My daddy was known to most of Texas City as the man that jumped the boat at the Dike or the General Lee on television. There was so much more than that. In fact, that was only the first five years of my life. It was the 23 years that followed that were truly inspirational. Despite losing the use of his legs in 1981, a tragedy that would have sidelined most, he continued to do things that he loved and even found a host of new things to try.
For someone who enjoys fiery crashes and rolling cars, becoming a jeweler does not seem the logical next step. However, as with many things he tried, my dad had a gift. His creative mind, entrepreneurial spirit, and deft hands turned a hobby into a passion.
Another passion, this one, I believe, must have existed since birth considering all of the hunting stories that I have heard, is that for the outdoors. Even as recently as last week, Daddy was out on the Dike fishing and begging me to go hunting with him in November.
My father truly was an inspiration to me and to others who knew him well. His spirit has always been strong and he has repeatedly refused to give up the fight. I can only imagine that as I am writing this, my daddy is running sprints or doing motorcycle jumps. We all know that he is happy in Heaven, but we will miss his mind, his creativity, and the unwavering love that he felt for his family, especially my mother and me.
Pallbearers will be Charles Lee Steinbach, Jesse Bolen, Kevin Husband, Steven Villarreal, Lester Steinbach, and Chuck Claflin.
