Frank Theodore Keats, III

GALVESTON – Frank Theodore Keats, III, 45, departed this life on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at UTMB Hospital.

Visitation will be held today May 28, 2004, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at E R Johnson Family Mortuary. A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Gtr. Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Dorise, officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Lakeview cemetery.

Frank was born September 14, 1958, in Galveston to Frank, Jr. and Dorothy Marshall Keats. He attended Galveston public schools and was a 1978 graduate of Ball High School. He was employed as a restaurant cook.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Ronald Keats.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle Keats; son, Frank T. Keats, IV; mother, Dorothy Keats; sisters, Debra Elders all of Galveston and Kasetta Keats of Houston; foster father, John Rose; five uncles, five aunts, five great aunts; host of other relative and friends.

Guadalupe Maynes Armendáriz

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Guadalupe Maynes Armendáriz was called to our Lord Wednesday, May 26, 2004. He was a loving and caring father, as well as a faithful Presbyterian Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Rev. Armendáriz was born December 18, 1904, in San Carlos, Chihuahua, Mexico. Together with his parents and siblings, he emigrated to the United States of America in 1913. He attended Lydia Patterson Institute in El Paso and graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (APTS) in Austin. Rev. Armendáriz was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in 1931 at The Mexican Presbyterian Church (Memorial) in San Marcos, Texas. He served pastorates in Galveston, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Dallas and San Benito, Texas; San Bernardino and Coachella, California and Phoenix and Flagstaff, Arizona. These churches represented four Presbyterian denominations that included The Presbyterian Church US, The United Presbyterian Church, The National Presbyterian Church of Mexico and The Presbyterian Church (USA), from which he was Honorably Retired.

Rev Armendáriz’ ministry was recognized by receiving the Distinguished Alumnus Award from APTS in 1986. In addition to his devotion to his ministry, Rev. Armendáriz had a passion for music that he enthusiastically shared with his family and in his retirement years devoted time to making and playing violins.

Rev. Armendáriz was preceded in death by his loving wife and partner in ministry, Hermelinda Pacillas Armendáriz; his parents Serapio and Encarnación Armendáriz and ten siblings.

He is survived by his brother Rev. Rubén M. Armendáriz of Houston, Texas and his eight children: Hermelinda Hernandez of Houston, Texas; Rubén P. Armendáriz and his wife Dr. Cynthia Díaz de León of San Antonio, Texas; Josué P. Armendáriz and his wife Mary Ann of Hitchcock, Texas; Bernice Cole of Indianapolis, Indiana; Helen Zapata and her husband Daniel of Scottsdale, Arizona; Benjamin P. Armendáriz and his wife Helen of Austin, Texas; Dr. Efraim P. Armendáriz and his wife Edna of Austin, Texas; and Dina Armendáriz of Fraizer Park, California. He is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren and long time family friends Jesus and Celia Plata and their family of San Benito, Texas.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 o’clock to 9 o’clock at Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio, Texas. Witness to the Resurrection Service will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 211 Rodeto Dr. in San Antonio, with the Rev. Dr. Cecil L. Lang, Jr. officiating. Graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Galveston Memorial Park cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas with the Rev. Rubén P. Armendáriz officiating.

Pallbearers are Alfred Hernandez, Richard Hernandez, Joel Armendáriz, Julian Armendáriz, Joshua Armendáriz, Daniel Zapata, Michael Cole, Matthew Armendáriz, Paul Armendáriz and Greg Rader.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Guadalupe M. Armendáriz Scholarship Fund at APTS, 100 East 27th Street, Austin, TX 78705.

Joseph Doyle Morris

CHAPPELL HILL, TEXAS - Joseph Doyle Morris, 80, of Chappell Hill, Texas, died May 25, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Morris was born April 23, 1924, in Elk City, Oklahoma to William Randolph and Hattie Gazelle Morris. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his son, Chris Morris and wife Anais Nelson of Austin; daughter, Debra Morris and husband Geoffrey Birkholz of Galveston; grandson, Clayton Morris of Georgetown; granddaughter, Rebecca Birkholz of Galveston; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith and Jack Woodard of Arlington, Conova and Gene Thomas of Midland and Frieda Gross of Phoenix, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, at 3630 W. Hilltop Dr. in Chappell Hill, Texas. The family will receive visitors at the family residence beginning at noon on Friday.

Juanita Nieves Gonzales

GALVESTON - Juanita Nieves Gonzales, 87, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at her home in Galveston, surrounded by her loving family. A chapel service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 29, 2004, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home, Galveston, with Fr. Gerald Lewis, S.V.D., officiating. Burial will follow services Saturday at Calvary cemetery also in Galveston. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2004, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home. Mrs. Gonzales’ family will be receiving friends for visitation at the funeral home Friday evening after 5 p.m.

Mrs. Gonzales was born in Gonzales, Texas, March 9, 1917. Living on Galveston Island, she was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening and growing beautiful flowers and even when her health failed her, she would try to enjoy her nature’s beauty.

Mrs. Gonzales is preceded in death by her husband, Macedonio "Max" Gonzales and her parents, Maria and Ysidoro Nieves. She leaves behind many wonderful memories with her loving children, Virginia Solis and husband, Joe, Ernest Gonzales, and Vicky Martinez, all of Galveston and Rebecca Servantes of Texas City; her grandchildren, Veronica Maisey of Galveston, John Servantes, Michele Servantes, Debra Servantes, all of Texas City, Albert Martinez, Christopher Martinez and Victor Gonzales, all of Galveston; great-grandchildren, Timmy Maisey, Daniel Maisey, Alyssa Maisey, Brenna Servantes and Angelica Gonzales. Sharing in her loss, too, are Mrs. Gonzales’ sisters, Carmen Chavez of Galveston and Lupe Cheevers of California; brothers, Lawrence Nieves of Galveston and Luz Nieves of Houston, Texas; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews, a host of other loving family and friends, most especially, Aurora Vasquez.

Pallbearers will be John Servantes, Albert Martinez, Christopher Martinez, Victor Gonzales, Mario Cook and Joe Garza.

Oscar Underwood Murray

BACLIFF - Oscar Underwood Murray, 89, of Bacliff, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in Webster, Texas. He was born on September 17, 1914, in Greenwood, Texas to Virgil Curtis and Mary Ellen Murray. He was a prize fighter in the United States Army and also a survivor of the Texas City Explosion in 1947.

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Opal Thompson, Blanch Nettles and Cleo Perry; and his beloved wife Lillie Marie Murray.

He is survived by his four daughters, Gwen Fugman of League City, Lois Ellen Jones of Friendswood, Helen Louise Kelly of League City, and Mary Evelyn Linkey and her husband Joe of Dickinson; his four sons, Richard Phillips Murray and his wife Jimmie Sue of Sulphur Springs, Albert Curtis Murray and his wife Carolyn of Dickinson, Garland Seaon Murray and his wife Valerie of League City, and William Underwood Murray and his wife Dolores of Bacliff; his sister: Golden Heer of Galveston; his brother: William G. Murray of Bacliff; 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers include his grandsons, Bill Murray, Brent Jones, Tony Kelly Jr., Chad Malm, Rusty Malm, Garland Murray, Jr., Justin Murray, and Michael Murray. Honorary pallbearers include Rick Phillips and Brandon Sladecek.

A visitation service will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2004, at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas. Interment will be at Mount Olivet cemetery in Dickinson, Texas.

Palmer McClurkin Jr.

LA MARQUE - Palmer McClurkin Jr. of LaMarque, Texas, was born on January 15, 1918, to Palmer McClurkin Sr. and Maude LaMotte McClurkin both deceased. His other 2 siblings are Norma Anderson and Nathan McClurkin now deceased.

From the late 1930’s until he was drafted into WWII in 1943, he played with the Negro Baseball League. He was a decorated soldier in the Army during WWII and served in both the Western and Asian Pacific. He was honorably discharged on November 20, 1945.

Palmer McClurkin Jr. was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on March 30, 1947, and was a faithful and active witness for 57 years until his death on May 22, 2004.

He is survived by two children from a previous marriage: Judy Ann Lewis of Houston, Texas, and Jerome McClurkin of San Francisco, California.

He was married for 51 years to Carrie McClurkin now deceased. Together they had 6 children: Caroline Parkey, Paul McClurkin (deceased), Timothy McClurkin Sr., Penita Jones, Charlotte Blackwell-Benjamin, and Catriona Brown. He also had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

His memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 2 PM. The address is 7551 Monticello Drive, West Texas City, Texas.
