A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 29, 2001, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Melvin Warren officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
She left her home in Odessa and went to Austin to be with her son Ben Sherman and his family while receiving medical treatment. She sold her home in West Odessa and bought a small cottage in the community of Sunrise Beach, a small lakefront village on the shores of beautiful Lake LBJ. This small cottage was her pride and joy and she spent many happy weekends there with family and friends, watching beautiful sunsets over the lake and deer playing in her backyard.
When Joan (Jo-Ann) was born Jan. 28, 1929, in Port Arthur, she was in the same hospital at the same time as her father, who had just been seriously injured in an industrial accident at the Texaco Refinery in Port Arthur. Her father later said that she was the reason he pulled through. He survived and lived to retire after serving 35 years with the company, coping with the loss of two limbs that occurred in the accident.
Following his example, she never complained about her illness or her loss of health and was as active as her illness permitted right up to the last. She loved the members of her Joy Sunday school class at First Baptist and stayed in regular contact with them from Austin by phone and e-mail.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Sherman, an Odessa teacher who died July 7, 1999, and her parents, John B. and Ethel Heard.
She is survived by her son, Ben Sherman and his wife Saundy of Austin; daughter, Londa Conner of Midland; and brother, John Heard and his wife Lynn of Temple City, Calif. She had six grandchildren, Lee Sherman of Austin, Will Sherman of Sydney, Australia, Jeremy Conner of Midland, Geoffrey Conner of Lubbock, Jodie Conner of Abilene and Jay Conner of Odessa. She also had three nephews, Josh Heard, Major Casey Heard, U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, and Jimmy Bunnell.
The family wishes to express appreciation to all the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who assisted with her care. Special thanks goes to Dr. William Myers and all the staff at the Texas Oncology Cancer Center in Austin. Special appreciation is given to the staff of Hospice Austin who assisted through the last days of her illness.
