Ruben Mendoza, Sr.
GALVESTON - Ruben Mendoza, Sr., 44, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2004 at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. A Chapel Service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home also in Galveston. Mr. Mendoza’s family will be receiving friends for visitation at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 5 p.m. until 9p.m.
Ruben was born July 16, 1959, in Brownsville, Texas. He served proudly in the United States Army until such time that he was honorably discharged. He was a professional mechanic, by trade, for the past 20 years and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He truly loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening and listening to music.
Ruben was preceded in death by his father, Florencio Mendoza, Sr. and is survived by his two sons, Ruben Mendoza, Jr. and Anthony Robert Mendoza. Sharing in his loss, also, is Ruben’s mother, Amelia Mendoza and his brothers and sisters, Florencio Mendoza, Jr. and wife, Dora, George Mendoza, Viola Mendoza-Elias and husband, Lee, Roy Mendoza and Elizabeth Mendoza-Elias and husband, Miguel. Saddened, too, by his passing are Ruben’s nieces and nephews, Steven Scott Mendoza, Anna Mendoza, Angelita Mendoza, Amy Lee Mendoza, Florencio Mendoza, III, Eduardo Reyes, Monica Sanchez, Marissa Elias and Matthew Elias, cousins, Leticia Romero Hernandez, Angel Romero, aunts and uncles, Raymundo and Alicia Limas and Pablo and Maria Romero, former wife, Chely Mendoza, a host of other relatives and many friends. He will be sadly missed.
Cremation services for Mr. Mendoza will follow and are being handled under the direction of Broadway Funeral Home.

BURTON, TEXAS - Mrs. Lorna Somers Merten, 76, of Burton, TX , died Saturday, May 22, 2004, in a Brenham hospital.
She is survived by her husband Chester C. Merten; sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Judy Merten of Bastrop, William C. and Carole Merten of Austin; daughters and son-in-law, Evelyn Shead, Sandy Merten, and Mary Beth and John Jewell, all of Austin; brother, Jack Somers of Houston; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Lorna Somers Merten will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 24, 2004, in St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton with Reverend Glen Schoeneberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - In Galveston, Texas on February 18, 1950, a son was born to the union Raymond and Claudia Armstrong Hamilton. My name is Douglas Wayne Hamilton. My family fondly knew me as Doug,
I was baptized at an early age at McKinney Memorial United Methodist Church in La Marque. Educated in the public schools of La Marque, Texas, I attended Lincoln High School through my Jr. Year. While on vacation to visit my family in California, I chose to finish my Sr. year in San Francisco; and also attended college there. I was a longtime employee of the Yellow Cab Company.
Preceding me in death are my father, Raymond Hamilton and grandparents, Jacob E. Armstrong Sr., Mariah and Cain Hamilton Sr.
Left to cherish my memories are my loving mother, Claudia Hamilton of La Marque; my pride and joy, my sisters, Rev. Patricia Wells of Houston, Nettie Raye King and Althea Faye (Morris Ray) Callis both of La Marque; my grandmother, Mrs. Maggie E. Armstron of La Marque; my niece and nephew, Major G. (Keshela) Jones and Voncil Adkins; great-nieces and nephews, Arick and Christopher Jones, Crystal Truitt, Darius Adkins and Tyra Goff; uncles, Jacob E. GALVESTON - Leo Camacho Pena, 76, died May 22, 2004, at Gulf Health Care Center in Galveston, Texas. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 14th and Broadway, Galveston, Texas with Father Frank Fabj, officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston, Texas with a rosary to be held at 6:30 p.m.
Leo was born June 29, 1927, to Melcho and Mary Camacho Pena in Rosenberg, Texas. He came to Galveston at the age of 14 to visit relatives. He liked what he saw and stayed. Here he met and married
the love of his life, Bertha Aguilar in 1944, and started raising his family. He moved to San Antonio, Texas long enough to attend barber’s school. After finishing his training he returned to Galveston and had worked in his chosen field ever since, owning two barbershops. He was a dedicated member of LULAC Council 151 for 50 years, having served as President for one year and Treasurer for three years. In 1993, he received a plaque installing him into the LULAC Heritage Hall of Fame along with a Proclamation from Mayor Barbara Crews designating October 10, 1993, LULAC Hispanic Heritage Hall of Fame Day in his honor.
preceded in death by his parents, his son, Gilbert Pena and brother, Pedro Pena, Leo is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bertha Pena of Galveston; sons, Roland Pena and Robert Pena, both of Galveston; beloved daughter-in-law, Dolores Pena of Galveston; granddaughters, "Tori" Pena and Brandie Nicole Pena both of Houston and Rachel Pena of Galveston; brothers, Jesse Camacho and wife, Mary, Tom Pena and Lupe Pena all of Sugarland, Concho Pena and wife, Mary of Houston and John Pena of Sugarland; sister, Dolores Estrada of Ft. Worth; stepmother, Coca Pena of Sugarland; numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

Mary Thomson Doby
COLLEGE STATION - Mary Thomson Doby, 77, passed away in College Station after a long illness with Parkinson's Disease. She was born December 12, 1926, in Ponca City Oklahoma.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Joe and three sons, George of Cleburne, Texas Carl of Houston, Texas and Jim and wife Brenda of Tomball, Texas. She is also survived by two grandsons, Joe Doby of Bacliff, Texas, Justin Doby of Port Aransas, Texas and a granddaughter, Tabitha in Galveston, Texas. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Thomson of Billings, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thomson; one sister, Virginia; and two brothers, Mark and Bob. She is survived by numerous nephews and nieces. She was a dear friend to many.
She was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota. Also, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in the William Penn Extension Education Club. In addition, she was active in the Herb Society.
She graduated from Tonkawa High, Tonkawa, Oklahoma Junior College and went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater. She also earned a Master's degree from Texas Southern University in Houston.
She was a teacher in Junior High School Home Economics in Dickinson, Texas for 18 years.
Private graveside services will be held at Houston National cemetery in Houston. A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Navasota.

Peggy Alane Ashworth Wansbrough
DICKINSON - Peggy Alane Ashworth Wansbrough, of Dickinson, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2004, at Mainland Hospital in Texas City, Texas. She was born February 23, 1934 in Singer, Louisiana to Barney and Mary Ashworth. Peggy was a retired secretary for Monsanto-Carbide.
She was preceded in death by her father Barney Ashworth and her sister Bertie Faye Ashworth.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Ashworth; her daughter, Denise Spain; her son, Dennis Owens; her brother: Alan Ashworth and his wife Mary; her two grandchildren: Amanda Spain and Brianna Owens; her daughter in spirit Sue Ann Elliott and various nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Dickinson, Texas.
She lived her life to the fullest. She lived a long and amazing life. She was never afraid to risk and always spoke her mind. She loved Gator football, The Magnificent 7 Bridge Group, and time with her family and friends. This world was truly blessed to have such a strong and powerful woman in it. She will be missed forever.

Willie "Joe" Smith
GALVESTON - Willie "Joe" Smith, 70, passed from this life Friday afternoon at his home. He was born November 14, 1933, in Finger, Tennessee. Joe, formerly of Dayton has been a resident of Galveston for 6 years. He was previously employed by Mims Meat Market and Dairy Queen.
Joe will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 20 years, Audrey; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Jackie Smith of Spring; son and daughter-in-law Ricky and Deborah Bradley of Humble; and daughter and son-in-law Michelle and James McElhaney of Dayton. He is survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Joe is also survived by two other sons Willie Jr. and Jerry. He leaves behind his four-legged family members- cats: Campi and Lucky and dog: Elvis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Troy and Sindy Aberdeen, his brother James Troy Smith and his sister Hazel Conners, all of Finger, Tennessee.
Services for Joe will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday May 25, 2004, at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. Visitation will be 6 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on Monday evening at the Funeral Home.
