John W. Irving "Captain. Midnight"
HOUSTON - John Washington Irving, 68, departed this world on Monday, July 19, 2004, at Southwest Memorial Herman Hospital.
Visitation will begin today July 23, 2004, at 4 p.m. with a rosary service at 7 p.m. followed by a wake service at E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Gerald Lewis, Celebrant. Burial will follow at Lakeview cemetery.
John was born March 11,1936, in Palmetto, Louisiana to the union of Leonce and Florence Irving. He moved to Galveston, where he graduated from Central High School and married
Rose Mary Bordelon-Irving. He also attended Texas Southern University.
John begin his law enforcement career with the Galveston County Sheriff Dept.. He later joined the Galveston Police Dept. and retired in 1988. He was a member the Texas Peace Officer Association, the ILA Local 1504, the Knight of Peter Claver, Four Leaf Clover Society Club and Holy Rosary Jazz Band.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 36 years, Rose Mary and sister, Julia Theresa.
Left to cherish memories of his life are his children, John J. Irving, Sr. (Anna) of Carrolton, Texas, Diane Irving-Williams (Arthur), Karen Irving-Ford (Melvin), Glenn A. Irving (Angelina) all of Houston and Terry D. Irving (Frankie) of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren, Nicole, John, Jr., Shaun, Arthur, Jr., Kelli, Brittani, Marcus, Troy, Karel Rose, Christion, Cameron, Breana and Terri Rose; brother, Moses Leon Irving; sisters, Mary Gipson, Martha Johnson (Howard), Rita Mae Irving, Mary Ricks (James), Dr. Marilyn Irving, Deborah Ann Cooper (Ronald) and Dr. Evelyn Hunter (Charles); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
John accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. During his battle with his health he fought the good fight of faith, finished his course and can now enter into the joy of the Lord.

BRAZORIA - Funeral services for Louis Helms, Sr., 76, of Brazoria will be held Saturday, July 24, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Brazoria with the Rev. Milton Fields bringing the message of comfort and the Rev. Lewis Roberson officiating. Burial will follow at Jerusalem cemetery.
He died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Cypress Woods Care Center in Angleton.
Survivors include three sons, Corwon Davis (Camilla) of Brazoria, Armond Davis (Maria) of West Columbia and Benjamin Brown of Cedar Lake; three daughters, Brenetta Tolbert (Arthur) of Cedar Lake, Barbara Hattier of Texas City and Clara Johnson (John H.) of Brazoria; two brothers, Ervin Helms (Julia) of Brazoria and Alonzo Helms, Jr. (Vonnie) of Galveston; 18 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; extended family members, godson Michael Helms (Debbie) of Houston; brother in law Joseph Moore, Sr. (Alice) of Brazoria; sister-in-law Eliza Smith and Jessie Helms both of Brazoria; 6 aunts, Cora Goodwin (Charlie) and Nettie Helm both of Brazoria, Ora Lee Jammer and Ola Mack both of Sweeny, Frankie Jackson of San Francisco, California, Francis Jammer of Houston and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, July 23, 2004 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria. Viewing will be Saturday, July 24, 2004, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. There will be no viewing afterwards.

GALVESTON - Mrs. Mae Frances Leon, 76, of Galveston passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Mainland Center Hospital in Texas City. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 23, 2004, at 4 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. A. S. Johnson officiating. Mrs. Leon was a member of the Pastor Aid and the Women's Mission.

HOUSTON - Ray "Taz" Anthony Levine passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2004. A wake will be held Friday, July 23, 2004 from 7-9 p.m. at McCoy and Harrison Funeral Home, Inc., 4918 Martin Luther King Blvd., in Houston. Homecoming services will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church at 2201 Tuam Avenue, Houston.
Ray was born August 29, 1962, in Galveston. He was an entrepreneur in the health care industry. He graduated from Ball High in Galveston and continued his education at Lamar University. He also graduated from Texas Southern University where he received many accolades, including the National Deans List and receiving a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
His father, John Scott; adopted parents Carlorton and Hattie Levine preceded him in death.
He is survived by his mother Bernadine Charles Hare; sister Michelle Charles and Theresa Jefferson; brothers Benny Levine, Lina Levine, Jerry Ned, and Charlie Levine; children Raychele Gaines, Kendrick Guillory, Mieka Levine, Travon Levine, Zakia Levine, Gabrielle Levine, Davonte Levine; aunt Willie Mae Malonson; devoted friend Sstephine Watt and a host of other family, friends and fraternity brothers.

LA MARQUE - Mr. Andrew P. Winters, Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, July 18, 2004, at his home.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Mainland Funeral Home Chapel in La Marque followed by a wake from 7 p.m. to 8p.m. Funeral services will be 11a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Galilee Baptist Church, 6609 Fairwood Road in Hitchcock. Rev. B. J. Hunter will officiate. Burial will follow services at Grace Memorial Park cemetery in Hitchcock.
Mr. Winters was born January 11, 1917, in Washington, Texas to the Nelson Winters, Sr. and Gertrude Yarbough Winters. He worked on Galveston Wharves as a Foreman in many gangs until his retirement; and was a faithful member of ILA #851. A former resident of Galveston, he was a member of Live Oak Baptist Church. After relocating to La Marque from Washington, Texas, he united with Galilee Baptist Church and served faithfully until his health failed. His signature was his friendliness to all he met.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Annie Lee Roberson Winters; son, Andrew P. Winters Jr.; sisters and brothers, Cordelia Sneed, Virginia Sanders, Elvelia King, Nelson Winters, Jr. and Johnnie Winters.
Andrew's quietness and love will linger forever in the hearts of his daughter, Patricia Winters of La Marque; his sister, Willie Lee Lundy of Tampa, Florida; brother, Palmer Winters of Washington, Texas; sister-in-law, Robbie Winters of Temple, Texas; goddaughter, Doris Milburn (Clary) of Hitchcock; devoted nieces, Charlotte Mays (Levi) of Houston and Virginia Norman (Olan) of La Marque; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.

GALVESTON - Catherine McCalister Taylor, 83, died on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at UTMB.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2004, at Wynn Funeral Home, 602-32nd Street, Galveston, Texas, followed by a wake from 7 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Shiloh A.M.E. Church, 1310 29th Street, Galveston, Texas, with the Rev. W. L. Brown, officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park cemetery, Hitchcock, Texas.
Catherine was born on April 25, 1921, in Oakwood, Texas (Leon County) to the union of Early and Allie Bell McCalister. She began her formal education at the age of four and attended Magnolia Elementary School in Oakwood from the first to eighth grade. After being promoted to the ninth grade, Catherine enrolled in St. Paul High School in Oakwood. After graduating from high school, Catherine followed in her father's footsteps and matriculated at his alma mater, Texas College in Tyler, Texas where she majored in economics and minored in sociology. She truly enjoyed her college years and after receiving her degree, she received a job offer to teach elementary school in Sea Grave, Texas near New Mexico. After teaching for a year, she decided to join her sister, Myrtle and cousin Charlie T. in Galveston.
After being single for several years, Catherine met a handsome gentleman, Leon Taylor, and they married
. Leon was a widower with four adult children: Leon Jr., Robert, Ruth and Mary Kathryn. On July 24, 1959, a precious baby boy, Walter Earl Taylor, was born to the happy couple. After nine wonderful years of marriage, Catherine's husband was hit by an automobile. Unfortunately, he died within two weeks after the tragic accident.
Catherine and her son, Walter Earl, worshiped faithfully at Shiloh A.M.E. Church after the death of her beloved husband. She is the last and youngest member of the Early McCalister Family. She was preceded in death by her parents; 7 siblings and is survived by her son, Walter Earl Taylor; Robert Taylor and Ruth Evans; nieces Opal McCoy (Harold) of SuiSun City, California, Hazel Henderson (Leon) of Galveston, Barbara Thomas (Harold) of San Francisco, California; nephews Spergon Wynn, Jr., (Dorethea) of Galveston and Charles Edward Wynn (Margaret) of Chesapeake, Virginia; devoted cousin, Charlie T.; loving godchild, Gina Stubbefield; and many great nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends Pauline Stephens, B. Clark, Mrs. Anderson, Dorothy Cartwright, Elnora "Honey" Mays, Gertha Hall, Leona Jones and Della Moore.
