James L. Williams, II
GALVESTON - James L. Williams, II, 71, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2003, at Gulf Health Care Center, Galveston.
He was born March 21, 1932, in Wilmington, North Carolina, however he has been a resident of Galveston Island and throughout the State of Texas for well over twenty years.
Mr. Williams was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and proudly served his country through the United States Air Force from 1948, to 1962.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Louise Williams of Baytown, his only daughter, Bonnie Louise Hawks and husband, Mitchell, also of Baytown, and his two sons, James L. Williams, III and wife, Deanna and Donald Williams and wife, Alice, both of Galveston. Sharing in his loss, also, are Mr. Williams’ nine loving grandchildren, his one great-grandchild, his brother, William Ray Williams and wife, Margie of Wilmington, North Carolina and also his lifelong friend, Bryan Lee. He will be greatly missed.
Mr. Williams’ family has honored his wish for cremation and will meet privately to remember and honor him.

Nettie Lee LaCaze Watkins
TEXAS CITY — Nettie Lee LaCaze Watkins, 75, of Texas City passed away Saturday, November 15, 2003, at her residence.
She was born June 26, 1928, in Sieper, Louisiana. Mrs. Watkins was a retired tax assessor for the La Marque Independent School District and a member of First Baptist Church, of La Marque, where she had been the church organist for 40 years. Mrs. Watkins was a graduate of the University of S.W. Louisiana, in Lafayette, Louisiana.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Luel Watkins and her parents, Jake and Lola LaCaze. Survivors include one sister, Willa Mae LaCaze, of DeRidder, Louisiana; two brothers and sisters-in-law, A.J. and Dorothy LaCaze, of DeRidder, Louisiana, Louis and Betty LaCaze, of Shreveport, Louisiana; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce Watkins, of La Marque, Larry and Jan Watkins, of Houston, Texas, Michael and Deborah Watkins, of La Marque, Texas; four grandchildren, Kim Watkins, Brad and wife, Heather Watkins, Karen Watkins and Trudy Watkins.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2003, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., at the James Crowder Funeral Home, La Marque. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 17, 2003, at The First Baptist Church, La Marque, with Rev. Grayson Glass, officiating.
Pallbearers will be Brad Watkins, Dr. John Cochrane, Jerry Harkreader, Clark Hall, Howard Helms, Ron Plackemeier. Honorary Pallbearer will be Dr. Elizabeth Schmalstieg.

Katie Napoli Helmond, 88, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2003, at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 16th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.
The funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 17th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, with Brother Dean Beard officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mt. Olivet Catholic cemetery in Dickinson.
Katie was born August 20, 1915, in Dickinson, Texas. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents, Minizone and Vinze Napoli; brother, Leon Napoli; and husband, Patrick Helmond.
She is survived by her son, Valery Hugh Bolton, Jr.; daughter, Katherine Helmond, of Los Angeles, California; and sister, Marie Krompota, of Crosby. Katie is also survived by four grandchildren, Steven and wife, Liz Bolton of San Leon; Gary Bolton and wife, Sandy, of Friendswood; Susan Emmite, of Dickinson; and Sandra Helpman of Pensacola, Florida; twelve great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Pallbearers will be brothers of the Kingdom Hall.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Steven Bolton and Gary Bolton.

GALVESTON — Joan Frenkel Golden, 65, passed away November 14, 2003, at John Sealy Hospital, in Galveston, Texas.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 17, 2003, at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston, Texas. Entombment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park, in Hitchcock, Texas. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, November 16, 2003, at the funeral home.
Joan was born February 17, 1938, to John and Beatrix Frenkel, in Galveston, Texas. She graduated from Ball High School with the Class of 1956. She attended Sam Houston State University, Stephens College of Colombia, Missouri and Baptist Memorial Hospital where she earned her degree in Medical Records Administration. She was employed as Medical Records Administrator at both St. Mary's Hospital and John Sealy Hospital. She was a member of The Junior League of Galveston, Galveston Historical Society and numerous other civic organizations in Galveston. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and was very proud to be a third generation B.O.I.
preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Robert Newton Mackey, Joan is survived by her husband of 21 years, Charles R. Golden, of Galveston; daughter, Nancy Evans Wahmhoff and husband, Andrew, of Houston; grandson, David John Wahmhoff, of Houston; sister, Florence Frenkel Mackey, of Houston; nieces, Marjorie Mackey Neeley, of Houston and Joan Mackey Thomas, of Atlanta, Georgia; step-sons, Robert Charles Golden, of Olympia, Washington, Rev. Thomas Wilson Golden and wife, Melanie, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grand step-sons, Jazz Golden, of Olympia and Daniel, Catherine and Chad Golden, all of Colorado Springs; caregivers, Penny Janke, Donna Ashworth and Sherry Branch, all of Galveston; numerous other relatives and friends.

GONZALES, TEXAS - Doris Elizabeth Fox Mellen, 85, of Gonzales, Texas, formerly of Castroville, Texas, passed away November 13, 2003, in San Antonio. Doris was born August 5, 1918, in Galveston, to the late Frances F. and Lucille D. Fox. Her husband, Roy J. Mellen and her sister, Marjorie Jean Casey, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Ronald Roy and Nancy Mellen, of Jacksonville, Alabama, Randle L. Mellen of San Antonio, Lu Ann and Dennis Hartnett, of San Antonio; sister Fran Spencer of Gonzales; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Monday, November 17, 2003, at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Angels at Forest Park Lawndale cemetery in Houston.

Betty Joe San Martino, 76, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2003, at her home.

Betty Joe was born December 3, 1926, in Galveston, Texas. She attended Ursuline Academy and worked as a clerk for American National Insurance Company until she retired in 1992, after 27 years of service. She volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital and Shriners Burns Hospital. Betty Joe was a former member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 880 and attended St. Patrick Catholic Church. She was a loving mother and friend, and she treasured her time with her grandchildren.
Betty Joe was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie San Martino; mother, Alleen Miller Bolton; father, Joseph C. Bolton; and stepfather, Valarie Bolton.
She is survived by her two daughters, Genia Conti and husband, George Quiroga; Karen Phelps and husband, R.B.; grandchildren, Melissa Evelt, Matthew Evelt, Sebastian Conti, III, and Josh Phelps; and very special and loving friends, Jakie DeVries and Dorothy Quiroga.
Pallbearers will be Sebastian Conti, III, Matthew Evelt, Josh Phelps, George Quiroga, R.B. Phelps, and Oswaldo Gutierrez.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence "Sonny" Miller, Jr. and Joe Barleman.
