GALVESTON — Mattie Elizabeth Washington, 64, departed this life on Sunday, December 12, 2004, at her residence.
Visitation will begin on Friday, December 17, 2004, at 4 p.m. followed by a wake service from 7 - 8 p.m. at E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary.
A service celebrating her life will held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2004, at Compton Memorial C.O.G.I.C. with Elder R.E. Woodard, III, officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview cemetery.
Mattie was born September 10, 1940, in Kountze, Texas to McKinley, Sr. and Mattie Harold Haynes. A longtime resident of Galveston, she was a member of the Arms of Discretion, the Sunlight Baptist Church and a former member of the Eastern Stars.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three children.
She leaves with cherished memories, son, Donald Washington; daughters, Evelyn Pomier and Wanda Love all of Galveston; eleven grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren; play daughter, Florence Williams; brothers, McKinley Haynes, Jr. ( Idell) of Galveston, Elder Joe Haynes (Ruthie) of La Marque and Joe Willie Haynes (Angel) of Texas City; sisters, Huelean Thompson of Beaumont, Texas and Florence Marie Gardner of Galveston; devoted friend and ex husband, Charlie Washington; devoted play sisters, Evelyn Boxley, Rose Price and Mary Profit; host of nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.

Clarence Louis (Tommy) Thompson
GALVESTON — Clarence Louis (Tommy) Thompson of Galveston passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at the age of 82. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2004, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home in Galveston; Father Frank Fabj will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. prior to the memorial service. A private burial will be held at Galveston Memorial Park.
Tommy Thompson was born on February 10, 1922. He spent his childhood growing up in a large family in central Louisiana. As a young man in the early 1940s, Tommy joined the Merchant Marines. Thus began a journey that led him around the world by ship with his younger brothers as they served during WWII. It was on one of his frequent visits to Galveston that he met and married
his wife Dolly Mize.
After finishing his Merchant Marine service, Tommy and Dolly settled in Galveston and adopted a son and daughter. He possessed an entrepreneurial spirit and succeeded in many business endeavors throughout his working years. He was always well respected throughout the business community. He was the founding owner of Tom's Thumb nursery.
In retirement Tommy was surrounded by loved ones, and he enjoyed many favorite pastimes. He was an avid sportsman and spent much of his time hunting and fishing. His other love was gardening. Family and friends were grateful year-round recipients of Tommy's bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables.
Tommy was preceded in death by parents Molly and Issac, brothers Ellis, Leonard, Pete, Toby, and sister Myrtle. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Dolly Thompson; daughter Peggy Cornelius of Galveston, Cary Cornelius of Galveston; son Nicolas Thompson of Beaumont; granddaughters Ashye Peyrovi, Callye Peyrovi, Janelle Thompson, Natalie McClain and Nichole Mangum. Other survivors include brothers Dennis "Buck" Thompson and Hershel Thompson, sister Marie Thompson, nieces Cindy Thompson and Tammy Thompson, nephews Hank Thompson and Red Thompson, Carmen Thompson Schrull, and Tommy's beloved dog, Molly. Many great nieces and nephews also survive him. Tommy will be remembered as a caring husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

George Karnes Pheneger
DICKINSON — George Karnes Pheneger, 84, took his final curtain call at his home in Dickinson on Sunday, December 12, 2004, with his daughter at his side. Born August 5, 1920, in Dorris, California, his boyhood was spent in San Francisco and the logging camps of Northern California. Following a 2 year round–the-world trip on a Swedish freighter, George served in the Army Air Corps as a flight trainer during World War II. Following that he worked for the Monsanto Company in Dayton, Ohio, and in Texas City for almost 40 years. He was an avid and award-winning photographer, active in Boy Scouts both as a youth and as an adult, and was an organizer and charter member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dickinson, where he lived for 50 years. George will be remembered for his characterization of Ebenezer Scrooge at the annual Dickens-on-the Strand festival, a part he played for many years, and his many performances in area theatres.
Mr. Pheneger was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Morris Pheneger, and is survived by his sister, Glenda Tomaselli of Oakland, California; his son, Nathan; his daughter, Bethany Pheneger and her husband Kelly Babb, all of Dickinson; and his granddaughter, Alexandra Pheneger, of Linkoping, Sweden.
His ashes will be spread on his beloved Northern California coast. Special thanks go to Lakshmi, Kim, Angie, and Codi, of the Hospice Care Team, Inc., for their assistance and comfort to both George and his family.

PLANO — Valerie A. Greer entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Plano, Texas. She was born in Galveston, Texas to Fred and Valerie Gould. She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Lee Brown and grandchildren, John and Lee Ann Nutting, and brother, Fred R. Gould.
Funeral mass will be 11 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2004, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father John Paul Flajole as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Galveston's Oleander cemetery.

Wilson Benton Bridges
DICKINSON – Wilson Benton Bridges died December 12, 2004. Born May 2, 1924, he graduated from Reagan High School and Rice University. He served in World War II and for many years in the Army reserve. He enjoyed a long career as a Chemical Engineer and was a long time resident of Dickinson, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Bridges; children, Lisa DelMonico and Lloyd Bridges; grandchildren, Holly DelMonico and Max Bridges, and sisters, Ruby Barton and Joy Rodgers.

Otis Morris O'Callaghan, Sr.
SANTA FE — Mr. Otis Morris O'Callaghan, Sr. passed from this life Wednesday evening, December 15, 2004, in Webster.
Born August 21, 1933, in Galveston, Mr. O'Callaghan had been a resident of Santa Fe for 44 years, previously of Galveston. He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator with Union Local #450 and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, formerly a member of Crockett Place Methodist Church in Galveston. He was an active member of the John Mitchell Masonic Lodge, #1401 AF & AM in Hitchcock. Mr. O'Callaghan enjoyed training horses and had once managed the Meacum Ranch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis O'Callaghan and Margaret (Forrester) White; sister, Patricia O'Callaghan and brother, Clyde O'Callaghan.
Survivors include his wife of over 45 years, Jean O'Callaghan of Santa Fe; sons and daughters-in-law, Otis and Jeanie O'Callaghan, Jr. of Dickinson, Troy and Stephanie O'Callaghan of The Woodlands; daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Dwayne Johnson of Houston; sister, Edith Achille of Arcadia; brothers, Bobby White of Waller, Ronnie Ostermayer of Hitchcock; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and of the family.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 2004, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Reverend Noy Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park cemetery with Masonic rites under the auspices of the John Mitchell Masonic Lodge, #1401 AF & AM.

George Morris Kirschner, Jr.
LA MARQUE — George Morris Kirschner, Jr., 60 of La Marque passed away Tuesday December 14, 2004, at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City, Texas.
George was born August 25, 1944 in Galveston, Texas, the son of George M. Kirschner, Sr. and Jimmie Merle (Meadows) Kirschner. He was a lifetime resident of La Marque and graduate of La Marque High School, Class of 1962. After high school George served his country in the United States Marine Corps, serving two tours of duty in Viet Nam. He was employed at International Specialty Products in Texas City for over 35 years as an operator. He was a member of Highlands Baptist Church. George was a Master Mason, belonging to the La Marque and Texas City Masonic Lodges; he also was a Shriner and, in the past, enjoyed being "Jackpot" the clown with the Shriners Clowns. With his wife Terri, he was a member of the La Marque Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
George is survived by his loving wife, Terri L. Kirschner of La Marque; his mother Jimmie Merle Meadows Kirschner of Texas City; son Phillip Andrew Kirschner of La Marque; daughter Heather Marie Kirschner of Texas City; his aunts, Marie Kirschner of Galveston, Kate Meadows of Galveston, Allene Curtis of Canada; his uncle and aunt, Buddy and Pat Kirschner of Hitchcock; and other family, friends and loved ones too numerous to list. He was known and loved by many from the community, his work and his church for his friendliness, sense of humor and zest for life.
Visitation will be Friday, December 17, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be 7 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the James Crowder Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 2004, at Highlands Baptist Church in La Marque, with the Rev. Roy Joe Ham and the Rev. Leo Smith, officiating. Graveside services will follow and be under the auspices of the La Marque Chapter of the Eastern Star at Forest Park East cemetery in Webster.
Pallbearers will be Buddy Kirschner, Gary Kirschner, Gordon S. "Bubba" Kirschner, Mike Martin, Jim Curtis and John Harrell. His faithful and loving friends, co-workers and family are all considered as Honorary Pallbearers.
