue Gibson and Larry Lee Garrett; and two great-grandchildren, Bryce Bogie and Garrett Bogie.
Memorials may be made to the SPCA or the charity of your choice.
Services are in the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Marissa Stacy Armendariz
ODESSA — Marissa Stacy Armendariz, 20-month-old daughter of Gabriel Olivas and Yuri Armendariz of Odessa, passed away Oct. 30, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
Marissa was born Feb. 1, 2000, in Odessa. She was non-denominational. Survivors include parents, Gabriel Olivas and Yuri Armendariz, both of Odessa; grandparents, Humberto and Amparo Mendez of Odessa and Rey and Yolanda Olivas of Odessa, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at Iglesia Del Camino located at 1101 S. Crane Ave. in Odessa, with Rev. Humberto Porras officiating.
Interment is to follow at Rose Hill cemetery. A prayer service was scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Services are provided by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel.

Bonnie Lynn Hinesly
ODESSA — Bonnie Lynn Hinesly, 79, died Nov. 1, 2001, in Odessa. She was born Dec. 29, 1921 in Greenville to John and Mankie Frasier.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at Crescent Park Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will be receiving friends tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Hinesly was a lifelong resident of Odessa and a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church.
She was survived by sons James Hinesly of Odessa and Don Hinesly of Water Lou Iowa; daughters, Laura Pool of Odessa and Linda Simpson of Ballinger; sister Renois Gidcumb of Odessa; brother Debert Frasier of Sacramento, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Arvin D. Medlock

ODESSA — The Rev. Arvin D. Medlock was born Sept. 21, 1930 in Grosbeck, Texas, to the proud parents of Reed Medlock and Elnora Archie.
I Corinthians 13:11 When I Was A Child
The Rev. Medlock moved to Odessa at a young age and was educated in the Ector County Independent School District, Fredrick Douglas School.
John 3:16 Whosoever Believeth
His faith was united in God with Johnson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church under pasturage of the Rev. E.G. Gates. He later united with the Bethlehem Baptist Church under the divine leadership of the Rev. R.S. Sutton and remained a faithful servant until he heard the call from his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to “Go preach my word.”
Proverbs 18:22 He Who Finds a Wife
The Rev. Medlock met and united into holy matrimony to Florine Beck. Four children were born to this union: Clarence, Joann, Patricia and Randy. They remained a happy couple for 40 years.
I Corinthians 4:12 We Work Hard With Our Hands
The Rev. Medlock was employed with Sewell Ford and retired after 21 years of loyal service. He later was employed with Britt Imports of Midland and in later years was employed with Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home for many years a very faithful and loyal employee to all companies he served.
Isaiah 61:1 The Lord Has Anointed Me to Preach
The Rev. Medlock accepted the call to the gospel ministry in 1966 at the Bethlehem Church under the Rev. R.S. Sutton. But the urge was so great to lead God’s people he organized The Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in 1971 with just a few baptized believers and a “whole lot of prayer.” The church grew by leaps and bounds. His fiery sermons and fervent prayers would bring the house down every Sunday. He was a praying man. He believed the prayers of the righteous man availeth much. He served in the St. Paul District Association as moderator at large for several years.
In later years, he served in the Permian Basin District Association and a member of the Southside Ministeral Alliance and other organizations in and around the city.
In 1984 he married the apple of his eye, Betty Shelton. One child was born from this union, Arvin. Betty remained close to his side attending to all of his needs until death.

Pastor Medlock left his earthly home bound for Mt. Zion on Thrusday at 6:06 a.m. “How can a preacher die?”

He leaves to mourn his passing, a devoted wife, Betty Medlock; his children, Clearance and wife, Linda of Albuquerque, JoAnn Gottis and husband, Carl of Moreno Valley, Calif, Patricia Clements and husband, W.C. of Amarillo, Robert Lee, Randy, Chandra and Arvin Jr. all of Odessa; brothers A.D. Medlock of Odessa, Columbus Medlock and wife, Janette of Odessa, Colonus Roberson Jr. of Odessa; sister, Joyce M. Thomas of Albuquerque; aunts, Inez West, Edna Fields, Idina Miller; uncle Baba Ruth Archie; several grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Reed; mother, Elnora; step-father, Colunus Sr.; brother, May and Sister, Maxine.
A wake will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church in Odessa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.W. Hanson officiating.

Jacob Xavier Brito
ODESSA — Jacob Xavier Brito, age 5, passed away at Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at his home. Jacob was a student at Sam Houston Elementary School.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his parents, Endira Brito of Odessa and Daniel Rodriguez of Midland; stepfather, Christopher Roger Galindo of Odessa; brother, Jonathan Galindo of Odessa; sister, Brenda Roque of Odessa; half brothers, Lorenzo, Anthony and Nathaniel Rodriguez of Midland; half sister, Alazaye Rodriguez of Midland; grandparents, Leticia and Romero Brito of Odessa, Ramona Trevinio of Midland, Andy Rodriguez of Midland, Olivia Muro of Odessa and Tony Galindo of Odessa; great-grandparents, Dora H. Brito of Odessa and Julia Trevinio of Midland; aunts and uncles, Zulma, Ramiro, Ricardo, Ruben, Joselyne and Jaquelyne Brito, Hugo, Manuel and Janie Padilla, Andy, Gilbert, Ruben and Bernice Rodriguez; numerous cousins; and special friends, Olga and Kris M. Cisneros of Odessa.
An angel born on this earth so handsome and precious at his birth with long eyelashes and big brown eyes welcomed to heaven as angels rise. Now as a guardian angel, he will watch over us all until the day when God will call. We all will love him, our “Baby J, ” with memories and love everyday.
