Willa V. Newton
Willa V, Newton, formerly of Beaumont, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2003, at UTMB Hospital after a valiant struggle to continue her active life. Villa was born in Adkins, Texas on February 14, 1912, the youngest of nine children, to Julia and George McKeen. She moved to Galveston as a teenager and graduated from Ball High, where she was proud to have been a member of the Girl's Basketball Team. She met her husband of 58 years, Harry Newton, at American National Insurance Co., where they both worked. Later, in Beaumont, she worked for 25 years as secretary to the Head of the Vocational School at Lamar University. On her retirement, she immediately became a volunteer at Baptist Hospital and worked in the chaplain's office, gift shop, and information desk for twenty-five years. Thoughout her life, she contributed wherever she was with her positive friendly attitude, competence and active participation. For the last two years she has enjoyed living at Moody House in Galveston.
Willa Newton is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Newton; daughter Carol and her eight siblings.
She is survived by her daughters, Janet Newton and Sandra Linton; grandson Andrew Linton and wife Karen and their children Gillian, Vaughn and Lewis, and grandson Douglas Linton and wife Eva and children Naomi, Nora, Emilia, and Esther and many nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered as a friend, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was always a good sport and who lived her life with love and wisdom.
Her family wishes to thank Dr. Mercado, Jonne Davis and the staff of the Geriatric Clinic; the nurses and staff of the Geriatric Acute Care Unit and Dr. Everst and the staff of the SICU at UTMB Hospital for their competent and compassionate care.
Graveside services and interment will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2003, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park of Beaumont. Rev. James Blackwell will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time in Forest Lawn Funeral Home.
There will be a Service of Remembrance at Edgewater Retirement Center, with plans to be announced.

Ruth Thompson Bell Ulrich
HITCHCOCK - Mrs. Ruth Thompson Bell Ulrich, 74, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2003, at her home. Ruth, the eldest of eight children, was born to Willie Alma and Primas Thompson, Sr. on March 17, 1929, in Reagan, Falls County, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Primas Thompson, Jr.; and sister, Syretha Hairston.
Left to forever cherish her memories are her daughters, Dr. Ollie J. Bell Davis (Jesse) of Channelview and Alma L. Bell Mack (William) of La Marque; grandsons, Donyae Nathaniel Davis (Ingrid) of Houston, Staff Sergeant Jesse DeWayne Davis, Sr. (Jessica) of Dyes Air Force Base, Abilene, and Roddrick Russell Mack of La Marque; granddaughter, LaShonda Ruth Mack of La Marque; great-grandchildren, Vanessa Davis, Jasmine Davis and Yaniece Davis all of Houston and Jesse DeWayne Davis, Jr. of Abilene, Texas.
Ruth also leaves behind one brother, Samme Thompson (Janet) of Chicago; four sisters, Eunice Parrish (George) of Houston, Bettye Bruno (Joseph) of Houston, Mattye Reymont of Chicago, and Jacquelyn Belton (John, Sr.) of Houston; Godson, Rev. Jeffrey Hunter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, 302 Oak Street North, Texas City, Rev. D.N. Benford, officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Burial will at Mainland Memorial cemetery in Hitchcock under the direction of Mainland Funeral Home of LaMarque. WEST TEXAS CITY - Mrs. Earmer L Holmes passed away Monday, July 28, 2003, at UTMB Hospital in Galveston.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, August 1, 2003, at the Mainland Funeral Home Chapel in La Marque. A vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1224 Cedar Dr. in La Marque with Msgr. T. Joseph Culver, celebrant. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park cemetery in Hitchcock.
Mrs. Holmes was born in Cutoff, Louisiana to the late Joseph Anthony and Cora Crechein Sam. She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. She was employed with St. Mary's Hospital in Galveston as a Central Supply Technician.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Abraham Holmes Jr. and four siblings.

GALVESTON - Mila Musich, 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at UTMB Hospital.
Mila was born in Lumbarda, Yugoslavia on March 21, 1906. She moved to Galveston, December 30, 1952, where she worked for many years at Sacred Heart School cafeteria. Recently, she was a resident of Gulf Health Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mandalina Musich, sister, Mary Musich Lozica and brother-in-law, John B. Lozica, Sr.
She is survived by her nephew, John B. Lozica, Jr. and wife, Martha, of Houston; her nieces, Mary Milos and Cecilia Carlson and husband, Oscar, of Galveston; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors after 5 p.m., Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m., led by Father Beni Wego.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, August 1, 2003, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with Father Frank Fabj officiating. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Catholic cemetery.

GALVESTON - Ricky Vernard Williams, 40, passed away July 27, 2003, at Park Plaza Hospital in Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 1, 2003, at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston, Texas with Rev H. Jerry Temple officiating. Graveside services will follow at Mainland Memorial cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., July 31, 2003, at the funeral home with a wake to be held at 7p.m.
Ricky was born May 30, 1963, in Galveston, Texas to Charlie Bert and Margie Mitchell Williams. He attended Galveston public schools, graduating from Ball High School with the Class of 1983. He was employed by Mariner Health Services of Houston for more than ten years at the time his illness forced him to retire.

Williams of Fort Hood, Texas and Hattie Jackson and husband, Robert of Pinole, California; brothers, Nathan Williams and Larry Williams and wife, Carriso all of Galveston and Cleveland Williams of San Antonio, Texas; stepsisters, Bonita Scott and husband, William of Dickinson, Demetra Edwards of Houston and Johnese Edwards of Galveston; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

Ann Ashworth Futrell, 65, passed on to her heavenly home on July 26, 2003.
She is survived by three daughters, Stacy and husband Glenn Zoch of Winchester; Shelley and husband Jimmy Espinoza of Cibolo; Ashley and husband Jase Fairey of Texas City; six grandchildren and one great grandchild; sister Sandra Medley; and brother, Dennis Ashworth; several nieces and nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by one daughter La Dona Henkel and her parents Finis and Helen Ashworth. Visitation was held on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Marrs-Jones Funeral Home in Smithville, Texas from 12 p.m. - 9 p.m. Graveside service will be held 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Monthalia cemetery in Cost, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 4p.m. on Wednesday July 30, 2003, at St. John's United Methodist Church in Texas City, Texas. Marrs-Jones Funeral Home of Smithville, Texas is in charge of arrangements.

GALVESTON - Willie Lee "Wiley" Winn, 57, departed this life on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at UTMB Hospital, Galveston, Texas.
A quiet hour will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the chapel of Fields Funeral Services. Graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Houston National cemetery, Houston, Texas.
Mr. Winn was born September 12, 1945, in Madisonville, Texas. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran.
Survivors include, his wife, Ezora Durand; sons, Terry, Ernest, Larry and Leonard Durand; daughters, Willonia and D'Angela Durand and Bridgett Jones; three grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; devoted cousin, James (Joyce) Brooks; other relatives and friends.
