Opal ‘Eileen’ Melton
ODESSA — On Thursday, June 14, 2001, Eileen Melton went home to be with her Lord.
She was born July 17, 1920, in Healdton, Okla., to Vernon and Ella Brandon. She married
George Melton Sept. 21, 1940, and was proud to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this past year. Eileen and George put down roots in Odessa in 1960. She was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word and a very talented seamstress who created beautiful works with her hands.
She was a self-taught painter and crafter who loved to share her gift with others.
Eileen was a charter member of Central Baptist Church where she served in many capacities through the years. She loved her church and the many friends she worshipped together with.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, beloved stepmother and brother.
Eileen is survived by her loving husband, George; daughter, Beverly Ford and son Donnie Melton, both of Odessa; her brother, Jess Brandon of Moore, Okla.; and sister, Nita Lindley of Mexia. Three grandchildren, Scarlet Melton, Brandon and Stacy Ford also survive her.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Central Baptist Church, 1401 N. Texas Ave., with the Rev. David Johnson and Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Grace Cooper
Grace O. Cooper, 93, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001, at a local nursing facility. She was born Oct. 19, 1907, in Thurber, Texas. She was a resident of Odessa since 1941, moving here from Breckenridge, Texas.
She married
Henry M. Cooper on June 1, 1929, in Abilene, Texas. Mr. Cooper preceded her in death in 1956.
Mrs. Cooper was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Lady’s Jolly Club.
She is survived by sons, W.O. “Bill” Cooper of DeLeon, Marvin D. Cooper of Atlanta, Ga., Marshall W. Cooper of Beaumont, Jimmy Ray Cooper of Euless, and Preasley P. Cooper of Brady; daughters, Emma Cooper of Longview, and Clara Barr of Odessa; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be between 6 and 7 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 18, 2001, at Immanuel Baptist Church with Mr. Troy Stephenson officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Services are under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Paul ‘Ed’ Gambell
ODESSA — Paul “Ed” Gambell, 71, of Odessa passed away Saturday, July 7, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 26, 1929, in St. Jo to Robert and Mae Gambell. He moved to Odessa in 1969 from Lakenheath, England. Ed retired in July 1969 after serving 21 years in the United States Air Force. Ed also worked for the City of Odessa as director of equipment services from 1970 to 1979 and Ector County Equipment Services from 1983 to 1989. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church and also a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 955.
Ed married
Estelle Hodges on July 21, 1951, in Wichita Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mae Gambell, and brother, Robert A. Gambell.
Ed is survived by his wife, Estelle Gambell; his daughter, Paula Giesler and husband Harold of Odessa; sons, Phil Gambell of Austin and Bill Gambell and his wife Cheryl of Odessa; and grandchildren, Jonathan Giesler, Henry Gambell and Michelle Gambell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Weeks DuBose of Westwood Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers include Pat Land, Dale Land, Martin Ramos, Dennis Wilhite, Jon Dell Blair and Ken Hancock.
Public visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today.

Opal Howard
ODESSA — Opal D. Howard, 84, of Odessa passed away Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Avalon Nursing Center. She was born May 19, 1917, in Willow, Okla., to Henry and Amy Dobson. They preceded her in death.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, July 10, 2001, at Belmont Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Opal grew up in Whitharral after moving from Oklahoma in 1929. She worked as a beautician from 1937 to 1945, and then married
Wayne Howard on Dec. 24, 1945. They later moved to Odessa in July 1959 where she worked with her husband in their business, Wayne Howard Heating and Air Conditioning. She was active in the Garden Club and Meals on Wheels and was a member of Belmont Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne Howard; two sons, Rodney and Paul Howard, all of Odessa; a brother, Thurman Dobson of Levelland; four grandchildren, Kalen Altis, Gina Whitehead, Amanda Howard and Michael Henson; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family request memorials be made to Belmont Baptist Church, 806 N. Belmont, Odessa, Texas, 79763.

James Goodwin
ODESSA — James “Jim” Anthony Goodwin, age 58, of Odessa, passed away June 28, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2001, at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Michael A. Jasper officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Jim Goodwin was born Feb. 10, 1943, in Sherman, Texas, to James Tony Goodwin and Joan Marie Wilcoxon Skaggs. His parents preceded him in death.
Mr. Goodwin came to Odessa in May of 1979 after serving in the U.S. Air Force for seven years. He served as the Deputy City Tax Assessor-Collector for one year before joining the Ector County Appraisal District as Chief Appraiser-Executive Director. He married
Pamela Blair on Dec. 23, 1989, in Odessa.
Survivors include his wife of Odessa; three daughters, Tonya Jowitt and husband Dr. Alfred Jowitt of Collinsville and their children Brittney, Michael and Kaylen; Joan Johnson and husband Clay of Longmont, Colo., and their children Catherine and Henry; and Melissa French of Alexandria, Va; a sister, Rebecca Young and husband Tommy of Juneau, Ala.; an uncle, Jimmie N. Wilcoxon of Cushing, Okla.; a cousin, Janice White of Cushing, Okla.; his father and mother-in-law, Bobby and Patsy Blair of Tipton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robby and Shirley Blair of Houston, Jubel and Tammy Blair of Tipton, Okla. and his grandmother-in-law, Onnie Dosher of Tipton, Okla.
Mr. Goodwin received his Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University and his Master’s degree from Angelo State University. He was President of the Odessa Rotary Club, a Registered Professional Appraiser of the Board of Tax Professional Examiners, a Registered Professional Member of the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers, a Certified Environmental Inspector of the Environmental Assessment Association, a State Board of Professional Tax Examiners Certified Instructor and former Adjunct Professor-Political Science at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Mr. Goodwin was also on the Board of Directors of Seabury Nursing Center and Past Secretary and Director of the Downtown Lions Club. He was involved with numerous professional associations.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Odessa Rotary Club.

Pilar Arredondo
ODESSA — Pilar Arredondo Sr., 89, of Odessa, a retired baker, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at his residence in Odessa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2001, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today. Public visitation will be from 1 to 10 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Monday at the Martinez Funeral Home Chapel.
He was born in Lampazos, Mexico. He was Catholic.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Paula Arredondo; father Pilar Arredondo I; mother, Macaria Velasquez; sons, Pilar Arredondo Jr. and Frank Arredondo Sr.
He is survived by sons, Gonzalo Arredondo and wife Mary of Lubbock, Albert Arredondo and wife Adelina of Slaton, Jesse Arredondo and wife Lala of Odessa, Sergio Arredondo of Odessa, and Jay Paul Garcia and wife Lousia of Odessa; daughters, Maria Narvaiz and husband Joe of Midland, Grace Ornelas and husband Tom of Odessa, and Rosie Torres of Lubbock; and sister, Cecilia A. Guerrero of Laredo; 31 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren.

Joe E. Johnston
DALLAS — Joe E. Johnston, age 82, of Dallas, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He was born in Caldwell, Texas, to Newell and Alma Johnston.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 2, 2001, at Crescent Park Baptist Church, with Pastors Johnny Dickerson and Barry Owens officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will be receiving friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Johnston served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a First Sergeant. He married
Ida Mae Smith on May 25, 1946, in Lampasas, Texas. They shared more than 55 years together. They came to Odessa in 1957 where he owned his business, J E J Inspection Services. He served as a deacon at Crescent Park Baptist Church for many years.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Ida Mae Johnston, of Dallas; a son, Jim Johnston and wife Bonny of San Antonio; a daughter, Karen Cavin and husband Bob of Mesquite; grandchildren Jeremy Johnston, Jill Johnston, Kimberly Jackson, Zachary Jackson, Christi Morgan and her husband Chad, Kyle Cavin; great-grandchild, Carli Morgan.

James O’Connell
BROWNWOOD — James D. O’Connell, age 82, of Early, passed away June 27, 2001, at his residence. A lifetime resident of Brown County, he was a mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2001, at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Father Russell Fisher officiating. Private interment will follow at a later date.
He is survived by daughter, Karen Bell Kidd and husband Horton of Eastland; son, Dennis Bell and wife Sabrina of Brownwood; three grandsons, Monnie Prater of Big Spring, Bryan Bell of Brownwood, and Brandon Bell and wife Kim of Brownwood; granddaughter Kimmie Kidd of Abilene; great-grandson Tristan Bell of Brownwood; sister, Nettie Marie McArthur of Calif.; special friends Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Fowler of May. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers and a sister.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
