W.C. ‘Dub’ Brown
AUSTIN — W.C. “Dub” Brown, a former Odessa resident, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, in Austin. Dub was born Dec. 8, 1918, in Ennis, the son of William Coleman and Effie Sparks Brown. He graduated from Ennis High School where he was an outstanding football player and captain of the football team. He married Wilma Jo Hunt of Hillsboro on July 15, 1941, in Dallas.
Dub served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific campaign. After the war, he returned to Dallas where he began a distinguished career in the mortgage banking and real estate business. In 1956, Dub moved to Odessa to become executive vice president of Key Investment Co. and was later promoted to president. During his career, Dub served in numerous capacities in the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association. He was an active community leader in Odessa, including president of the Odessa Country Club, member of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce and president of the Permian High School Booster Club. Dub was chairman of the board of deacons and an elder at First Presbyterian Church.
In 1964, Dub moved to Austin where he was senior vice president, head of the mortgage loan and real estate departments and a member of the board of directors of City National Bank of Austin (later First City National Bank), the first bank in Austin to establish a real estate department. He was a valued member of the Austin Home Builder’s Association and the Texas Bankers Association that presented him with its Outstanding Service Award. In 1971, he was appointed by Gov. Preston Smith to the statewide Special Advisory Committee on Housing to the Texas Department of Community Affairs. He retired from First City Bank in 1982. Dub was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and served as an elder.
Upon retirement, Dub continued his lifelong passion for golf and was a member of Austin Country Club. He was also an avid gin rummy player and spent many hours playing cards with his numerous friends at the Austin Country Club and The Austin Club.
Dub is survived by his loving wife of more than 60 years, Jo Brown; his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Karen Brown; and his daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Gene Ross and Judy and John Bush, all of Austin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Courtney and Travis Brown of Austin, Robb Bush and his wife Joanne and their children Julia and Jaron of Southlake and Jason Bush and his wife Jennifer and their son Jack of Dallas. Other family members include several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 2, 2002, at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2002, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home.

Bonnie Shannon Hutson
ODESSA — Bonnie Marie Hutson, 84, of Amarillo passed away Monday, April 29, 2002.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2002, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Cook and Mark Riley officiating.
Bonnie Hutson was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Paradise to Hugh Smith and Eunice Shannon. She graduated from Pampa High School in 1935 and received a degree from the School of Cosmetology. She married A.K. Hutson in 1938 in Amarillo. They moved to Odessa in February 1943 where she was a resident until she moved back to Amarillo in January 2001 to be close to her daughter and first-born son.
Our mother had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior and was a faithful member at Immanuel Baptist. She was a loving and kind person with a beautiful outlook on life. She always took her children to church and was a strong influence in their upbringing. She had a soft voice, always forgiving and loving toward others. She was a gentle and caring mother that stayed home and was always there for her children. Being a good mother-in-law and grandmother was important to her. Her grandchildren adored and loved her greatly.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, A.K. Hutson; a grandson, Michael Jordan Hutson; and a granddaughter, Katty Marie Brown Graham. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Haywood Shannon, Raymond Shannon and W.B. Shannon, and four sisters, Jessie Grote, Mimi Jones, Ora Huebner and Aileen Shannon.
She leaves behind a daughter, Patty Pool and son-in-law John Pool of Amarillo; four sons, Wayne Hutson of Amarillo, Kenneth Hutson and wife Kathryn of Odessa, Mike Hutson of Odessa and G.R. Hutson and wife Carol of Odessa; a brother, Ralph Shannon and wife Charlotte of Oklahoma City; three sisters-in-law, Cletus Hutson of Odessa, Alene Hutson of Lake Jackson and Elsie Hutson of Nacogdoches; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. With special fondness, she leaves behind many nieces and nephews and lifelong friends, including Lorene Martz and Charlotte Glenn.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Glen Clark
ODESSA - Glen LeRoy Clark, 83, of Odessa, a retired construction supervisor, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
Memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in El Dorado, Kan. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Annie Clark of Odessa; sons, Glen LeRoy Clark III and Ken Edward Clark, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; daughter, Emily Collier of Odessa; brothers, Harry W. Clark of Odessa and Gene Clark of Menard; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William Gartner
STUDY BUTTE - William H. Gartner, 70, of Fort Stockton, a retired military major, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in Fort Stockton.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. April 28 at Big Bend Baptist Church with Steve Haggard officiating. Arrangements by Fort Stockton Funeral Home.
He was born in Houston and had been a resident of Alpine. He was an Army veteran. He was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Sons, Chris Gartner of Alexander, Va., Karl Gartner of Rockhill, S.C., and Steve Gartner of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; daughters, Mimi Gartner of Newport News, Va., and Dayle Burkhart of Brenham; sister, Ann House of Sunrise Beach; and 2 grandchildren.

Albert Savalick
ODESSA - Albert “Sonny” Savalick, 55, of Odessa, a retail sales manager, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
No services are scheduled. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
He was born in Herrin, Ill.
SURVIVORS: Son, Scott Savalick of Hometown, Ill.; and sisters, Maxine Brown of W. Frankfort, Ill., Rena Carron of Eureka, Mo., and Jackie Trumble of Odessa.

Billie Townes
DENVER CITY - Billie Sue Townes, 81, of Denver City, a retired insurance manager for APOR Insurance Co., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at her residence.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Denver City Memorial Park with the Rev. Bob Webb officiating. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. Arrangements by Boyer Funeral Home.
She was born in Greenville. She was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Son, Ralph Townes Jr. of Dallas; daughter, Suzanne Duvall of Lubbock; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Natalie Brown Philpot
DALLAS — Natalie Brown Philpot, age 96, of Dallas passed away peacefully to her Savior on April 24, 2002, at Baylor University Medical Center due to complications of a stroke in October 2001.
Beloved mother and best friend, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, she was affectionately known as “Nannie.” She was born April 6, 1906, in Booneville, Ark., to Sam and Pearl Brown. Her life was one of devotion and servanthood to her family and Lord. She was the loving wife of a Baptist minister who pastored and organized many churches throughout Texas in Houston, Waco, Amarillo, Odessa, where he pastored at Northside Baptist Church, and Dallas. She was an active partner in ministry with her husband through leadership in various departments by teaching Sunday school and serving as counselor in G.A.’s and president of the WMU. She was a very energetic and vivacious person with many outstanding talents, some of these being china painting, cooking, homemaking and most of all, a professional seamstress. She worked at Bonds as a salesperson before spending more time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Sallie Pearl Brown; brother, Buren B. Brown; and her devoted husband, Stephen Reid Philpot.
She is survived by her two daughters, Betty Jean and husband Curtis E. Leftwich of Seagoville and Sandra and husband Cleo Haddock of Mesquite; stepson, Don L. Philpot of Carlisle, Ark.; sister-in-law, Ida Brown of Fort Worth; five grandchildren, Gary and wife Kathy Leftwich of Rowlett, Brenda and husband Wayne Walker of Sunnyvale, Stephen Chittenden of Dallas, Stacy and wife Denise Morris of Rowlett and Stephanie and husband Jason Walker of Rowlett; eight great-grandchildren, Wendy, Chad, Kevin, Chris, Jessica, Ashlee, Colton and Abbie; four great-great-grandchildren, Autumn, Heather, Hunter and Cade; plus many dear friends, with special thanks to the loving caregivers at Christian Care Center in Mesquite.
She will always be remembered as a loving and wonderful mother and grandmother (“Nannie”) by her Christian example of a giving attitude and courageous spirit. She will be tremendously missed by her loved ones, yet we rejoice in her going home to be with her Lord and Savior.
Services to celebrate and honor her life will be held at 10 a.m. today, April 27, 2002, at Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church, 9810 La Prada, Dallas, 75228, with Dr. Dennis Hochgraber officiating. Interment will follow at Grove Hill cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the MED (Mission East Dallas) through Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church.

James H. “Smitty” Smith
HENDERSON — Funeral services for James H. “Smitty” Smith, 72, of Henderson will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2002, at Crawford-A. Crim Chapel with the Revs. Bill Denham and Gary Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will be at Moyers cemetery under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim in Henderson.
Mr. Smith died April 26, 2002, in Henderson. He was born Aug. 5, 1929, in Pine Hill Community. He was a retired district superintendent for Halliburton Services in Sonora.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Smith, and stepfather, Joe Frank Smith.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Shirlene E. Smith of Goodsprings Community near Henderson; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Don and Karen Smith of Goodsprings Community near Henderson; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bobby Ransom of Midland-Odessa; and grandchildren, James Franklin of Odessa, Starla Graham of Lubbock and Glenn Haskins Elliott of Dallas.

Maxine Simpson Warden
ANDREWS — Services for Maxine Simpson Warden, 85, of Andrews will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2002, at McNett Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Minister Lynn Money of Sherwood Church of Christ of Odessa. Burial will follow at the Andrews West cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Maxine was born June 13, 1916, in Olney to Ellis and Zula Ward. She was raised in and around Tipton, Okla., where she graduated. After graduation, she came on the train to McCamey to marry Willard Simpson, who was an employee of Shell Oil Co. Like many oilfield families, she lived in many areas of the Permian Basin. The majority of her life she lived in Odessa and was a founding member of Sherwood Church of Christ. After the death of her husband, she worked for Cobbs Department Store and later Town and Country Drug Store. She later married L.A. Warden of Andrews, who preceded her in death in 1984.
She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Nail of Odessa; a son, Charles Simpson of Andrews; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She adored West Texas, was proud of her heritage, which reached to the founding of Tennessee, found pride in her work, treasured her family and truly loved her church. She passed quietly in her sleep April 25, 2002.

Guadalupe Baeza
MARATHON — Guadalupe Salmon Baeza, 82, of Torrance, Calif., a homemaker, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at her residence.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Rick Ruiz officiating. Burial will follow at the Marathon cemetery. Arrangements by Geeslin Funeral Home.
She was born in Marathon and had been a resident before moving to California in 1996. She was Catholic.
SURVIVORS: Daughters, Anita B. Wilson of Falls Church, Va., and Maria M. Baeza of Torrance; sister, Isabel Terrazas of Las Cruces, N.M.; brothers, Edwardo Salmon of Marathon and Emilio Salmon of Alpine; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Lois Beam
ADAMSVILLE — Lois Oleta Beam, 76, of Adamsville, a homemaker, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Adamsville Baptist Church with Jerry Stratton officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery in Lampasas. Arrangements by Sheppard Funeral Home.
She was born in Goldbusk. She was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Husband, Chester H. Beam of Adamsville; sons, Jesse McCoy of Robstown, Winston Beam of Buckholts, Kenneth Beam of Forney, Chester Beam of Odessa, Lester Beam of Morgan City, La., and Christopher Beam of Springtown; sisters, Meretta Mae Cain of Kingsland and Norma Lee Blair of Bastrop; brothers, H.E. Sharp of Lampasas and H.J. Sharp of Fort Worth; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Alberta Miller
ODESSA — Alberta John Coburn Miller, 88, of Wichita Falls, a homemaker, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, in Wichita Falls.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
She was born in Bonham and had been a longtime resident of Odessa before moving to Wichita Falls in 1997.
SURVIVORS: Nephew, Tommie B. Rowe Jr. of Electra; and nieces, Nina J. Jones of Knoxville, Tenn., and Alberta L. Robinson of Wichita Falls.
