GALVESTON - Mrs. Elvine Durst Brown was born to the late Joseph Durst, Sr., and Hattie Thompson Durst on June 16, 1927, in Carthorna, Texas, Brazos County. On Monday, January 12, 2004, Mrs. Brown was peacefully called home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She accepted Christ at an early age. Her Christian experience lead her to join Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Galveston, Texas. She was educated in the State School for the Blind in Austin, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 1223 32nd Street, Galveston, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 1223 32nd Street, Galveston, Texas, with the Rev. Paul Wingate Officiating.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Edward Brown; brother, Joseph Durst, Jr.; and sister, Alberta Lewis.
The love and affection she felt for her nieces and nephews, was like that of a loving mother. She leaves her memories to be cherished by Mrs. Irma Phillips of Galveston, Texas; Brenda Etienne, Deborah Durst and Carolyn Durst all of Houston, Texas; Lisa Phillips of Beaumont, Texas; Dr. Linda Morse of Kenosha, Wisconsin; nephews: James Durst of Denver, Colorado, Andrew White and Melvin White both of Galveston, Texas; a very devoted great niece, Nicole Etienne Jules of Houston, Texas; great nieces, Namisha Joiner and Brittney Etienne both of Houston, Texas; great nephew, Bryant Durst of Denver, Colorado; uncle, L.C. Thompson of Navasota; and a host of loving family members and friends.

LA MARQUE - Ms. Lelia Pratt, 94, passed away, Thursday, January 15, 2004, at Hearthstone Care Center in Texas City, Texas. Ms. Pratt was born October 5, 1909, in Deport, Texas, to Dan and Lottie Porter. She was a resident of La Marque for over fifty-two years and formerly of Galveston, as well as a member of Mainland Church of Christ in La Marque. Ms. Pratt was a school teacher for thirty-six years, for both Galveston ISD and La Marque ISD; an author of a well known book "Thirty-Six Years of Teaching and Then Some"; a translator for the US Government during World War II; and a member of the Ladies Auxillary VFW in La Marque.
Ms. Pratt is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald L. Pratt; her sister Helen Jones; and her brother Buck Porter. She is survived by one son, Dan Pratt; three sisters, Linnie Ray from Kerville, Texas, Irene Keener from Fort Worth, Texas, and Virginia McAllister from Fayetteville, Arkansas; and one brother, Steve Porter of Paris, Texas.
A committal service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Grace Memorial Park in the Mausoleum, with Mr. Tom Medlin officiating. Arrangements under the direction of the James Crowder Funeral Home, La Marque, Texas.

GALVESTON - Kenneth E. Palmer, Sr., "Pa", 80, of Galveston, Texas, passed from this life peacefully at his home Friday morning, January 16, 2004.
A graveside service will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Forest Park East cemetery on I-45 at League City officiated by Dr. Asbury Lennox.
Mr. Palmer was born October 18, 1923, in Webb City, Oklahoma. He was a resident of Galveston since 1954.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Jackie "Ma" Palmer of Galveston; sons Kenneth Palmer Jr. and wife Bonnie, and Mickey Palmer and wife Janet. His grandchildren include Keith Palmer and wife Melissa of Dickinson, Texas, Karen Palmer Sinclair and husband Phillip of Fort Hood, Texas, Mandy, Abby and Casey Palmer, all of Galveston; great-grandchildren include Katie Palmer of Dickinson and Regan and Ryan Sinclair of Ft. Hood, Texas; brothers are Joe, Albert and Earl; and sister Elma Stafford.
Kenneth Palmer, Sr. was loved and cared for dearly by his wife, sons and families. He took great pride and had much love for his family.
Kenneth and Jackie Palmer are members of Moody Memorial Methodist Church. He was well-known in the Houston and Galveston construction industry.

The family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nurses on staff in the Geriatric Unit at UTMB, the AMED Hospice nurses and special thanks to Jean and Brenda Drake who helped make him so comfortable during his last few weeks.

A. B. "Sonny" Cocek
A. B. "Sonny" Cocek, 80, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2004. He was born in West, Texas on December 30, 1923, to Bob and Jennie Cocek. His Family moved to Galveston when he was five, where he attended schools in Galveston. After graduation, he worked as a sheet metal worker until he joined the U.S. Army in January 1943. He trained as a combat engineer and was attached to the 2726th Eng. Light Equipment Co. where he earned his marksmanship rifle badge. After his completion of training in the U.S. and Canada, he was shipped to Europe where he participated in the Rhineland campaign. When V-E day was declared, he was then shipped to the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre until V-J day. He was honorably discharged January 1946, at the rank of Sgt. The decorations he received were the American Theatre Campaign Medal. EAME Campaign Medal, 2 Bronze Stars, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, 1 Service Stripe and 2 Overseas Bars. He went back to work at his previous job when he decided to try his sea legs. In 1950, he sailed on a few Liberty Ships before he joined the S.I.U. in 1952, and went to work for G&H Towing until 1980 when he retired as a Captain. That same year he became a co-owner of the Texas City Boat Association until his final retirement in 2000.
Sonny is preceded in death by his wife of forty-six years Faye in 2002, and his brother Chuck in 1987.
He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Linda and Floyd Arndt; his son and his wife, Wade and Terri Cocek; two grandchildren, Clint Arndt and Lillian Cocek. Also numerous relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held 1-8 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Forest Park East Funeral Home. Services will be held 3 p.m. in the afternoon Monday, January 19, 2004, at Forest Park East Funeral Home with burial to follow in Forest Park East cemetery.

GALVESTON — Eva A. Wyatt Bryant, 80, died Friday, January 16, 2004.
Funeral services for Eva A. Wyatt Bryant, 80, of Galveston, will be held Monday, January 19th, at 10a.m., at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, in Galveston. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetary also in Galveston. A Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 18th, from 5p.m. to 8p.m., at the funeral home.
Eva was born in Port Arthur, Texas on August 14th, 1923, to the late Catarino Santana and wife, Luisa de la Garza. Eva was a life long resident of Galveston where she graduated from Ball High School in 1944 and retired from ANICO in 1984.
Preceeded in death by her parents and one son, John Thomas Wyatt, of Galveston, Eva leaves behind 5 loving children, Evelyn Parry and husband, Thomas, of Indianapolis, George Walter Wyatt Jr., of Galveston, Edward Eugene Wyatt and wife, Denise, of San Marcos, Carolyn Gandara and husband, Elifonso Gandara, of Galveston and Mildred Barajas and husband, Mark of Alvin. Mrs. Bryant also leaves behind 23 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren and numerous family and friends.
Pall bearers will include George Walter Wyatt, III, Gilbert Villarreal Jr., Efren Villarreal, John Thomas Wyatt, Jr., Ponch Gandara and Mark Barajas.

LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA — Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, January 18, 2004, at St. Paul Catholic Church for Gertrude Pendelton, 99, who died at Lafayette General Medical Center on January 14, 2004. Dismissal services will be Monday, January 19, 2004, at 10 a.m., and she will be buried in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Mausoleum.
Mrs. Pendelton is survived by her nieces, Sandra Mouton, of Lafayette, Dolisk Mozolinski, of San Diego, California; her nephew, Ronald McElroy, of San Diego, California, Victor McElroy, of Lafayette and a host of great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends here and in Galveston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Cora Thomas; her husband of 60 years, Leroy Edward Pendelton; her sisters, Margaret Feast, Gladys Thomas, Gertie Thomas, Leola Thomas McElroy.
Mrs. Gertrude Pendelton was a member of the Altar Society, and the Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Peter Claver Madonna Court #20, where she was a member and served as the Grand Lady for fifty years.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m., until time of service Sunday, at St. Paul Catholic Church, and from 7 a.m., Monday, until time of dismissal at St. Paul.

Patrick Francis Scully, 78, of Galveston, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2004, at his residence.
A Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 18th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Frank Fabj officiating.
Patrick was born November 22, 1925, in Ireland. He received his Doctorate of Theology and became a Catholic priest. The Church sent him to the U.S. where he served as a priest in Mississippi and Louisiana. After he retired as a priest, he worked as a school teacher in California. Patrick eventually moved to Galveston and worked as a Senior Systems Analyst for American National Insurance Company until his retirement after 25 years of service. Patrick had a love for reading, classical music, and always lent a helping hand to those in need.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Kathleen Scully; his sister, Mary Scully; and his brother, Billy Scully.
Patrick is survived by his daughters, Kathleen and Maura; sisters, Anne, Pauline, Breeda, and Roisin; brothers, Tommy, Johnny, and Peter; granddaughter, Meghan; and numerous other relatives and friends.
