She was born in Odessa and was a lifelong resident. She was Baptist.

Asuncion Serrano
ODESSA - Asuncion Madrid Serrano, 47, of Odessa, a self-employed landscaper, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Texas Center for Infectious Disease in San Antonio.

McCAMEY - Joe H. Walker, 73, of McCamey, a retired oilfield production foreman, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.

He was born in Kingsville and was a resident of McCamey since 1970. He was an Army veteran. He was Baptist.

David B. Franco
ODESSA — David B. Franco was born April 4, 1948, in Ft. Stockton, TX. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday, August 3, 2002, at the Home Hospice House in Odessa. David will be missed dearly by his family and friends, but one can find comfort knowing that he had Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior and is now enjoying a wonderful eternal life in Heaven.
David is survived by his four children: Celina Davis of Lubbock, TX, Seydia Adkins and Hope Franco of Terrell, TX, and David Rey Franco of Lubbock, TX. He is also survived by his parents, Florentino (Tino) and Esperanza Franco of Odessa, TX, and his siblings: Noe Franco, Toby Franco and his wife Frances, Rafael Franco and his wife Rosie of Odessa, TX, and Ines Fatzinger and her husband David of Ayer, MA. Other survivors include his five grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. His grandson, Andrew Davis, and nephew, Zachary Franco, preceded him in death.
David served his country with distinction in the U.S. Air Force and was awarded the following: Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with Two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Overseas (Short) Tour Ribbon, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with One Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. After 17 years of service, David was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1986 at the rank of Staff Sergeant.
David will be remembered as a big man who had an even bigger heart. He was a very happy person who truly loved life no matter what obstacles were before him. He was always helping others and enjoyed being around all his family and friends and they could count on him when needed. He loved to travel and was musically gifted. Blessed by these gifts from God, he is now using them to praise the King of Kings. David was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Mass in his honor will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at 12 noon at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Odessa, TX with Father Frank Chavez officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements are by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel.
Ana Hatchett
ODESSA — Ana Hatchett, 69, a housewife, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Medical Center hospital.
Mrs. Hatchett lived in Odessa all her life.
Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at Martinez Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
She was born in San Pedro Coahuila, Mexico, to the late Apolonio Jimenez and Herlinda Gallegos.
She is survived by son, Luis Hatchett of Seattle, Wash.; daughters, Elizabeth Hernandez and husband Richard of Hobbs, N.M., Connie Munoz and husband Larry Kasko of Torance, Ca., and Sandra Davila and husband Manuel of Odessa; brothers, Rafael Jimenez and Isaias Jimenez, both of Del Rio; sisters, Noemi Munoz of Clint, Herlinda Jimenez of Acuna, Mexico and Elizabeth Chavez of Juarez, Mexico; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

ODESSA — Columbus Medlock, 66, a retired mechanic, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Plano Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.W. Hanson officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
He was born June 18, 1936, in Limestone County, Texas.
He was a Baptist.
He is survived by wife, Janet Medlock of Odessa; son, David Earl Medlock of Odessa; daughter, Inez Marie Medlock of Arlington; brothers, A.D. Medlock and Colonus Roberson, both of Odessa; sister, Joyce Marie Thomas of Albuquerque, N.M.; uncles, Joseph Archie of Clovis, N.M., Babe Ruth Archie of Odessa and E.J. Archie of Houston; aunts, Idena Miller and Edna Fields, both of Odessa, and Inez Wess of Dallas; five grandchildren, Trameka Medlock and Breslum Medlock, both of Odessa, Le’Darion Medlock of Arlington, David Earl Medlock II and Krystal Medlock, both of Lewisville and two great-grandchildren, Quantray Medlock and Aubreana Medlock, both of Odessa.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elnora Archie Roberson and father, Reed Medlock and the late Rev. Medlock and stepfather, Colonus Roberson.

Betty J. Friesinger
KINGSLAND — Betty J. Friesinger, 82, of Marble Falls passed away Aug. 10, 2002, at her home.
Betty had been a resident of the Highland Lakes area for 20 years, coming from Odessa, Texas. She was born July 31, 1920, in Drumwright, Okla., to Herman and Myrum Rebecca (Slusser) Courington. On June 9, 1945, Betty married
Peter H. Friesinger in Little Falls, Minn.
Betty made a huge impact on many lives as a teacher. She taught school at an Oklahoma high school, as well as San Angelo High School, Odessa High School and was an instructor at Odessa College for many years, where she served as chairman of the business administration department. She was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, past President of Delta Iota Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma from 1968 to 1970 and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Odessa. Betty received such honors as Woman of the Year, Delta Kappa Gamma in 1968, Business Teacher of the Year from 1971 to 1972 and was listed in Personalities of the South and the World Who’s Who of Women.
Betty is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Major of Marble Falls, Texas; a sister, Geraldine Kirk of Little River, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet with the Rev. Tommie Beck officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Byron Major, Steven Major, Eric Alvarado, Mac Cook, Gary Cook and Kenny Osborn.

James H. ‘Jim’ Parmelly
ODESSA — James H. “Jim” Parmelly, 87, of Odessa passed away after a lengthy illness, Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002. He was born Sept. 3, 1914, to Ford John and Dena Mae Duncan Parmelly in Sherman, Texas.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Steve Trout officiating.
Jim graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1937.
He married
Esther Liebscher on June 12, 1938, in Galveston, Texas. Jim came to Odessa in 1940 from Pampa, Texas. He worked as an electrical engineer for Exxon for 43 years before retiring in 1978. He was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, member of the Couples Class, Exxon Annuitant and Registered Professional Engineer.
He was an avid fisherman, loved to hunt and loved his Boston terriers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a caring friend and neighbor.
His father and mother preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Esther Parmelly of Odessa; only son, Donald Parmelly and wife Eve of Odessa; one sister, Alice Davisson and husband Bob of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Jack Parmelly and wife Sandy of Visalia, Calif. and Paul Dick Parmelly of Dallas, Texas; four grandsons, Brian Parmelly of Los Angeles, Calif., Jay Mitchell and wife Lisa of Fort Meade, Md., John Mitchell and wife Judy of Albuquerque, N.M., and Joseph Mitchell and wife Hollie of Hanau, Germany; four great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Charles Liebscher and wife Ingrid of San Diego, Calif. and Everett Liebscher of Odessa and one sister-in-law, Alvera Liebscher of La Grange, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions in honor of Jim be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, the First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.

Mitchell V. Arnold
ODESSA — Mitchell V. Arnold, age 82, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at his home.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Emmett Barnard officiating.
Mitchell was born June 30, 1919, in Corinth, Miss., to Fred and Elzadie Arnold. He married
Lurlie Glisson on Oct. 8, 1938.
Mitchell moved his family to Odessa in 1953. He worked in pipeline construction for a time, then went into business for himself with Arnold’s Ditching Service from which he retired in 1987. Mitchell was a member of Westover Baptist Church.
Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a daughter.
He is survived by his wife, Lurlie Arnold of Odessa; a daughter, Shirley Killion and husband Kenneth of West Des Moines, Iowa; two sons, Olen Arnold and wife Pat and Mitchell H. Arnold and good friend Val Abbott, all of Odessa; a brother, Inell Arnold of Walnut, Miss.; a sister, Verdie Lee English and husband Arlas of Guys, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Kirk Killion and wife DeAnn of Oklahoma City, Okla., Angela Arnold and Jamie Arnold of Frisco and Lisa Grissom and husband Craig of Odessa; and a great-grandchild, Danielle Killion of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Vinia Jean Bledsoe
ODESSA — Mrs. Vinia Jean Swoopes Bledsoe passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born June 18, 1934 in Lott, Texas, to Mr. Mack Swoopes Sr. and Mrs. Inez Truesdale Swoopes. She began school in Kansas City, Mo. She was one of seven children, two of whom have preceded her in death.
The family moved to Odessa in 1941, and she resumed her education in Ector County Independent schools; first at Douglas Elementary School and later at Blackshear Jr./Sr. High School. She was very active in basketball and track and field, as she lettered in both.
She later attended Odessa College and Wilson’s Beauty College from which she graduated. Immediately after graduation, she became an operator at Bivian’s Beauty Salon where she worked for many years before she retired. She was later employed by Texas Electric Service Co. for 17 years before retirement.
Mrs. Bledsoe was married
to Mr. Lawrence Bledsoe Sept. 4, 1955, by the late Rev. W.R. Ockletree, pastor of St. James Baptist Church, where she was a member.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Roscoe S. Sutton officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two siblings, a brother and a sister.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Bledsoe of Odessa; one son, Vincent Bledsoe of Houston; brother, Mack Swoopes Jr. of Odessa; sisters, Willie Ruth Houston of Harrisburg, Penn., Billy Swoopes and Jackie L. Hammond and her husband Lee R. Hammond, all of Odessa; two uncles, William Swoopes of Kansas City, Mo., and James Truesdale of Lott; two aunts, Addie Ruth Butcher of Oakland, Calif. and Freddie B. Taylor of Dallas; three nieces; twelve nephews; and a host of other relatives.
