DENVER CITY — Oscar Rodriquez Gonzalez, 58, of Denver City, a roughneck, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Yoakum County Hospital in Denver City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Templo Calvario Asamblea de Dios with the Rev. Juan Soto officiating. Burial will follow at Denver City Memorial Park. Arrangements by Ratliff Funeral Home.
He was born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Erma Hicks
GOLTHWAITE — Erma Pearl Hicks, 88, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Hospice House.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Duren cemetery in Mills County. Arrangements by Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home.
She was born in Mills County.

Joe Puga
STANTON — Joe Puga, 94, of Stanton, a retired self-employed mechanic, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at a Stanton care center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Stanton Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Ernie Sanchez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at Stanton Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery. Arrangements by Stanton Memorial Funeral Home and Chapel.
He was born in Colorado City and was a longtime resident of Stanton.

ODESSA — Linda “Lynn” Rose Reed, 48, of Odessa died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the Hospice House.

Birl Clifton Cox
COLORADO CITY — Mr. Birl Clifton Cox, 79, of Odessa, formerly of Colorado City, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Hospice House in Odessa.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, March 12, 2002, at the Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Manning officiating under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mr. Cox was born to Birl and Sarah Cox on April 8, 1922, in Roswell, N.M. He married
Elsie Mae Jamison on Sept. 30, 1946, in Odessa. She preceded him in death Dec. 11, 1994, after 46 years of marriage. He retired from the State Highway Department on Sept. 27, 1985. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a resident of Colorado City since 1950.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, George Cox and Earl “Cotton” Cox; four sisters, Arlena Fowler, Nollie Huddleston, Irene Honey and Izora Pride; and a grandson, Christopher Holm.
He is survived by two daughters, Deloris and husband Ray Stockton and Sylvia Marinovich and Thomas Tate; two sons, Darvin and wife Cindy Cox and Marvin Cox, all of Odessa; grandchildren, Monica Cox of Corpus Christi, RoseAnn Holm, Alex Cox, Rachel Cox and Haley Marinovich of Odessa; two great-grandsons, Dennis Darvin Cox of Corpus Christi and Jesse Cole Lucero of Odessa; sisters, Lorene Holman of Littlefield and Glenda and husband Vernon Gill of Garden City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret Johnston Hugghins
MIDLAND — Margaret Johnston Hugghins passed away Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Hospice House in Odessa of heart failure.
She was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Eureka to William and Allie Johnston.
Margaret was a cosmetologist in Crane in 1937 when she met Blondy Hugghins. They were married
June 16, 1940. She was later employed by the U.S. Air Force, McClelland Field, in Sacramento, Calif., and Western Electric in Baltimore, Md., while her husband served in the military. She returned to Crane in 1945 to manage a beauty shop. Later she was employed by Southern Union Gas Company, Texas Electric Utility and Crane Memorial Hospital.
In 1960 the family moved to Midland where Margaret began a career as a medical assistant for various doctors, retiring in 1975. She was active in Business and Professional Women’s Clubs in Crane and Midland. Margaret made church attendance a family priority. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
Margaret valued her friendships the most. She enjoyed entertaining, painting and home decorating. Her artistic creativity has touched many lives and created wonderful memories for her family and friends.
Margaret is survived by her husband, John H. Hugghins of Midland; son, Ted J. Hugghins and daughter-in-law Cathy of Fort Dodge, Iowa; daughter, Hedy Sawyers and son-in-law Buz of Garland; sister, Wanda McCarley of Riverside, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Taylor Sawyers, Sam Sawyers, Seth Hugghins, Luke Hugghins and Hope Hugghins.
A visitation will be held today, March 12, 2002, between the hours of 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home.
Visitation will also be held Wednesday, March 13, 2002 between the hours of 12:15 and 12:45 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Gault, E.W. Matthews, Roy Blair, Mark Parker, Bob Jones, Henry Urban, Jeff Bergstrom and William Hernandez.

J.T. 'Pete' Mitchell
ODESSA — J.T. “Pete” Mitchell, 81, of Odessa passed away Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Hospice House. He was born Nov. 12, 1920, in Coleman to John and Adell Mitchell. He was an Army veteran. He was a pipeline specialist for El Paso Natural Gas Co. where he worked until he retired in 1985 after 32 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Temple Baptist Church and a longtime resident of Odessa. He married
Margueritte Hamilton on June 18, 1938, in Coleman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Omar Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margueritte “Reet” Mitchell; daughter, Janice Barron of Odessa; two sisters-in-law, Bobbie Henderson of Midland and Ella Mitchell of Cuero; two grandchildren, Boyd Barron and wife Kelly of Monahans and Jamie Bryan and husband Dale of Odessa; and four great-grandchildren, Jena Tisdale of Midland, Mitchell Barron of Monahans and Natosha and Trey Bryan, both of Odessa.

Arthur L. ‘Dugan’ Connell
ODESSA — Arthur L. “Dugan” Connell passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born March 23, 1919, in Gatesville to Allen and Myrtle Connell.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002, at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Thomason officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He joined the Navy in 1939. He received several medals during his tour of duty including the Prisoner of War Medal and Purple Heart.
He married
Francis Edna Coe on Dec. 1, 1945, in Vernon. She preceded him in death in 1994. He was the co-owner of Dugan’s Body Shop from 1979 to 1993 and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
He is survived by sons, Jimmy Wayne Connell of Midland and Richard A. Connell of Odessa; sister-in-law and caregiver, Mary Reynolds of Odessa; brothers, Charles Connell of Tucson, Ariz., and Allen Connell Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev.; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Helen Lucille Cook
KINGSLAND — Helen Lucille Cook passed away peacefully with her family at her side Sunday, May 26, 2002. Her services were Tuesday, May 28, 2002.
Helen was born May 8, 1922, in the farming community of Cottonwood to Augusta and Angus Urbanovsky. She was the youngest of 10 children whom have preceded her in death.
Helen married
L.D. Cook on Aug. 8, 1942, in Alexander, La. Helen and L.D. lived in several states before settling in Midland in 1949. They lived there until 1962 and moved to Odessa until their retirement to Kingsland in 1979. She was a homemaker and worked for American Optical Corp. Helen was a member of the Fort Worth and Jax Church of Christ in Midland, the Eisenhower Church of Christ in Odessa and Highland Lakes Church of Christ in Kingsland. She was an avid gardener and great cook. Helen was famous for her home canning and homemade desserts.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, L.D.; her daughter, Jerry Woolard of Kingsland; son, Dale and daughter-in-law Valerie of Odessa; granddaughters, Penny Pickett and husband Tony of McKinney and Jogee Comegys and husband Wick Comegys of Kerrville; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home provided the arrangements with interment at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park.
George Hale
GORDON — George Hale, 75, of Gordon passed away Sunday at a Weatherford hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Gordon with the Rev. Michael Orsini officiating. Burial will be at New Gordon cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Strawn. The family will have visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Hale was born Oct. 29, 1926, to Harvey and Lucille Hale. He grew up and attended school in Gordon. He worked as a contract pumper in the oilfield working in many different areas in West Texas, especially Winkler County. He married
VaRue Crenshaw Gay on July 7, 1972, in Mingus, and she preceded him in death Oct. 27, 1997. They lived in Wink for a number of years where Mr. Hale was a member of the Wink Masonic Lodge. They moved back to Gordon in 1995. Mr. Hale was a World War II Navy veteran and a Protestant.
Survivors include three stepdaughters, June Sperling of Weatherford, Nancy Cockburn of Santo and Sheila Boyd of Gordon; three brothers, Bill Hale of Cleo Springs, Okla., Harvey Keith Hale and Tom Hale; a sister, JoAnn Bearden of Mingus; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
