William ‘Bill’ Crook Sr.
ODESSA — William “Bill” Crook Sr., 78 years of age, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Bartlesville, Okla., to James and Ida Mae Crook. He married Geneva Wilkins on June 20, 1975, in Monahans. He served in the Army during World War II and retired from Arco Oil Co. in 1984 after 36 years of service. He was raised on a farm and loved to raise animals.
Mr. Crook is survived by his wife, Geneva Crook of Odessa; son, Bill Crook Jr. and his wife Peggy of Odessa; daughters, Linda Crook of Odessa and Mary Lou Clark and her husband Glenn of Odessa; brothers, Bob Crook of Louisiana and Hank Crook of Miami, Fla.; sisters, Jerry Yinks of Ackerly and Louise Bean of Talaqua, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home. Graveside services have been set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Clydel Chapman officiating.

Lorene Shelton Hyder
ODESSA — Lorene Shelton Hyder, 89, of Odessa went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 24, 2001. She was born June 25, 1911, in Limestone County. She married Clyde Hyder on March 10, 1931, and he preceded her in death in March 1994. Mrs. Hyder was a homemaker.
Lorene is survived by two daughters, Norvene Owen of Plainview and Rita Glasscock of Odessa; two sons, Garth Hyder of Foster, Ore., and Mel Hyder of Jenks, Okla. Her son-in-law, Tommy Glasscock, and daughter-in-law, Linda Hyder, had a very special place in her heart. She is also survived by two brothers, Clifton Shelton of Artesia, N.M., and Joe Shelton of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. K.M. McCarthick officiating. Interment will be at 4 p.m. at the Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Plainview.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice House Foundation, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, Texas, 79761.

Virginia Lee Moss
ODESSA — Virginia Lee Moss, 73 years of age, of Odessa passed away Friday, June 22, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born April 3, 1928, in Marlow, Okla. She married Porter M. Moss in Oklahoma in 1945. She was a housewife and a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by husband, Porter M. Moss, and parents, Boloy Lee and Clara Bell Robbins.
Surviving are her son, Scotty Moss and wife Kimberly of Odessa; daughter, Robbie Slaughter of Arlington; three grandsons, Corey Branch of Grand Prairie, Randy Branch of Fort Worth and Jody Moss of Odessa; two granddaughters, Sunny Slaughter of Arlington and Tracie Dardredge of Odessa; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today, June 26, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Barbara Jane Utterback
ODESSA — Barbara Jane Utterback, 69, of Odessa passed away Friday, June 22, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Detroit, Mich. She was a retired registered nurse and a Lutheran.
She is survived by a daughter, Wendy Hilliard and husband Curtis of Odessa; sister, Mary Lou Liebler of Michigan; and five grandchildren, Sam Bergstrom, Michael Hilliard, Clessie Hilliard, Truett Hilliard and Elliott Hilliard, all of Odessa.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 401 E. 42nd St.

Betty Jean Barclay
ODESSA — Betty Jean Barclay, 70, of Odessa passed away Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Aug. 19, 1930, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Miss Barclay had lived in Odessa since 1951. She was Baptist and an active member of MHMR.
Survivors are her brother, Leonard Barclay and wife Rose of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; sister, Lois Hoover and husband Douglas of Spring Hill, Fla.; three nephews, Marty, Gary and Ron Hoover; and niece, Pamela Barclay.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 19, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Chapman officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Oneta F. Thomas
ODESSA — Oneta F. Thomas was born May 16, 1915, in Sanco to Jim and Cora Preslar.
She attended schools in Robert Lee and San Angelo. Oneta married William Scott Thomas on Nov. 22, 1937. They moved to Monahans in 1940. When Scott went overseas during World War II, Oneta packed parachutes at the Pyote Air Force Base. When Scott returned after the war, they moved to Odessa in 1946, where he worked for various drilling companies until his retirement in 1979. Scott died Nov. 3, 1984.
Oneta fought a long, hard battle with cancer and heart failure until she went to join her beloved Scott in heaven July 16, 2001.
Oneta loved her church, Crescent Park Baptist, and her “Sunday School Girls”.
Oneta was preceded in death by her parents, James H. and Cora Preslar; her sister, La Veta Preslar Fulks; and a stillborn baby brother.
Survivors include her brother, Lyndal B. Preslar and his wife Maxine of Odessa, five nieces and five nephews.
Oneta will be in state at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Bernice Marie Almond
LLANO — Bernice Marie Almond, 84, of Llano died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Hill Country Healthcare Center in Llano.
She was born Sept. 6, 1916, in Santa Anna to William Jephthah Coppin and Bertha Mae Verner. The family moved several times before they settled in Fort Stockton where Bernice went to high school. While in school, she met the man who was to become her husband for 59 years, Malcolm W. Almond Jr. They married June 24, 1937, in Fort Stockton where they lived and raised their family. While in Fort Stockton, Bernice taught school, worked as a telephone operator, a sales clerk in Winkler’s Department Store, a secretary in the extension office and was active in the Eastern Star. In 1969, the Almonds moved to Ruidoso, N.M., and she worked for an electric company. Ruidoso was their home for over 20 years before moving to Llano in 1990. Always active church members, they joined the First Christian Church in Llano. Bernice worked outside the home from time to time, but loved being a housewife more than anything. She loved to crochet and made many beautiful afghans, which she gave to her children, grandchildren and friends as well as sent many to nursing homes. She was also a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Bertha Coppin; husband, Malcolm W. Almond Jr. Oct. 17, 1976; a sister, Greta Gay Hinkle; two brothers, Verner and Roland Coppin; two grandsons, Billy Bob Cleveland Jr. and Casey Craig Cleveland; and three great-grandchildren, A.J. Cleveland, T.J. Murdick and Joy Lee Murdick.
Survivors include her two daughters, Judy Cleveland and husband Billy Bob of Joshua and Dorothy Tribble and husband Rodney of Arlington; a son, Bill Almond and wife Phyllis of Llano; three sisters, Wilma Busby of Roswell, N.M., Mary Gregg and husband James of San Angelo and Myrtle Ruth Steger and husband Neiland of Borger; a sister-in-law, Anne Clary of Mission Viejo, Calif.; a brother-in-law, John Almond and wife Pat of Carlisle, Ark.; grandchildren, Joannie and husband Russ Brand of Joshua, Todd Cleveland of Arlington, Colt Cleveland of Lipan, Derek Almond of Norfolk, Va., Brett Almond of Cleburne, Shanda Spencer and husband Cliff of Spring, David Flood and wife Gayla of Arlington and Keri Murphy and husband Brian of Arlington; stepgrandson, Sean Tribble of Arlington; and great-grandchildren, Summer Maxwell, Denny Baggett, Garrett and Taylor Murdick, all of Joshua, C.J. Cleveland of Cisco, Colton and Riggin Cleveland of Godley, Ashe Cleveland of Arlington and Cody Flood of Arlington. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel in Llano with the Rev. Randall Rogers officiating. Burial will be at the Llano City cemetery in Llano.
Pallbearers will be David Flood, Sean Tribble, Brett Almond, Colt Cleveland, Todd Cleveland, Russell Brand, Brian Murphy and Cliff Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Llano or a charity of choice.

Melva Anthony
Odessa — Melva Anthony, age 67, of Odessa, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Odessa.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Melva Jean Anthony was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Seminole to Walter and Queenie Bruce. She and her family came to Odessa in 1971 when her husband, James, retired from the Air Force.
Melva was employed with the school district for 13 years, retiring in 1984. She had worked most of her time at Blackshear Elementary in the cafeteria. She loved to read.
Survivors include her sons, James Anthony Jr. and wife Weida of Denton, and Mike Anthony and wife Bonnie of Odessa; a daughter, Debbie Sweeden and husband Benny of Odessa; her mother, Queenie Bruce of Lamesa; a brother, Bob Bruce and wife Rita of Lamesa; a sister, Wyvone O’Neal and husband Pat of Houston; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband and father preceded her in death.

Mabel Howard
MCCAMEY — Mabel Lane Howard, 91, of McCamey, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jodie Windbigier and Sheldon Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Rankin cemetery with services under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of McCamey.
Mrs. Howard was born on Feb. 22, 1910, in Upton County, Texas. She was a lifetime resident of Upton County. She was a housewife and was a member of the Women’s Study Club. She served on the Rankin cemetery Association Board, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Allie Lane; her husband, Harry Howard in 1983; and a daughter, Sondra Storie in 1984.
Survivors include a son, Scott Skidmore of Reno, Nev.; grandsons, John Storie and wife Debbie of McCamey, and Neal Storie of Austin; great-grandchildren, Lane and Jonathan Storie, and Becky and Jacob Roever, all of McCamey; sister-in-law, Velma Barron of San Angelo; and lifelong friend Paul Patterson of Crane.

Ann Slade
Shreveport — Ann Slade, age 90, of Odessa, passed away in Shreveport, La. on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001.
Services are scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Jim Ray Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Slade was born Jan. 26, 1911, in DeLeon to William and Martha Carnes. She came to Odessa around 1935. Ann had attended Immanuel Baptist Church and was a sitter and companion for many over the years.
Survivors include her son, Dub Slade and his wife Patricia; a sister, Billie Little of Irving; sisters-in-law, Jimmie Carnes of Odessa, Katherine Carnes of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Blanche Carnes of Odessa; also numerous nieces and nephews. Seven brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
