GALVESTON - Mary Bolden, 83, passed away on December 29, 2003, in Houston.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2004, followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. at E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary with Rev. Ludy Lynch, Jr., officiating.
Mrs. Bolden was born February 4, 1920, in Brazoria, Texas, and was a longtime resident of Galveston and a homemaker.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, sister, other relatives and friends.

Marvin "Blackie" Eugene Blackburn, Sr.
GALVESTON - Marvin "Blackie" Eugene Blackburn, Sr., 84, of Galveston, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral mass will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica with Father John LaBauve, S.V.D. as Celebrant. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic cemetery in Dickinson.
The family will receive visitors after 5 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will be held at 6 p.m., led by Deacon John Pistone.
Marvin was born March 8, 1919, in Clawson, Texas. He came to Galveston as a member of the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Crockett. He met and married
his wife, Della Mae, and together they settled in Galveston to raise their family. Marvin was a World War II Veteran, serving in Northern France, Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He worked in maintenance for Falstaff Brewery until his retirement after thirty-six years of service. During his retirement years, Marvin couldn’t sit still. He was always doing something around his house and could be found all over town collecting aluminum cans for recycling. Marvin was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica where he served as an usher.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Della Mae Blackburn; seven brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Marvin E. Blackburn, Jr., and wife, Betty Lou, of Santa Fe, Fred Blackburn and wife, Jo Ann, of Houston; sisters, Annie Hall and Edna Stringer and husband, Hollis, all of Lufkin; six grandchildren, Bren Blackburn and wife, Elizabeth, of Texas City; Brian Blackburn, of Santa Fe, Tracy Ann Fogarty and husband, Kevin, of Crosby, Brad Blackburn, of Texas City, Betsy Villarreal and husband, Gilbert, of Santa Fe, and Douglas Blackburn and wife, Meg, of Houston; fourteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Pallbearers will be Bren Blackburn, Brian Blackburn, Brad Blackburn, Kevin Fogarty, Doug Blackburn, and Lester Walker.

Loretta Eleanor (Whitmore) Land
TEXAS CITY - Loretta Eleanor (Whitmore) Land, 74, of Texas City passed away Friday, January 9, 2004, at the Mainland Medical Center. Ms. Land was born March 1, 1929, in Roanoke, Virginia to Walter and Mary Whitmore. She was a 1946 graduate of Ball High School and a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Ms. Land is survived by two daughters, Linda Reagan Mueller and husband Bill of Texas City, Peggy Reagan Portugal and husband Carlos of Mesa, Arizona; one sister, Jeannette Fish and husband Bert of Lockhart, Texas; one sister-in-law, Hilda Whitmore of Anderson, Texas; six grandchildren, Billy Mueller, Paul Portugal, Wendy Palomera, Valerie Leach, John Portugal and KennaLyn Mueller; and twelve great grandchildren.
Memorial service and rosary will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at 7 p.m., in the chapel of the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque, Texas, with Father Frank Fabj officiating. Family will be accepting visitors Tuesday evening at the funeral home, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Jerry Lynn (Mudd) Valdez
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA - Jerry Lynn (Mudd) Valdez, 70, passed away on January 8, 2004, in Richmond, Virginia. She was born October 25, 1933, in Lufkin, Texas to Paul and Sallie Lankert. Jerry was a past resident of Galveston County for many years.
She is survived by her daughter Christie Pirlo and husband Rick, of Roy, Washington; grandson Trey Reihle and wife Becky of Anchorage, Alaska; granddaughter Angie Caughey and husband Mike of Richmond, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Jimmy and Ali Caughey of Richmond, Virginia; sister Ann Beeson and husband Bill of Louisiana; brother Ronnie Lankert of Texas. She also leaves behind other close relatives and many close friends.
Services were held Sunday, January 11, 2004, at Morrissett Funeral Home in Richmond, Virginia.
The family requests that donations be made in her name to the Ronald McDonald House.

TEXAS CITY - David Winfield Green (Moon), beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on January 10, 2004, at his residence in Texas City. He was born August 10, 1923, in Burkburnett, Texas and is preceded in death by his parents, George and Hattie Green, sister and brother-in-law Mozelle and Louise Gilbert, and his brother Donald Green.
David graduated from Wichita Falls High School. He attended the University of Texas for two years where he started and lettered for the Texas Football team in 1945. He played 59 minutes in the University of Texas’ 1946 Cotton Bowl victory over Missouri. He graduated from Midwestern University, where he also played football and was a two-year letterman. He was a teacher and coach in the State of Texas for thirty-five years. He coached at Munday for three years, Beeville for thirteen years and in Texas City at Blocker for nineteen years.
Coach Green (Moon) will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and the strength of his character. He expected nothing, but appreciated everything that everyone did for him. The bold witness of his life on earth was an inspiration to us all and made a positive impact on numerous lives that he coached during his career.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara Green; sisters Betty Sue Redwine and husband Terry and Patsy Istre and husband Kenneth; his children David W. Green Jr., Jacque Matthews and husband Ossie, Judy Green and Becky Jones; grandchildren, Christopher Ballard and wife, Kristin, Ashley Jones, Shea and Derrick Kennell; great-grandchildren, Angelica Major and Kierstyn Ballard. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and many loving friends.
A service honoring David’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at Emken-Linton Funeral Home. David Green’s brother-in-law, Kenneth Istre, will be officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 13, 2004, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Forest Park East cemetery.
John Barnes, Tom Kellett, James Mayne, Bill Mearse, Larry Parker and Paul Salazar will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are as follows, Kristin Ballard, Kenneth Brooks, Joe DeCuir, Dr. Bobby Garcia, Dr. Hinton Hamilton, Tex Kassen, Terry Redwine, Dr. John Reeves, and Homer Soliz.

LEAGUE CITY - Grace B. Hatfield, 96, departed this life on January 11, 2004. She was a longtime resident of League City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. Hatfield.
She is survived by several family members and friends. Visitation will be at the Forest Park East Funeral Home from 5 - 7 p.m., on Wednesday, January 14, 2004. Funeral services will be held in the Forest Park East Chapel at 12:30 p.m., on Thursday, January 15, 2004. Interment will be in the Forest Park Lawndale cemetery.

Captain Alan Baggs
HITCHCOCK- Captain Alan Baggs passed from this life Monday, January 12, 2004, in Galveston.
Born November 1, 1924, in Gatesherd, England, Captain Baggs had been a resident of Hitchcock for fifty years. He had been employed at Lykes Brothers Steamship Co. for forty-five years as a Master Mariner with the Merchant Marines. He left Great Britain at a young age and served his country during World War II. Captain Baggs later immigrated to the USA in 1949. He continued his support by serving in the Korean and Vietnam War He attended Peace Lutheran Church, and was a member of the Master, Mates, and Pilots Association, Park Place Masonic Lodge, #1171 in Houston and the El Mina Shrine Temple in Galveston where he was a member of the Royal Jester's Court.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth (Wilson) Baggs and brother, Edward Baggs.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-six years, Eva Baggs of Hitchcock; sons and daughters-in-law, David Baggs of Hitchcock, Eric and Vicki Baggs of Santa Fe, Kurt Baggs of Talisheek, Louisiana; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Phil Castonguay of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Drew and Megan Castonguay, Eric and Samantha Baggs and Justin Bailey.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2004, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. before the service.
Captain Baggs was very dedicated to the support and care of burned and crippled children, his request is that in lieu of flowers, memorials in the form of donations be sent to the Shriners Burns Hospital, 815 Market Street, Galveston, TX 77550, Attn: Administration.
