Dolores Leija, 36, passed away, Friday, July 18, 2003, at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Gathering for visitation will be held Monday, July 21, 2003, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home, Galveston. Ms. Leija’s family will be receiving friends at the funeral home, Monday, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Although born in Reynosa, Tamps, Mexico, Dolores has made Galveston Island her home and also the place she wanted to make her living. Some may know Dolores through her employment with American National Insurance Company in the food service area.
Dolores leaves behind her loving family, parents, Juan and Aurora Leija, 1 daughter, Janet Amaro and also 3 sons, Juan Carlos Leija, Nelson Isaias Leija and Santiago Amaro. She also leaves behind her loving sisters; Esperanza Leija and Sanjuana Hernandez, brothers; Ricardo Isaias Leija, Gregoria Leija, Alejandro Juvenal Leija and Miguel Angel Leija, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cipriano "Spark Plug" Ruiz
GALVESTON — Cipriano "Spark Plug" Ruiz, 73, passed away, July 16, 2003, at Cornerstone Hospital in Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 21, 2003, at Reyna De La Paz, Galveston, Texas, with Father Serafin Cejudo, celebrant. Graveside services will follow at Galveston Memorial Park cemetery, in Hitchcock, Texas. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 20, 2003, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home with a Rosary and Vigil to be held at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Ruiz was born on September 26, 1929, in Villa Juarez, San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Gregorio and Locadia Bahena Ruiz. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. To all that knew him he was a compassionate individual who put his family first. He loved all of the kids and will be sorely missed. He came to the United States in 1947 and was sworn in as a Citizen of the United States soon after. He loved to hunt wild turkey, play Bingo and was an avid Astros fan. He was employed as a Longshoreman and retired after more than 30 years as a member of ILA 20.
preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Ruiz is survived by his wife of 25 years, Maria Ruiz of Galveston; daughters, Francisca Peralez and husband, Manuel and Esther Soto and husband, Lorenzo all of Houston; sons, Cipriano Ruiz, Jr. of Galveston, Juan Lerma and wife, Obdulia of Galveston and Jorge Lerma and wife, Maria of Del Rio; step-daughter, Jasmin Lerma of Houston; 14 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; sister, Alicia Ruiz of Tampico, Mexico; brothers, Julio and wife, Gregoria and Anastacio Ruiz and wife, Fela all of Joliet, Illinois; niece, Gregoria Garcia of Texas City; nephew, Julio Garcia of Texas City; numerous other nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of loving friends.
Pallbearers will be members of the family.

Jeffrey Matthew Elder
GALVESTON — Jeffrey Matthew Elder, 41, died Friday, July 18, of a heart attack at his residence in Galveston. He was born September1, 1961, in McAllen and attended McAllen schools.
He was preceded in death by his father; Joseph Elder, and his mother; Mary Elder. Jeff is survived by a daughter; Alyssa Anne Wilson of McAllen; three brothers, Steven Elder of San Antonio, Michael Elder of Galveston, and Brian Elder (Joanna) Elder of Dallas; one sister, LeaAnne Prather of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and six nieces and nephews, Alicyn Sirr, Katie Elder, Rebecca Elder, Tanya Prather, Preston Prather and Elizabeth Prather.
In 1989, Jeff’`s life turned around when he gave his heart and soul to the Lord. Despite chronic health problems, Jeff was a compassionate and jovial man who enjoyed fishing off the beaches of Galveston and serving as caretaker for an elderly neighbor.
Carnes Funeral Home in Galveston is handling cremation arrangements. A memorial service for Jeff is planned in August at the House of Isaiah in Dallas.

Latrese Elizabeth Thomas
GALVESTON – An angel descended upon us and before we knew it, she was gone. Latrese Elizabeth Thomas was born at UTMB on July 19, 2003, at 4:15 a.m. and passed gently back into God’s arms later that morning.
preceded in death by her grandmother Frances Reyna and her eldest sister, Monica "CoCo" Thomas, Latrese is survived by many who loved her and will miss her.
Those left to mourn her memory are her parents Tanya Thomas and Daris Thomas, Jr.; a sister Macanzie "Candy" Thomas; three brothers Marcus Thomas, Matthew Thomas and Jonathan Aaron Thomas. Also mourning her loss are her grandparents, Daris Thomas, Sr. and Geneva Thomas; three aunts; five uncles and a host of cousins and family members.
Visitation is set from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at J. Levy & Bro. Funeral Home, 21st and Broadway, with funeral services immediately following, with Reverend Robert Kunce officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview cemetery at 57th and Ave. T.
Latrese will be missed dearly and will live in our hearts forever.

Charlene N. Oshman
Charlene N. Oshman, 80, passed away July 20, 2003. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years Peter Oshman, D.D.S. of Galveston, Texas, and is survived by her daughter Jodel Oshman-Berry and her husband James N. Berry, and her son Geoffry Hillel Oshman and his partner Laurie McDonald.
Known for her beautiful smile and her positive outlook, she made friends easily with people from all walks of life and brought gaiety and happiness to all whose lives she touched. Charlene’s light shown brightly, even during her last hours. She passed from this life with grace and dignity.
For 35 years, Charlene worked closely with her husband as his dental assistant and office manager. She was a life member of the Eastern Star, and she loved playing bridge and mahjong. A singer as a young woman, she developed a life-long love of the theatre.
Graveside service is 1p.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2003, Beth Jacob cemetery, 61st and Ave. T, Galveston, Texas, Rabbi Steven Gross of Congregation Beth Israel, officiating. Vicenta Romero Farris
GALVESTON - Vicenta Romero Farris was born April 20, 1917, and departed this life to be with the Lord on July 20, 2003. She was born in Luling, Texas, however, she later relocated to Galveston, Texas. Mrs. Farris is preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Andrea Romero, her loving husband, Claude B. Farris and also one of her granddaughters, Annie Marie Cruz.
Mrs. Farris leaves behind many fond memories with her loving children and family, daughters, Annie G. Cruz of Galveston, Texas and Lena Trammell of Encieitas, California; her sons, Tony Romero, Sr. and wife, Patsy of Texas City, Texas and Herman Farris of Galveston, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many other loving family members.
Vicenta was a homemaker and loving wife and mother who enjoyed spending time in the company of family always. Perhaps one of her greatest past times was when she spent time in the company of her grandchildren. In her 86 years, she has lived life to its fullest and touched all those who loved her in a very special way. Vicenta passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones who will miss her very much and who look forward to the time when they will meet her again.
Funeral services for Mrs. Farris will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2003, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home, Galveston, with Fr. John Bok, O.F.M., Pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Galveston, officiating. Burial will follow services Thursday at Calvary cemetery, also in Galveston. Gathering for visitation will be held on Thursday morning at the funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday morning after 10 a.m.
Pallbearers will be Alfred V. Cruz, Jr., Greg Garza, Roy Cruz, Larry Cruz, David Cruz and Luis A. Romero.

SANTA FE, TEXAS – Richard Arlen (Dick) Eppley, 72, was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Dick joined the U. S. Navy in 1948, and served in the U. S. Coast Guard from January 1963, to May 1987, and retired with the rank of CWO4 at Coast Guard Group Galveston.
Memorial services will be held Friday, July 25, 2003, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of James Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Eppley; two daughters, Tammy Ealey and husband, Paul, and Patty Halsey; four sons, Kevin Eppley and wife, Susan, Michael Eppley and wife, Krista, Kelly Moorer, Troy Moorer and wife, Yvonne; brother, Charles Eppley; fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
