Otis Edward Day
MIDLAND — Otis Edward Day passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at a local hospital.
Otis was born Dec. 30, 1918, in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County, to T.I. and Ida Espeseth Day.
Otis grew up in Mineral Wells, a town where he could ride horses, chase wild jackasses, fish, play ball and run with the rest of the kids. He played football and baseball through high school and a year at Texas Tech University.
He married
Doreen McGrew in 1941. Together, they spent World War II in California. Otis worked as design draftsman with two aviation legends, Donald Douglas and Ted Smith, on the A-26 bomber for Douglas Aircraft.
Otis became a pilot after the war and enjoyed flying for many years. He retired in 1976 as president of Southwest Explosives.
Otis spent over 25 years in retirement watching his three grandchildren grow up and four great-grandchildren play on the farm and catch fish from the pond he built.
Otis was a member of the Downtown Lions, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, National Rifle Association and Midland Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed a good, long life with a wonderful wife, close friends and family, loving children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. How could he have been more blessed?
He is survived by his wife, Doreen McGrew Day; his two loving sons, Gary Patrick Day and wife Nancy and Mark William Day and wife Vicki; three grandchildren, James Day, Charisse Rook and Austin Day; and four great-grandchildren, Ian Rook, Kelby Day, Mia Rook and Bryce Day.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 3 p.m. today, April 26, 2002, at Midland Lutheran, 2705 W. Michigan in Midland, with the Rev. Bob Barndt officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
James Neal Grimes
CRANE — James Neal Grimes, 80, of Crane passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at the Hospice House in Odessa.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Steve Baker officiating. Burial will be at the Crane County cemetery and services are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in Crane.
Mr. Grimes was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Farm Greer County, Okla., to Raymond Calvin Grimes and Lula Brock Grimes. Mr. Grimes graduated from Crane High School in 1940 where upon he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1940 to 1945 serving three years in India. He married
Mary Nell Allen Dec. 20, 1946. He retired as a production supervisor from Gulf Oil Co. in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Grimes of Crane; a son, Jimmy Grimes and wife Kathy of Abilene; a sister, Joy Grimes DuBose and husband James S. DuBose of Fort Worth; nephew, James E. DuBose and wife Tori of Fort Worth; niece, Gwynne Michelle Keyland of Fort Worth; grand-nephew, Christopher Keyland of Fort Worth; and grand-nieces, Catherine Joy Keyland, Anna Adams DuBose and Jamie Adams DuBose, all of Fort Worth.
Francis Marcel Thomas
SEAGOVILLE — Francis Marcel Thomas was born Nov. 5, 1927. She passed away Thursday, April 25, 2002.
Mom went to join our father in his many mansions. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her and loved her. She will always be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, hard work and her good cooking. She lived her life for her children and grandchildren. It has been a great loss for our family.
Marcel was preceded in death by her mom, Katie “Mama” Holt Ward; her father, W.C. Baker; husband, Jullian Thomas; and a daughter, Francis Thomas.
She is survived by sons, Bill and wife Mable Thomas of Odessa and Tony and wife Beverly Thomas of Seagoville; daughters, Ann and husband Leonard Edmondson of Seagoville and Anita and husband Marshall Flynn of Seagoville; brothers and sisters, Al Baker of Gardenia, Calif., Jean and Freddie Hart of Odessa, Carey C. and Ramona Baker of Arlington, Roy and Debbie Baker of Italy, Texas, and Bill and Norma Baker of Kaufman; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Roselawn Funeral Home in Seagoville, Highway 175.
Frank M. 'Butch' Short
ODESSA — Frank M. “Butch” Short, 56, of Colorado City passed away Saturday, April 20, 2002, at his residence. He was born March 24, 1946, in Odessa. He was a tool pusher in the oilfield.
He is survived by his wife, Lilian Short of Odessa; sons, Ray Short and Andy Short, both of Odessa, and Brent Short of Colorado City; daughter, Nadine Delcruz of Odessa; sister, Bobbye Harris of Odessa; and grandson, Aaron Delcruz of Odessa.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.

ODESSA — Eddie Lee Dixon, 74, a housewife, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at her residence in Odessa. She was born March 28, 1928, in Clarksdale, Miss., the daughter of Oliver and Pearlee Andrew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Dixon Sr.; mother, Pearlee Simpson; son, Jimmy Dixon Jr.; sister, Emma Jean Mitchell; and brothers, Fred Simpson Jr. and Jessie Simpson.
She is survived by her sons, Natchez Dixon of Odessa, Steve Dixon of Dallas and Winston Dixon of Amarillo; daughters, Lillie Session (Trent) of Dallas, Kattie Dixon (Booker T.), Dorothy Dixon, Florence Dixon and Tammy Dixon, all of Odessa; brothers, Zeke Simpson and Harry Simpson, both of Chicago, Eddie Simpson and Joe Simpson, both of Syracuse, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Idabell Moten of Odessa and Willie Ann Jackson of Greenville, Miss.; niece, Florence Cooper of Odessa; great-niece, Shirley Crowder of Odessa; and nephew, Robert McKinney Sr.

ODESSA — Memorial services for Ann Tatum, 46, of DeRidder, La., will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with her uncle, the Rev. James Carman, officiating.
She passed away Sunday, April 7, 2002, at her residence in DeRidder. She was born in Kermit and grew up in Odessa. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Odessa. She was a graduate of Permian High School and was formerly employed as retail manager for Coach House Hallmark Store and Sam’s Club in Odessa. She was a resident of DeRidder for a year. If you asked her what she wanted, she would say hugs; if you asked her who she loved, she would say Jesus.
She was preceded by her husband, John Tatum; father, Leonard Ray Carman; mother, Donna Dimples Payne; and sister, Connie Jan Carman Able.
She is survived by her sisters, Kay Bittle and her husband Jerry of Mabank and Shannon Sparks and her husband Patrick of DeRidder; dear friend, Sharla Commers and her family; numerous aunts and uncles; and many friends.
Bertha Iola Monday Brasfield
LLANO — Bertha Iola Monday Brasfield, 105, of Llano passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in Llano.
She was born Nov. 19, 1896, in Beaumont to Martha Bartle Monday and William Monday. She married
Elmer E. Brasfield. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Mary Kirlin and husband Ban of Georgetown, Mike Holt and wife Cheryl of La Grange, Syb Henson and husband Lou of Sunrise Beach and Otis Brasfield Jr. and wife Judy of Odessa; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Private interment will be held in Beaumont.

Troy L. Gerbitz
MIDLAND — Troy L. Gerbitz passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Midland Memorial Hospital and Medical Center.
He was born June 22, 1920, in Elk City, Okla., to Jesse and “Dude” Gerbitz. His early years were spent in Elk City and Canute, Okla. In 1943, he married
Dorothy Mayer in Elk City. Troy served his country in the U.S. Army. Prior to his retirement from El Paso Natural Gas Co., Troy worked in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and also overseas in Algeria from 1978 to 1981.
Troy loved to spend time with his family and his hobbies included fishing and travel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Troy is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gerbitz of Midland; daughters, Helen Glaab and her husband Lyle of Midland and Rosemary Ziegler and her husband Mike of Valencia, Calif.; brother, Wendell Gerbitz and his wife Marva of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; grandchildren, Christopher and Shannon Glaab of Midland, Krystal Garrett of Columbus, Ohio, and Johnathan Garrett of Valencia, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Craig Rhoton of Southside Baptist Church in Monahans officiating. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2002, at Fairlawn cemetery in Elk City, Okla. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Highway, Midland.

Mike Keating
ODESSA — Mike Keating was born Nov. 25, 1959, in Clovis, N.M. Mike lived in several different locations in the U.S. during his youth, the typical life for a son in a military family. He moved to Odessa in his senior year and graduated from Permian High School in 1978. Mike then attended Texas Tech University where he received his bachelor of science in chemical engineering in 1982. Mike worked for El Paso Natural Gas Co. in Jal, N.M., and Midland before joining El Paso Products (now Huntsman) in 1987 as a project engineer in the Olefins Plant.
Mike married
Sherrie Riley on Jan. 8, 2000. Mike and Sherrie enjoyed several wonderful trips in the States and overseas in their short time together. Mike loved flying, hunting, woodworking and golf. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to everyone. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and co-workers.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Sherrie of Odessa; stepchildren, Chad, Reagan and Jennifer Riley; parents, Bob and Carolyn Keating of Odessa; brother, Tim and his wife Sharon; nephews, Justin and Derek Keating of San Antonio; mother-in-law, Ruby Martin of Lamesa; sister-in-law, Glenda Stanfield and husband Eddy of Granbury; brother-in-law, Ken Martin and wife Libby of Abilene; sister-in-law, Susan Martin of Lamesa; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
