Earl Harvey "Doc" Baker

ALVIN - Earl Harvey "Doc" Baker, 88, of Alvin, Texas, peacefully passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at his residence. Doc was born on January 18, 1916, in Memphis, Tennessee to Edgar Roy and Kathrine Elizabeth Baker. He was a resident of Alvin since 1945, formerly of Galveston, Texas. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1945. He was a member VFW Post 5237 and was a former Mayor of Alvin, Texas. Mr. Baker is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Roy, Paul, and Mickey Baker.

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years Mildred Baker of Alvin, Texas; one daughter Bonnie (John Lee) Kent, Jr. of Houston, Texas; two sisters Katherine Dalton of Memphis, Tennessee, Doris Jean Malone of League City, Texas; two brothers Donald Baker of Chireno, Texas, George Baker of Norfolk, Virginia; two granddaughters Lisa ( Tim ) Tritico of Bellville, Texas, Laura McGuire of Houston, Texas and six great grandchildren Madison, Hudson, and Grace Tritico of Bellville, Texas, Emma, Ian, and Samuel McGuire of Houston, Texas.

His family would like to thank Brenda and Larry Townsend, Nancy and Donnie Long and their family, along with a host of special neighbors for their efforts and support. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to: The Alvin Food Pantry, 1212 South Durant, Alvin, Texas 77511, (281) 824-8871.

Marvin Reece Jefferson

GALVESTON - Marvin Reece Jefferson, 58, of Galveston, Texas, went to be with the Lord Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Houston Hospice Care, in Houston, Texas. Visitation will be held from 4 -7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, followed by a wake service from 7 - 8 p.m. at Wynn Funeral Home, 602-32nd Street, Galveston, Texas.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Wynn Funeral Home, with the Reverend David L. Everson, Sr., officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview cemetery, Galveston, Texas.

On April 11, 1946, Marvin was born to Natalie McCray and Joseph Pondexter in El Campo, Texas. He was raised in the Houston Area where he attended school. Marvin worked in the transportation field as a nation-wide truck driver. He also worked for Galveston Independent School District as a Building Engineer.

Marvin retired from First Wave Shipyard as a Pipe fitter, Welder and Leadman, prior to his failing health. Marvin enjoyed fishing, and life with his wife, Yvette Jefferson. He had a wonderful sense of humor, loved joking with his brother-in-law, family and friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his mother and father. He leaves to mourn his very devoted, loving wife, Yvette Jefferson, who was by his side during his long term illness; devoted mother-in-law, Mrs. Elnora Herron of Galveston, Texas; two devoted step sons, who he raised as his own Andre' Sanders (Rhonda) and Adrian Stewart (Sheneice) of Galveston, Texas; two sons and daughters Marvin Jr., Nivram, MeMe and Kia Jefferson; sister-in-law, Elena Bradford (Michael) of Texas City and Pamela Fisher of Dallas, Texas, Laverne Johnson (Robert) of St. Louis, Missouri; brother-on-laws: Edward Herron and Emanuel (Elona) of Galveston, Texas; special friends Shirley Grice of Galveston and Karen Sanford of Houston; host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Special thanks to MD Anderson Hospital, G10 Unit, Staff and Houston Hospice Care Staff.

Roxie Caroline Sullivan

SANTA FE - Roxie Caroline Sullivan, 64, passed away at her residence in Santa Fe on Sunday, July 18, 2004. She was born August 31, 1939, in Charleston, West Virginia to William and Gladys Bonham. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas with Reverend Tom Medlin officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 20, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, John; three daughters, Cindy Sullivan; Karen "Dee Dee" Lowe and James; Stephanie Lea David and Chris; two sons, Dale Sullivan and Janet; Stephen Sullivan and finance’ Kristel; sister, Betty Bell; brother, James Walker and nine grandchildren, Samantha Sullivan, Jarrett Sullivan, Matthew Sullivan, Anna Lowe, John Lowe, Curtis David, Andy David, Brandon Creel, Kaleb Ronning and another grandbaby on the way.

William Dempsey Seybold

DALLAS, TEXAS - William Dempsey Seybold, 89, retired physician, died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at his home.

He was born February 23, 1915, in Temple, Texas to Claude Dempsey and Lillian Cochrane Seybold. After graduating from Temple High School, he attended the University of Texas receiving a BS in Medicine in 1936. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1938.

Dr. Seybold was Instructor of Anatomy at UTMB from 1938-40; served his internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri from 1940-42; Fellowship in Surgery at Mayo Foundation Rochester 1941-44 and 1946-47; Lt. Jg. In the Medical Corps of the U. S. Naval Reserve 1944-46; received a MS in Surgery from the University of Minnesota, Mayo Foundation Rochester in 1947; served on the Mayo Clinic surgical staff in Rochester from 1947-50; was an Instructor in Surgery at the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota, Mayo Foundation, from 1947-50.

He returned to Texas in 1950 to become a partner at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston where he was Chief of Surgery from 1961-79 and Chief of Staff from 1972-75. He also served as Chief of Surgery from 1956-79 at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston as well as Chief of Staff from 1967-70.

Other teaching appointments included Clinical Surgery at UT Postgraduate School of Medicine and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He specialized in General and Thoracic Surgery.

Boards and memberships included the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, American Association of Thoracic Surgery, Board of Thoracic Surgery and member of its Founder's Group, American Board of Surgery, American Medical Association, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Sigma Xi, Chairman of the Section on Surgery of the Texas Medical Association, President of the Texas Surgical Society in 1971, Program Committee Chairman of the Western Surgical Association, Vice President of the Houston Surgical Society, Chaired the Committee on Nursing for the TMA as well as a member of its Patient Services Committee, Chairman of the Library Committee of the Texas Medical Center, President of the Texas Division of the American Cancer Society in 1964, served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the national Multiple Sclerosis Society, member of the Board of Directors of Republic Bank Houston, Doctors Mayo Society and a Trustee of the Southwestern Medical Foundation. He served as President of the Philosophical Society of Texas in 1992.

Dr. Seybold was an Associate Member of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the Dallas County Club, a former member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston serving on the Vestry, and a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas for 23 years.

At the University of Texas, Dr. Seybold was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, received the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1979 from UTMB in Galveston, served on the Committee of 75 Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence in Education at UT (1957-58), the Centennial Commission Celebrating 100 Years for UT Austin (1981-83) and the Committee of 125 Celebrating 125 Years of Excellence in Education at UT (2003). He was a member of the Chancellor's Council at UT Austin as well as the Development Board at UTMB Galveston.

Dr. Seybold collaborated in publishing two books and wrote 65 articles and editorials.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Frances Randolph Rather Seybold; and their daughter Frances Rather Seybold.

Dr. Seybold is survived by his wife, Adele Neely Locke Seybold; his brother, Dr. Herbert M. Seybold; his sons, Dr. William R. Seybold and his wife Ann, Dr. Randolph C. Seybold, John P. Locke and his wife Ramona, and Thomas N. Locke and his wife Kathy. He is also survived by a daughter, Aimee Locke Jacobie; as well as 9 grandchildren, William Stephens Seybold, Philip Randolph Seybold, Virginia Frances Seybold, Jack Seybold, Benjamin Christopher Locke, David Neely Locke, Perry Marie Locke, Jennifer Jacobie Ewing and Laura Nell Jacobie. Three great grandchildren also survive Dr. Seybold.

Dr. W. J. A. Power will officiate at a memorial service at the chapel of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 8011 Douglas Avenue, Dallas, On Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at 2 p.m. Dr. Seybold willed his body to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Friends of the family will be greeted in the church parlor following the service.

FRIENDSWOOD - Wilma Lorriane Bailey, 76, of Friendswood, Texas passed away July 18, 2004. She was a member of Glad Tiding Assembly of God Church.

Wilma was preceded in death by her brothers, J.W. Holmes and John Holmes.

Wilma is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Mignon Bailey; son, Charles Keith Bailey; sisters, Helen Gace and husband, Gaza, Doris Zonana, Ellen Brecca, Nita Ellison and husband, Doyle, Betty Kershaw, and Dorothy Schinzler; and brothers, Harold Holmes and wife, Juanita and Ray O. Holmes and wife, Gladys.

The memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Friendswood, Texas with Reverend Dueward Wimberly officiating.

Sharon Denise Jones, 38, of Galveston, Texas, passed from this life on Friday, July 16, 2004.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, followed by a wake from 7 to 8 p.m. at Wynn Funeral Home, 602-32nd Street, Galveston, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at West Point Baptist Church, Galveston, Texas, with the Reverend K. Tillmon, officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview cemetery, Galveston, Texas.

On July 4, 1966, Sharon was born to Maxine Jones and Robert Goins in Galveston, Texas. She was raised in Galveston and attended GISD. She was employed and worked in the food industry. Sharon became a member of West Point Baptist Church and participated as a member in the Music Ministry. She enjoyed watching soap operas, sports, and game shows. Sharon was a very kind and loving person, eager to help anyone anyway she could.

Sharon is preceded in death by her mother and father, adopted mother, Mary "Mae" Woods; grandmother, Mrs. Lennie L. Hicks, and aunt and uncle. She leaves her precious memories to husband, Randolph Moore of Galveston; brother, Tony Franklin (Paula) of Galveston; adopted brother, John Kelly of Dallas; niece, Sheila Franklin; nephew, Tony Franklin, Jr.; great nephew, Akylius Spurlock; great niece, Colbrian Flomas all of Galveston; goddaughters: Jessica Suprlock and Larkeisha Bonner of Galveston; aunts: Dona Lane Mary Wiltz; uncles: Calvin and Donald Jones all of Galveston and Noah Gene Jones of Houston; devoted cousin, Ada Jones of Galveston and Lonnetta Walker of Amarillo; extended family: Loletha Thompson and Demetria Bonner.
