TEXAS CITY - Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 2, 2003, at 7 p.m. at the Barbour's Chapel Baptist Church, 801 Martin L. King, Texas City with Pastor James Brown, Sr., officiating.
Burial will be held Saturday, October 4, 2003, at noon in Oak Grove, Louisiana, with Minister Andre Howard, Sr., officiating.
Survivors include a brother William Bobby Starks of Lake Providence, Louisiana; daughters Dorthea Jones Wyatt of Texas City, Shelly Hampton, Betty Wilder of Detroit, Michigan, Londa Lewis of Los Angeles, California; sons Clifton Lewis III, of Dickinson, Jeffery Lewis of Houston; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a special friend Miss Dee Laws and a life time friend Mr. Aluster Sneed.

ALVIN - Long-time resident of Alvin, Texas she was born Olivia Lucille Madara, in Plainview, Texas on November 13, 1917. She passed away in Webster, Texas October 1, 2003, after a battle with lung cancer and congestive heart failure.
She is preceded in death, by her husband, Jesse James Hankamer; sister, Arleeta McClellen and her brother, Harold Madera.
She is survived by her brother, Roland C. Madara of Philadelphia; her children and their families: Jorge and Viqi Pagani Hankamer of Santa Cruz, California; Ted and Nancy Hankamer of Ft. Worth, Texas; Noel & Ginger Hankamer, Orville Hankamer, Wineva Hankamer all of Alvin, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday October 5, 2003, at the Froberg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday October 6, 2003, at First United Methodist Church, 611 West South Street, Alvin, Texas with Rev. Chappel Temple, Rev. Linda Snow and Rev. Dan Danheim officiating. Interment will follow in the Confederate cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Alvin Senior Center 216 West Sealey, Alvin, Texas.

LA MARQUE - Jack Cyrus Smith, Jr., 79, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2003, at his residence. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2003 at the Chapel of Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston, Texas. Georgia Mae Shepheard
DICKINSON - Georgia Mae Shepheard, 85, was born November 30, 1917, in Bryan, Texas to the union of Susie and Jack Conway. She went to be with the Lord on September 30, 2003, at Triumph East Hospital in Houston.
Ms. Shepheard lived in Dickinson, Texas with her daughter. Her parents, twin brother John Conway, sisters Hattie and Amy, brothers James, Joseph, A. J. and O.A. Conway preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children, daughter and son-in-law Rosie and Leroy Campbell of Dickinson; son and daughter-in-law Ike and Donna Lewis of Bryan; grandchildren Leroy (Tessa) Campbell of McAllen, Patricia Campbell of Kingsville, Matthew (Alice) Campbell of Mission, Marion Campbell of Webster, Ike Lewis, Jr. of Dallas, Anthony Green, Wesley Green, Megan Green, Tiffany Green of Bryan, Kevin Green of Los Angeles; sixteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

HITCHCOCK - Ella Elizabeth Napoli, 75, a resident of Hearthstone for the past year formerly of Hitchcock passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2003. She was born December 29, 1927, in Galveston to Melville and Lillian Shannon. Ella was of the Baptist Faith, enjoyed bingo, painting, gardening, cooking and her family.
Loving survivors include sons Leanord C. Freeman of Hitchcock and Richard L. Napoli, Sr. of Texas City; sisters Mary Thomas of Hitchcock, Lois Evarard of Houston and Hazel Boardman of Dallas; brothers Eugene Shannon of Houston and Arther Shannon of Fayetteville, North Carolina; grandchildren Mellissia Kelly and husband Glenn of Santa Fe, Kevin Blagrave of Texas City, Richard Napoli, Jr. and wife Katie of Rockport, Michelle Napoli of McAllister, Oklahoma, Melissia West of McAllister, Oklahoma, John David Freeman of Gainesville, Florida and Mathew Lynn Freeman of Gainesville, Florida; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and best friend Barbara Redding which was a great help to our mother.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, October 3, 2003, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2003, in the chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Richard Grisham officiating. Burial to follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Donald Edwin Carter, 38, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2003, in Malibu, California.
He is survived by his mother Emily Bonnette; brother Richard and Ronnie Hagler, James, Clifford and Douglas Carter; sisters Barbara Bloomfield, and Brenda Ayers.

1946-2003
GALVESTON - Due to illness, he departed this life on to another life on September 27, 2003, VA Hospital. He was born April 17, 1946, to Bernice Owens at UTMB Hospital in Galveston. He was the oldest of four children.
Darrell graduated from Central High School in Galveston with the class of 1964. He attended Prairie View University. While in college he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. He worked in various construction companies in the Galveston, Houston area. He also worked for Todd Shipyard and Lipton Tea Company.
He is preceded in death by his grandmother Norelia Owens; uncles Fred Owens and mother Bernice Miles Harris.
He leaves to cherish his memories his son Kevin Owens; sister June Norwood of La Marque; brother Terrell Williams, Larry Miles (Lovie Jewel) of Spring; nieces and nephews, Georgetta King of Houston, Curtis Duff of La Marque, Bernice Obilor (Titus) of Houston, Jon Norwood of La Marque, Crystal Norwood of Hitchcock, Sharmetta Miles of Houston, Kinnan Houston, Adrienne Miles and Rebecca Miles all of Spring; twelve great nieces and nephews along with other relatives, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 4, 2003, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Shiloh AME Church, 1310 Martin Luther King Blvd., in Galveston with a service to follow. Burial will be held on Monday, October 6, 2003, at the VA cemetery in Houston.

GALVESTON - Charles Avery Smith, Sr., 62, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2003, at his residence.

Charles was born April 2, 1941, in Morgan City, Louisiana, to Isaiah and Hanna Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Charles, Jr., brother, Patrick Smith.
He is survived by his longtime friend, Shirley; son, Michael Smith (Gwen); daughters, Lisa Wilson (Demetris), Amanda James (Joseph) and Sheronda Smith; sisters, Jeanette Palmer, Carolyn Green and Mickey Smith; five grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.
