Mary Elaine Gill Hendricks
LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA - Mary Elaine Gill Hendricks, 75, passed away on November 22, 2003, in Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. She was born on November 21, 1928, in Slagle, Louisiana, daughter of Mary Elizabeth "Mamie" Weeks Gill and Barney Abraham, Gill, Sr. Mary Elaine graduated from Leesville High School then moved to Galveston, Texas, where she graduated from the University of Houston. There she met and married
her husband, Johnie O’Neal Hendricks.
Mary was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for twenty-six years. She was a member of the Communications Workers of America Local #527, Telephone Pioneers of America, the Daughters of the Nile and a long time member and board Member of the Galveston TELCO Credit Union. She was also a member and Social Director of the Yum-Yum Sisters, a Christian Ladies’ fellowship Group. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Gillis. She was a past member of Potentate’s Lady of El Mina Shrine Temple in Galveston, Texas.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday November 24, 2003, from Johnson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Gillis. The Reverends Glenn George and Louis Magee will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Park East in Houston, Texas, with a graveside scripture service at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. November 25, 2003, Rev. Louis Magee officiating.
Her husband of fifty years, Johnie O’Neal Hendricks, two sisters, Mildred Magee and Gussie Dartez and brother, Milford Gill predeceased Mary Elaine.
She is survived by two brothers, Leroy Gill and his wife Jeanette, of Slagle, Louisiana and Barney A Gill and his wife, Joan, of Gillis, Louisiana, one sister, Billie Mock of Slagle, Louisiana; her mother-in-law, Emma Hendricks, two sisters-in-law, Jeannie Dunquez and her husband, Raymond, and Helen Hendricks, all of Galveston, Texas.
The following nephews and nieces, the "children of her heart" also survive Aunt Elaine. Nephews, Barney Kenneth Magee and Donnie Gill of Leesville, Lousiana, Woodrow Mock of Clear Lake, Texas and Louis Magee of Slagle, Lousiana. Nieces, Mary "Betty" Shives and Madolyn McCoy of Moss Bluff, Louisiana, Wilma Bennett, Bobbie dePerrodil and Jeri Burns of Slagle, Louisiana, Barbara Stanley of Leesville, Louisiana, Dannetta Asbury of Jacksonville, Florida, Billie Nell Hicks of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Melissa Henson of Edmond, Oklahoma, Mollie Ellis of Wichita, Kansas and Helena Aucorn of Galveston, Texas.
The family would like to extend a special note of thanks to Dr. R. Craig Broussard and Associates as well as the 7th and 8th floor staff at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital and Extended Care of Southwest Louisiana. For their gentleness, kindness and loving care that was extended to our loved one. You are all such a blessing to her and to us.

GALVESTON - Genevieve D. Ellis, 80, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at her residence.
Visitation will be held on today from 4-7 p.m. at E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary. A rosary will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, beginning 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. with Father Paul Banet, SSJ, Celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary cemetery.
Genevieve was born on November 26, 1922, in Galveston to the union of William and Evelyn Brown Ellis. She was a Central High School graduate of 1942, and also attended Samuel Huston College in Austin, Texas, where she received her Bachelor of Art. She began her career in education in the state of Mississippi and returned to Galveston to join the G. I. S. D., from which she retired from after twenty-eight years of service. She was a member of the Galveston Retired Teachers Assoc. and the Willing Workers Social and Charity Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sibling.
She is survived by her devoted nieces, Carolyn Smither of Galveston, Evelyn Mitchell of Beaumont, Texas; great niece, Shonie Washington of Dallas; great nephews, James Smithers, Jr., Marcus Smithers of Galveston, Edward Mitchell, III of Dallas and William Mitchell of Houston; other relatives and friends.

TEXAS CITY - Christina "Tina" Serrato, 62, loving wife, mother, daughter and grandmother born in Seguin, Texas in 1941, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 23, 2003.
On Tuesday, November 25, 2003, visitation will be held at Emken Linton Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2003, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Texas City. Burial will follow at Calvary cemetery in Galveston.
She was preceded in death by her parents Carlos and Eufracia Vega.
She is survived by her loving husband of forty-two years Robert; son Andrew and wife Elizabeth; grandchildren Michael Paul "Poppi" and Julia Maria Serrato. She is also survived by brothers Carlos and Victor Vega; sisters Ruth Hernandez and husband Gavino, Maria Vasquez from Mexico City, Mexico, Toni Sanchez and Helen Vega. She was a loving aunt and godmother to numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Tina was raised in Galveston, graduated from Dominican High School, received an Associates Degree from College of the Mainland and also attended The University of Houston at Clear Lake.
For the last eighty-five days, family and friends were witness to the incredible strength and bravery that the Lord bestowed on Tina during her courageous battle. A testament to her faith which never waivered during this time was the strength she provided to all who cared for her. She will forever be an inspiration to all who loved her. Her family and friends will always remember the delicious cakes and cookies she baked with love and the pleasure and enjoyment she had on her shopping excursions to surprise someone with that special gift.
Pallbearers will be Miguel Serrato Jr., Victor Vega, Raymond Flores Sr., Gilbert Garcia, Raymond Flores Jr., and Tony Fuentez III. Honorary Pallbearers are Senator Gonzalo Barrientos of Austin, Texas, Tony Fuentez Jr., and Joseph Barrientos.
Special thanks to Dr. Longmire, the medical personnel at Clear Lake Hospital and Cornerstone Hospital who were so sensitive to her needs and those of her family.

Mr. Lewis was born December 12, 1934, in Crockett, Texas to Velma Fobbs and Homer Lewis. He attended Lincoln High School in La Marque and was a 1953 graduate. He was employed with Labor Local #116 and retired as a Merchant Seaman.
He departed this earthly life Friday, November 21, 2003, at his home. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Regina Lewis, and his parents, Eddie and Velma Johnson.
Left to cherish his loving memories are his two daughters, Theresa Fields and Renita Lewis; son, Roy Lee Lewis Jr.; his sister, Oma Geene Cash; grandchildren, Larry Lewis, Tracie Lewis, Dorkesha Fields, Terrance Bennett Jr., Rickea Smith, Jessica Lewis and Reginald Green; a devoted ex-wife, Evelyn Lewis; and a host of great-grandchildren; and many, many friends.

GALVESTON - Mary Jeanette Overton, beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on November 24, 2003, at Gulf Health Care Center in Galveston, Texas. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a rosary at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, November 29, 2003, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1804 69th Street, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 7 p.m. This will be a memorial service as Mary Jeanette generously donated her body to medical science.
She was born on August 17, 1918, to Sarah McCullough and William Evan Thomas, II in Galveston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, William and George Thomas, and her sister, Sister Gabriel Thomas, OSU.
Mary Jeanette graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1936, as the Valedictorian of her class. Upon graduation, she went to Santa Rosa Hospital San Antonio, Texas, receiving her training as a Registered Nurse. Nursing was her passion and her life long profession until her retirement in 1977. She lived most of her life in Galveston and worked in various management positions at St. Mary's Hospital, John Sealy Hospital, and several convalescent homes. She also worked as the Head Nurse at Santa Rosa in San Antonio and as the Head Nurse at Mills Hospital in San Mateo, California before returning to Galveston. Mary Jeanette was a proud "BOI" and a dear friend to many. She will be remembered by her family for her devotion, wisdom, and charity to others.
She is survived by two daughters, Miriam Dell'Olio and husband Dcn. Sam of Galveston, Texas, and Ruth H. Oliver and husband, Frank of Austin; her brother Henry (Hank) Thomas; three grandsons, Richard Dell'Olio, Andrew Oliver, and Lt. William Oliver, a granddaughter-in-law, Sylvia Dell'Olio; two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Marcus Dell'Olio and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her dearest friend Gwyn Kahla.
Her family would like to take this opportunity to thank her physicians Dr. Karen Hansen and Dr. Michael O'Boyle and her care givers these past years, especially Jewel Crawford, Tara Carr-Hanks, Jana DeGrasse, Joyce Holmes, Jeanine McMurrin, Vickie Perez, Martha Roach, Sandra Smith, and Sallie Sosa.

Bertha Mae was born on September 11, 1920, in Melville, Louisiana to the union of Nathaniel, Sr. and Bessie Hickerson Ruben. She was a retired day care worker and member of the Live Oak church where she served on the Usher board, in the Choir and Mission Dept.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sons, Gerald and Will and brother, Eugene Ruben.
She is survived by her sons, Johnny Crockett, Jr., John Ruben; daughters, Bessie Caldwell (Clarence) all of Galveston, Emma Jordan, Linda Dixon both of Long Beach, California, Tessie Howard (Dr. Milton) of Texas City and Debbie Sutton (Dr. Wiley); twelve grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; brother, Nathaniel Ruben, Jr. of Chicago; sister, Ruth Hill of San Francisco; uncle, Wilson Robertson; aunts, Eileen Harris and Virginia Hurks; loving and devoted cousins, Eileen Randle, Brenda Walker and Ethel Mae Mitchell; devoted friends, Mildred Mackey and Sylvia Williams; host of other relatives and friends.
