Tonya was born on May 12th to Gwen Matthews and the late Charles Matthews, Sr. She grew up in La Marque. Tonya received a bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin University and was part of the management staff at Continental Airlines for 13 years. She presided in League City with her husband and son. preceded in death by her father, Charles Matthews, Sr and grandfather, O'Neal Matthews, Sr. Survived by devoted husband, Adrien White, playful sun, Matthew James; step daughter, La Coria; loving mother, Gwen Matthews; devoted sisters and brother, Gail Roberts (Lucian), Chanda Walker (Clarence "Duke") and Charles Matthews, Jr.; beloved grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. A.C. Ulrich and Mrs. Myrtle Matthews; uncles, Harold Fields and A.C. Ida Ruth Sims Gates
WEST TEXAS CITY — On Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at 6:00 p.m., the family and friends of Mrs. Ida Ruth Sims Gates gathered at Lincoln Auditorium, 6006 Carver in Texas City to celebrate her life and legacy.
Ida Ruth Moore was born in Plum, Fayette County, Texas to the union of Kenny and Delphia Moore, August 27,1919.
She received her early schooling in one room school houses at the Mt. Zion Public School Plum, Texas and attended LaGrange Colored High School and graduated with honors. After completion of High School she enrolled in Prairie View A & M College. Mrs. Sims began teaching in Plum, LaGrange and surrounding communities in the Fayette County area, after which she relocated to the Texas City - LaMarque area in 1951. She also taught at Lincoln High School and retired from LaMarque Junior High School. While at Lincoln she was instrumental in establishing and teaching the first group of young men in Home Economics. During her tenure in the LaMarque School District, Auntie, as she was commonly known, advanced in studies at Texas Southern University, University of Houston and University of Houston - Clear Lake, and later became a Vocational Home Economics Instructor.
Mrs. Sims touched many lives in her 39 years of service with the LaMarque district.
After retirement it was a new beginning.
She became active in the Lincoln-Woodland Heritage Association serving in the capacity of treasurer and simultaneously as a member of the Retired Teachers Association of LaMarque.
Mrs. Sims also supported various youth orientated programs. It was this phase of her life when she met and married
the late Rev. Dr. Ernest L. Gates in November 1993. This union flourished with devotion and love for 8 years. This was the most wonderful and happiest years of her life. She then united with Mt. Moriah Baptist Church serving faithfully in all auxiliaries with specific attention toward the Sunday School Department.
On Wednesday, July 9, 2003, Mrs.Gates heard a voice saying "Come unto me and rest" at the age of 83. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, John Lewis Sims and Rev. Dr. Ernest L. Gates; five siblings, Wilson, Semoria, Gladys, Calvin and Roy; and one grandson, Michael H. Drisdale.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Junell Sims Drisdale (Charles), of Houston; grandson and son, John Drisdale (Lanell), of Texas City; step-daughters, Ernell Gates Bonham, of Houston and Sheree Brockstein, of Humble; grandson, Darryl Drisdale, Houston; granddaughter, Karolyn Drisdale-McGowan (Derric), Houston; one sister, Mrs. Irma Jean Fonteno, of Texas City; nephews, Dr. Charles Hall (Wynona), of Nashville, Tennessee, Clarence Jackson, of East Highland, California and Retired USMC, Michael Fonteno (Susan Fonteno - Lt. Col, USMC), of Stafford, Virginia; nieces, Gwendolyn Lee, of Waco, Yvonne Roberson (Gary), of East Highland, California and Edith Phillips, of Texas City; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Williams and Mildred Hooper, of Houston; devoted care-giver, Betty Henderson-Gates and a multitude of great nieces, nephews, former students, many, many friends and the everyday support of the Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Family.
