SANTA FE — Mr. William P. 'Billy' Kohn passed from this life Monday, January 10, 2005, in Algoa.
Born October 8, 1926, in Galveston, Mr. Kohn had been a lifelong resident of Galveston County, having lived in Santa Fe since 1957. He had been a maintenance worker at Union Carbide for 33 years, was a member of Ironworkers Union Local #135 in La Marque, served in the US Navy and was of the Lutheran faith. Mr. Kohn had owned and operated Billy's Place from 1986 to 1998 and enjoyed fishing, hunting and the dog races.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Mae Kohn; parents, Richard August Ferdinand Kohn and Eveline Terrebone Rhodes; daughter, Joan Marie Kohn Skillman; son, Richard William Kohn; brothers, Elmer Kohn and Robert 'Bob' Kohn.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Lee Kohn; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Leona Kohn of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Rick and Debi Skillman of Santa Fe, Julie Carlisle, Karen Carlisle, both of Illinois, great-grandchildren, Britni Skillman, Skyler Skillman, Christopher 'C.J.' Skillman; nephews, Robert 'Bobby' Kohn, Jr. and wife, Carol, Arthur Kohn, Jr. and wife, Mara, Timothy Kohn and wife, Pam, Mark Kohn, Richard R. Kohn and niece, Debra L. Dykema and husband, Walter.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Pastor David Tessman officiating.

Phillip Eugene Evans, Sr. "Baby Boy"
HITCHCOCK — Phillip Eugene Evans, Sr. received his reward of eternal rest on Thursday, January 6, 2005, at his residence.
Phillip was born in Galveston, Texas to the late Walter Evans, Sr. and Gladys Ryan Evans on February 17, 1947. He was a graduate of Central High School and was a Mechanic. Phillip served in the Vietnam War in 1966. He returned home with an honorable discharge.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter James Evans, Sr. and Gladys Louise Ryan Evans; five sisters, Myrna Rae Evans, Parmerlee Evans Wilkie, Violet Hayward, Fannie Evans Brown and Patricia Evans; one brother, Walter J. Evans, Jr. and his wife, Edna Evans.
He leaves to cherish his life, love and memories, his son, Phillip Evans, Jr. of Houston; a daughter, Patrice Evans of San Antonio; a brother, John Evans (Lisa) of Galveston; sisters, Gladys Evans, Edwina Donald both of La Marque; Kay Evans of Hitchcock, Marva K. Bagby of Galveston; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Collins of Galveston; an aunt, Roxie Ann Odoms of Los Angeles, California; three grandchildren of San Antonio and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m., Friday, January 14, 2005, at the Mainland Funeral Home Chapel in La Marque with pastor Nathaniel Brown, officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time Friday in the funeral home chapel.

SANTA FE — Mrs. Virginia Ann Burk passed from this life Monday, January 10, 2005, in Texas City after a long illness.
Born June 4, 1939, in Madisonville, Mrs. Burk had been a resident of Santa Fe since 1966, previously of La Marque and Madisonville. She was a homemaker and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She enjoyed growing flowers and loved her family, especially her grandsons.

Parten, survivors include her husband of over 45 years, Robert 'Bob' Burk of Santa Fe; mother, Wilma Parten of Madisonville, daughter and son-in-law, Melondy and Arthur Bender of Santa Fe; son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Teresa Burk, Jr. of Santa Fe; brothers and sister-in-law, Earl Wayne and Janet Parten, Jack Parten, all of Madisonville; sister, Julia Parten of Madisonville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha L. and Walter 'Sonny' Benskin of Kennard; grandchildren, Adam and Rebeca Bender of Houston, Chris Bender of Santa Fe; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2005, at Madisonville Funeral Home with Dr. J. Keith Brayles officiating. Interment will follow at Madisonville City cemetery.

Catherine Mathis Bales
LA MARQUE — Catherine Mathis Bales, 83, died January 10, 2005 at the Gulf Health Care Center, Texas City.
Catherine was born in Minden, Texas on October 26, 1921, and married
Frank Bales February 4, 1952. Catherine was a graduate of Texas City High School and the College of the Mainland. She was active in The First United Methodist Church of La Marque and served in many different positions. She served several years as a Facilitator for a Cancer Support Group with the local American Cancer Society.
She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Cleone Mathis and daughter Karla Bales Glass.
Survivors include her husband Frank Bales, La Marque, Texas; sons Matt Bales and wife Judy and Barry Bales and wife Janet of Austin, Texas; daughter Orell Bales Russell and husband Tracy of Garland, Texas; ten grandchildren; and sisters Ruth Turner and Nelda Mathis of Sedona, Arizona and Frankye Miller of Little Rock, Arkansas.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005, at The First United Methodist Church of La Marque.

Juanita R. Valdez
GALVESTON — Juanita R. Valdez entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Edgewater Retirement Community at the age of 83. Mrs. Valdez was born on November 21, 1921 to the union of the late Miguel and Louisa Rivas. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Valdez, Jr. and also one of her sons, Joseph Valdez, III.
As a longtime resident of Galveston Island, Mrs. Valdez worked for many years in some of the island’s oldest and favorable restaurants, some such as “The Old Mexico Restaurant”, “The Loma Linda Café” and also Galveston island’s“ The Taco House”. Some will remember her for the wonderful service she shared with her many friends and patrons.
Mrs. Valdez leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted companion, Mr. Julius Mejia of Galveston, Texas; and also her son, Jim Valdez and wife, Mary Ann of Houston, Texas. Sharing in her loss, also, are Mrs. Valdez’s three grandchildren, Anthony Valdez, Alina Valdez Pena; and husband, Joe and Joe Valdez; She is also survived by five sisters, Marcy Borsellino of Rohnert Park, California, Carmen Luna of Woodland, California, Cruz Morales of New Braunfels, Texas, Susana Robles, also of New Braunfels, Texas and Severa Silvas of Duncanville, Texas; her brother, Mike Rivas of New Boston, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Stella Valdez, wife of Joseph Valdez, III, numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, a host of other loving family and friends.
She will be sadly missed by all those who knew her and loved her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2005, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Galveston, with Fr. John Bok, O.F.M., Pastor, as Celebrant. Burial will follow services Saturday at Calvary cemetery, also in Galveston. A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2005, followed by The Rosary, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home, Galveston, with Deacon John Pistone of St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, Galveston, reciting. Mrs. Valdez’s family will be receiving friends for visitation at the funeral home Friday evening after 5 p.m.
Pallbearers will be The Honorable Judge Roy M. Quintanilla, Pete Quintanilla, Joe Pena, Martin Robles, Ray Morales and Mark Opphile.

SANTA FE — Ruby I. Arldt, 79, passed away April 1, 2005, in Webster, Texas. She was born April 6, 1925, in Kaufman, Texas to John and Sarah Dodd. She retired as co-owner of Tri-Co Electronics and was a member of Rebeccas in Texas City, Texas City Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycees in La Marque.
She is preceded in death by late husband, Ray Peterson; grandson, Robbie Wright; three sisters, Ruthie Mae McCarty, Sybil Oxford, Mildred Belcher and her brother, J. T. Dodd.
Ruby is survived by her husband of 20 years, Fred Walter Arldt; two daughters, Martha Norwood and husband, Rick, Barbara Wright and husband, Danny; son, John Allen and wife, Terrie; two step daughters, Regina Smith and husband, Lawrence and Fredlyn Wideman; two sisters, Mary Vivian Cunningham and Joyce Leopard; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Ola Morrow Chapel cemetery in Kaufman, Texas on Monday, April 4, 2005, at 1 p.m. The family will have a private visitation at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas.
