Betty Jo Nicholas
ODESSA — Betty Jo Nicholas, 74, of Odessa passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, in Odessa. She had lived in Odessa for 55 years.
Betty Jo was born in Coleman and grew up in Eastland where she was a 1945 graduate of Eastland High School. She married
Lester Nicholas on Aug. 1, 1946, in Eastland.
She was a wonderful homemaker and an excellent mother. She was involved in Girl Scouts, band boosters, Sunday school teaching, club sponsoring and in helping to raise the children of many friends. She was a great fan of the Dallas Cowboys and an avid supporter of Mojo. She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Clara Young; two brothers, Jim and Charles Young; and two sisters, Mary Perry and Beatrice Moylan.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lester Nicholas, and four daughters, Sherry Westbrook and husband Mike of Plano, Sandy Goode and husband Alan of Eastland, Leslie Nicholas of Austin and Lana Nicholas and husband Robbi of Odessa. She had four grandchildren, Michael and Nicholas Westbrook and Grady and Levi Goode. Betty is also survived by a sister, Pat Miller of Lindale, and many nieces, nephews and other family members.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 3, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Earl Elbert Covington Sr.
MONAHANS — Mr. Earl Elbert Covington Sr. (Teddy) was born to the late Louis King Covington and Mattie Mae Covington on April 11, 1918, in Brady. He passed this life March 30, 2002. He married
Sewellow Alexander on Nov. 7, 1940. To the union of this marriage, 13 children were born. Earl was one of the first black men to be drafted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his country from April 4, 1944, to Dec. 7, 1945. He received an honorable discharge as private first class. Afterward, he moved to Monahans and became a truck driver and furniture mover for Jim L. Jordan for 25 years.
His wife, Sewellow, and daughters, Louise Breedlove and Linda Thomas preceded Earl in death.
Teddy leaves to mourn his children, Earl and Susie Covington of Quail Valley, Calif., Robert and Catherine Covington of Lubbock, Ruby Ramsey of Midland, Elbert and Evergreen Covington of Columbus, Ga., Louis Covington of Atlanta, Ga., Kathy Smalls of Houston, Earl Dean and W.T. Garrett of Lubbock, Rose Mary Covington, Betty Hayes, Richard and Barbara Covington and Melvin Covington, all of Monahans. Other survivors include two brothers, Rev. James Covington of Hamlin and Roosevelt Covington of Monahans; 38 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Faith Temple Church with burial at Monahans Memorial cemetery. Services are under the direction of Harkey Funeral Home.

ODESSA — Ray B. Athey, 70, of Odessa passed away Thursday, June 27, 2002, at his home. He was born Aug. 31, 1931, in Weldon to Bascom Athey and Ora Adams.
Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Midessa Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Nick Gates officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven cemetery in McCamey.
Ray married
Julia Dale Trammell on April 21, 1951, in Crane. He worked for Ruthco when they moved to Odessa in 1962. He then worked for Texas Tanque and Athey Tank before retiring in 1994. He enjoyed woodworking, tinkering, fishing, golf, square dancing and his family. He was a member of the Lions Club and a member of Midessa Heights Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by both parents and his sister, Betty Athey.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Julia Dale of Odessa; son, Dennis Ray Athey of Livingston; daughter, Debra Kay Chastain of Odessa; sister, Carol Jean Anderson; grandchildren, Douglas Ray Athey, Darci Rebecca Athey, Leanna Dale Athey and Julia Elizabeth Chastain; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Kay Chastain and Jared Ray Chastain.

PAMPA — Eben D. Warner Jr., 85, of Pampa died Thursday, June 27, 2002, in Pampa.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, June 29, 2002, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Penrod, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Chillicothe cemetery in Chillicothe under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
He was born June 15, 1917, in Chadron, Neb. He graduated from Amarillo High School and attended Oklahoma State University, West Texas State University and received a law degree from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. He married
Alice Tabor on Oct. 23, 1937, in Little Rock, Ark. He was an independent oil producer and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of 65 years; his daughter, Thera Warner Scott of Canyon; his son, Eben D. Warner III and wife Ludie of Odessa; his son, Mark Warner and wife Cay of Pampa; eight grandchildren, Lee Scott, Tol Scott, Theron Scott, Matt Scott, Morgan Fuller, Allison Warner, Rebekah Warner and Mary Alice Warner; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ODESSA — Pedro Gameros Tercero went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born June 29, 1909, in Marfa. He married
Dometilla Rodriquez. He was a painter by trade.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Abelardo Tercero and Adelberto Tercero; wife, Dometilla; grandsons, Steven and Lorenzo; and great-grandson, Eddie.
He is survived by his daughters, Maria Elena Natividad of Dallas and Lucy Fuentes of Odessa; son, Jose Tercero and wife Gloria Tercero of Snyder; 26 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Chavez officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
