Rai Benson Kelso

GALVESTON - Treasured husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed from this life at 4:00 p.m., March 31, 2004, at John Sealy Hospital, Galveston, Texas, after a very brief illness with pancreatic cancer. Rai was born in Galveston February 28, 1928, to Elizabeth Newkirk Kelso and Walter A. Kelso, Sr. He attended Galveston elementary schools, Culver Military Academy and SMU. He joined the United States Air Force in an effort to search for his brother, Walter, Jr., then a POW in Japan. Rai served his country as Director of Flight Operations in Okinawa.

Upon his return from military service, he joined one of the family’s Galveston-based businesses, Texas Gulf Construction Company. Ultimately he became President of W. A. Kelso Building Material Company, the company founded by his father, and President of Consolidated Building Supply and SHJARK Equipment Leasing. His creativity and entrepreneurial spirit prompted the creation of many vertically integrated companies. With friend and partner, W. R. Parker of Houston, Kelso formed Blue Water Dredging (which created Lake Madeline of Havre Lafitte). Kelso and Parker foresaw the benefit of intracoastal water transportation of building materials and through a company, Big Tow Barge Lines, designed and built the first barge used for intracoastal transportation of self-unloading bulk cement. Rai Kelso established his corporate headquarters within Kelso Industrial District, which was the beginning of real estate development on Port Industrial Boulevard. Another company at that site, Kel-Stress, made post-tensioned concrete beams used in port and highway construction. His most cherished business was Kelso Marine – a small but innovative tug, barge and ship building yard, one of the first in the nation to employ robotic welding and a syncrolift method of extracting vessels from the water for repair. Rai was named Maritime Man of the Year in 1975, for his continuous contributions to the maritime industry and for his revolutionary design of shallow-draft catamaran tugboats which provided enhanced handling in restricted, inland waterways. Kelso Marine was recognized for building the largest ocean-going tug/barge vessels in the world. In his later years he was President and CEO of Offats Bayou Terminal Corporation. His final business venture was a partnership with local businessmen and ANREM (American National Real Estate Management) in the development of South Shore Harbour, a 1500 acre, multi-use real estate development in League City, Texas.

Rai Kelso was a life-time member of the Bay Area Council Boy Scouts of America and served as a Board Member of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, 1st Bank of LaMarque and the U.S. National Bank (Frost Bank), Texas A&M Maritime Academy and the University of Texas Medical Branch Development Board. Kelso also served on numerous construction, building material and port authority advisory boards. He was asked to serve on Galveston’s first Beach Park Board. Reflecting his life-long love of sailing, he was both a Board member and Commodore of the Galveston Boat Club and the R. E. Bob Smith Yacht Club. Following in the tradition of his father and brothers, he provided regular but anonymous support of numerous small businesses and charities.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Lt. Walter A. Kelso, Jr. and wife Barbara B. Kelso, Alvin N. Kelso, parents, Elizabeth N. Kelso and Walter A. Kelso, Sr.

He is survived by wife, Margy R. Kelso, children Rai Elizabeth Thompson and husband Tommy, Larry Kelso and wife, Francey; and grandchildren Maggie Thompson Moerbe and husband Josh, Martha Bahr Thompson and fiancé Travis White, Paxton Kelso and wife Pamela, and Brice Kelso, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service in celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2216 Ball Street, Galveston, TX at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004. Family visitation will follow the memorial service at the Bob Smith Yacht Club, 601 Holiday Drive, Galveston, Texas.

The Kelso family would like to express its deepest appreciation for the outpouring of love of many neighbors and friends and the outstanding and loving care Rai received from the entire UTMB staff, especially the nurses and caregivers on the 6th and 10th floors of the John Sealy Towers.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to:
