Mr. Simpson was born May 25, 1916, in Shepherd, Texas, to Oscar P. Simpson and Sue Ola Smith. He was the loving and proud father of four daughters, Shirley, Marian, Marilyn & Kathy. He was the last surviving charter member of First Baptist Church, Dickinson, Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving and caring wife Odell Simpson, his parents, twin brother Burl, brother Oscar and sister Genevieve. Survivors include: daughters, Shirley Hearne and husband Jack of Caldwell, Texas, Marian Pearce and husband Paul of Conroe, Texas, Marilyn Connor and husband Glenn of Normangee, Texas, and Kathy Pruitt and husband John of Meridian, Texas. Grandchildren: Laree and Chuck Giarrizzo, Mark Venable, Kerri and Billy Lauderdale, Lisa and Chuck Lewis, Amy and Keith Hahn, Karla and Ricky Medeiros, William and Christa Connor, Clay Pruitt and Megan Pruitt. Great Grandchildren: Zac and Katy Lauderdale, Julianna Lewis, Brandon, Nicholas and Ashlyn Hahn, Logan and Cameron Medeiros. Brothers, Wallace Simpson of Hitchcock, Texas, Leslie Simpson of Shepherd, Texas, Bill Simpson of Lufkin, Texas. Sisters, Minnie Kylberg of New Caney, Texas, Geraldine Waite of League City, Texas. Services will be held on Monday, May 17, 2004, at Forest Park East Funeral Home, with visitation at 11 a.m., and funeral services at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Park East cemetery.

CRYSTAL BEACH - John "Jack" Conway, 58, of Crystal Beach died June 1, 2004, at Bayside Community Hospital.

James M. Jefferson
PHOENIX, ARIZONA - Mr. James M. Jefferson "Rooster" was born to Mr. Jenkins M. Jefferson, Sr. and Mrs. Dorothy Bell Jefferson, September 11, 1946, in Galveston, Texas.
He preceded in death by his father and mother, sister Iona Jefferson-Daniels. He died on May 25, 2004, in Phoenix, Arizona.
He attended Lincoln High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy for 4 years. He was a long time resident of California. He was Vice President of the Sin City Disciples Motorcycle Club in California.
Mr. Jefferson is survived by his twin brother, Jenkins M. Jefferson, Jr. wife Daphaney; brother, Joseph Johnson, Sr., Jerome Jefferson, all of La Marque; one sister and brother in law, Mr. and Mrs. Roylin Bradley, Sr., of La Marque, Texas; devoted aunt Mrs. Pearl Dorsey of La Marque.
Left to cherish his precious memories are his children Valerie J., Marlon M., Dorothy L. Jefferson of Houston, Texas, Yolanda Fisher of Texas City, James Clay of Bay City; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

TEXAS CITY - Joe J. Luna Sr. passed away on June 2, 2004, at his residence in Texas City. Mr. Luna’s family will be receiving friends for visitation on Sunday, June 6, 2004, at 5 p.m. at the Forest Park East Funeral Home Chapel with funeral services on Monday, June 10, 2004, at 10 a.m.
Mr. Luna was born on August 3, 1925, in Sugarland, Texas. He was retired from the Painter’s Local Union No. 585. He lived in Texas City for 67 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Sarasota, APA204 and earned medals for the American Area Campaign, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign with two Stars, WWII Victory, and Philippine Liberation. He also attended the Navy Artist School and was asked to draw pictures during the war. He was a survivor of the Texas City disaster of 1947, when he was working on the docks near the explosion. He enjoyed music and played several musical instruments.
He was proceeded in death by his parents Lucio and Delfina Luna of Texas City and his sons Daniel Luna and Baby James Luna; brothers, Arthur Luna Sr. and Edward (Lalo) Garcia; sister, Francis Cardona.
He is survived by his wife Eula G. Luna; sons, David R. (Sylvia) Luna, Joe J. Rev. James LeRoy O’Connor
BACLIFF - Rev. James LeRoy O’Connor was born in Singer, Louisiana, November 27, 1920, and went to be with the Lord on June 4, 2004. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army. While stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was licensed to preach the gospel as a Southern Baptist Minister. He began his ministry in Louisiana and served several churches there for many years before moving to Bacliff, Texas in 1962. He served as pastor of First Baptist Church of Bacliff for twenty years before retiring.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mildred; and a daughter, Karen Ingalls and husband, Gene of Amarillo, a son, Russell O’Connor and wife Janet of Galveston, a daughter, Billie Toups and husband, Jim of League City. He also leaves 9 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the Jack Rowe F.H., from 6-8 p.m., Saturday with funeral services to be held at Jack Rowe Funeral Home in League City at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 6, 2004, with Rev. Charley Day officiating.
Pallbearers will be James Toups, Jr., William Toups, Ricki Ingalls, Derek Jordan, Don Hicks and Clinton Heard.

Gordan S. (Cowboy) Rutt, Jr.
DICKINSON - Long time resident of Dickinson, Texas, Gordan S. (Cowboy) Rutt, Jr., 66, passed away on June 3, 2004. Gordan was born in Beaumont, Texas on November 25, 1937. to Lucile and Gordan Rutt, Sr. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and attended Lamar University. He graduated with a nursing degree from Alvin Community College, retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Gordan’s varied careers included work at NASA during the height of the space program and travels to Saudi Arabia. As an entrepreneur he started many businesses with his brother, Gene, including the Lone Star bar in Cancun, Mexico and most recently a Gulf Coast publication entitled, Tropicalattitude.
Gordan is survived by his wife of 26 years, Marsha Rutt; his brother, Gene Rutt; and his two daughters Robin Laskowski and Ginger Chandler.
Gordan was a colorful personality and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 3 p.m. in the Crowder Funeral Home Chapel, Dickinson, Texas.

Reuben W. Barrow, Jr.
SANTA FE - Reuben W. Barrow, Jr., 77, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2004, in Santa Fe, Texas. He was born September 11, 1926, in Beaumont, Texas to Reuben and Ethel Willard.
Mr. Barrow served in the U.S. Army during WWII and is a member of the VFW. He was a retired pipe fitter and was involved in ranching as well.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Barrow of High Island; sister, Millie Eddy of Beaumont; sons, Reuben Hal Barrow and wife, Tina of Santa Fe and John Keith Stanley of High Island. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Taylor LeAnn Barrow, Justin R. Barrow, Hollie Cunningham, Brain Stanley, Caleb J. Stanley and Tye Stanley.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 3 p.m. in the St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in High Island, Texas. Visitation will begin at noon until service time at the church. Interment will follow services at High Island cemetery.

BRYAN, TEXAS - Julia Jan Moore Matlock, 68, passed away June 1, 2004, in Bryan, Texas. Jan was born January 31, 1936, in Galveston, Texas. She was a resident of Texas City for many years working in the medical field, and an active participant in many civic organizations. She spent the remainder of her years enjoying the piney woods of Huntsville, Texas where she touched the lives of many in the area.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Khleber Moore, Jr. and Alvina Cecile Gremillion. Left to cherish memories are her children, Julia Jane Barroso, Eddie Barroso and wife Kathy; grandchildren, Julia Janina Barroso and Juan-Miguel Barroso; devoted and loving sister, Drucilla Powell. Brothers, Thomas Moore III and wife Patty, and Kenneth Moore; stepmother, Doris Moore, Uncle James Moore and wife Lefa; Aunt Julia Moore Roach, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Special recognition to loving cousin and friend, Marge Stockton, and sincere appreciation to Terry and Wendy Matlock and children who brought much joy to her life.

Enemencio "Jesse" Mendoza
HITCHCOCK - Mr. Enemencio "Jesse" Mendoza passed from this life Wednesday evening, June 2, 2004, in Webster.
Born April 21, 1940, in Galveston, Mr. Mendoza had been a lifelong resident of Galveston County. He had been deputy with the Galveston County Sheriff's Department for 15 years, was a welder at Todd's Shipyard and served in the U. S. Air Force. Mr. Mendoza was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #10393, Boilermakers Union-Local #432 and enjoyed drawing, reading, making model cars and fishing. He will always be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, brother, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Enemencio and Lenor Mendoza; brother, Robert Mendoza and sister, Irene Rodriguez.
Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Rita Mendoza of Hitchcock; son, John Mendoza and wife, Melissa of Clear Lake; step-son, Ronald Ramirez and wife, Teresa of Alvin; daughters, Dianne Garban and husband, Kelly of Dickinson, Michelle Simpson and husband, Gabe of Texas City; sisters, Lydia Martinez and Candy Trevino, both of La Marque; special cousin, Julian Martinez of San Antonio and grandchildren, Dustin, Dayna, Kiara, Gabriel, Jacob, Samuel, Ronesa, Stephanie and Shelby.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Reverend John Kappe, Celebrant. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Dickinson under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
