Ella Rosetta Laura House Rassin, S.R.N.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Mrs. Ella Rosetta Laura House Rassin, S.R.N., of Nassau, Bahamas, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2005.
Mrs. Rassin was born in Woolich, Kent, England on March 31, 1909, and raised in Ipswich, England.
She received her Nursing Education degree in Great Britain and was awarded her nursing license on June 24, 1932. She completed postgraduate training at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where she graduated in 1936. She was a Theatre Staff Nurse at the hospital and later a Theatre Sister at Plantation Nursing Home. She joined the Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service and assisted with the wounded in London during World War II.
Nurse Rassin was an Operating Theatre Nurse, specializing in the treatment of burned pilots during the war. She met her future husband, Dr. Meyer Rassin, while assisting him during a surgical procedure. They fell in love and married
in 1942. In 1947, they moved to Nassau with their two sons, David and Barry, three weeks after Barry was born.
During the early years in Nassau she devoted herself to making a home for her young children and husband. These early years were a major transition for her, but she adapted well to her new tropical home. She rode her bicycle to the store for groceries and dealt with the heat of the summer, which was an enormous change from the weather in England.
As Dr. Rassin’s clinical practice grew, she rejoined him as a member of his clinical team in the new clinic he established on Frederick Street. In 1955, she played a major role in the building and opening of The Rassin Hospital, where she would serve as Head Nurse from its opening until she retired in 1983.
Nurse Rassin was the "healing hands" of The Rassin Hospital and was loved by her patients. They always felt better when visiting because of her comforting and empathizing demeanor and her inner-strength was often a factor in their recovery. She certainly lived up to the reference she received from Dr. N. S. Carruthers, F.R.C.S. who, in 1937, said that she "…will go far in her profession, partly as the result of her kindness to all but also as the result of her nursing skill." She strove to be a true example of what a nurse should be always and tried to emulate the founder of the nursing profession, Florence Nightingale.
Mrs. Rassin is survived by her son David, Assistant Dean of Continuing Education and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas and her daughter-in-law Glennda. She is also survived by her son Barry, who is the CEO of Doctors Hospital Health System and her daughter-in-law Esther. She was proud of her six grandchildren, Pascale, Michele, Anthony, Meya, Keith and Heather and her nine great-grandchildren Nathaniel and Isabella Pulley; Joshua and Sophia Rassin; Alexandra, Hunter, and Parker Edwards; and Erik and Jaden Whiting. She is also survived by her sister Augusta House of Ipswich, England.
