Mary La Nell Woolverton
Graveside services for Mary La Nell Woolverton, 40, of Newton, formerly of Kilgore, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 in the Millville Cemetery in Rusk County with the Rev. David Hampton officiating.
Mrs. Woolverton died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 in Newton.
She was born March 8, 1962 in Zwolle. Mrs. Woolverton attended Kilgore public schools and graduated from Mansfield High School, she also attended Kilgore College and Stephen F. Austin University. Mrs. Woolverton worked as a bookkeeper.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Anne English; and her sister, Rebecca Hampton.
Survivors include her daughter, McKallea Ann of Newton; father, Tom Ray English of Henderson; sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and John Keith of Corpus Christi; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Everett and Neosho English of Longview, Jeff and Laura English of Oklahoma and Mike and Sue English of Mount Enterprise.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Donald Mitchell Meabon
Memorial services for Donald Mitchell Meabon, 87, of Kilgore will be 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at the Knowles Chapel at the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery.
Mr. Meabon died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at his home in Kilgore.
He was born Nov. 17, 1915 in Robison, Ill. the son of Grandin and Maude Meabon. Mr. Meabon was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of the class of 1937 at Texas A&M with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. While attending Texas A&M he also served as Captain of the Ross Volunteers. After graduation he worked for the Otis Pressure Control, Inc. from 1937 until 1941. He installed safety equipment in gas and oil wells, supervised and fought well fires and capped wild wells. Mr. Meabon was responsible for bringing Red Adair into the Otis Company in 1938. Mr. Meabon served in the United States Army during the European Theatre in WWII. He was stationed in Northern France, Rhineland, Normandy and Central Europe. During the Normandy invasion Mr. Meabon was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He was also the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and the EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars. After the war he returned to Kilgore and worked as an independent oil operator and later as a consulting petroleum engineer.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mildred Kemp Meabon of Kilgore; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann Meabon and Joe White of Kilgore; one granddaughter; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Cahterine McDonald of Wichita Falls and Mona and Joe Hunt of Wichita Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church or to Hospice of Longview.
OCTA LORENE LITTELL SLADEK
October 16, 1906 was a great day in Sipio, Indiana for Otto John (Tod) Littell and his wife Vonnie R. Harrod Littell because that was the birth date of their daughter, Octa Lorene Littell.
Octa's journey through a 96-year life span was enhanced by her marriage to Vladimir Joseph (Kipe) Sladek on May 15, 1926. To this 62-year union were added four surviving daughters and spouses: Barbara S. Dickerson, Kilgore, TX, Patsy S. and Glen Ardry, Overton, TX, Helen S. Williams, Moore, OK, and Louise S. and Jack Sportsman, Refugio, TX.
Ms. Sladek was a housewife that enjoyed designing and building her homes in different locales, quilting, sewing and reading; however, for a short period she was employed as a stenographer for Gulf Oil Company.
Mother passed away August 11, 2003 at the home of Patsy and Glen Ardry. She was a life-long Christian Scientist.
A private family Memorial Service is scheduled to honor a mother, a grandmother of 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren. She is survived by two nephews of whom she was very fond.
Preceding her in death were her husband, a grandson, a sister and a brother.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to charities of personal choice.
ANNIE TAYLOR NEWSOME
Funeral services for Annie Taylor Newsome, 70, of Kilgore will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003 at Harmony Pirtle Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlos Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in Harmony Pirtle Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Victory Funeral Services.
Annie Lee Taylor Newsome, known affectionately as “Ann,” was born March 18, 1933 to the parentage of Clifford and Effie Johnson Taylor. She departed this life on Aug. 11, 2003 at Hospice HomePlace of East Texas in Tyler.
At the age of eight years old, she became a member of Harmony Pirtle Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Fred Brown. Her love for her church resulted in current service as church secretary from 1963, president of Circle No. 2, assistant director of Vacation Bible School, chairperson of the Church Bulletin Board Committee, membership in the Ed and Georgia Jones Scholarship Committee and president of the Education and Cultural Enrichment Department where she was instrumental in organizing the church library and forming a choir known as the Harmonettes. She had previously served as a member of the choir, vice president of the Women’s Missionary Society, financial collector and organized fund-raisers.
She attended Kilgore Elementary public schools and graduated from Kilgore Colored High School in 1952. She received her bachelor’s degree in social science from Texas College in 1956 and her master’s of education from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1975. She completed additional work at East Texas State University, Prairie View A&M University, North Texas State University and University of Texas.
Upon graduation from college, she began her teaching career in 1957 at C.B. Dansby High School as a civics instructor. During her tenure that concluded with the closing of Dansby in 1970, she also taught social studies, Texas, American and world history. She later taught world history at Kilgore Junior High School and Maude Laird Middle School from 1970 until her retirement in 1994 after 37 years of service.
Professionally she was a member of Texas State Teachers Association, Classroom Teachers Association and the National Education Association. In 1993, she was selected for listing in Who’s Who Among American Teachers.
She was a longtime member of the Court of Calanthe Washington Court No. 124. For six years, she held the office of treasurer of the Kilgore Colored and C.B. Dansby High School Reunion group.
In 1953, she was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Gamma Epsilon Chapter at Texas College. As a charter member of the Marshall and Kilgore alumnae chapters, she served as president and her presidential service extended to the Longview Alumnae Chapter as well. This leadership led her to take part in regional and national conventions. Locally her shining moment came as she chaired the 2001 Black History Program at Kilgore College in the Charles K. Devall Center.
She shared 26 years of wedded bliss with Rudolph Newsome after nuptials on May 7, 1977.
She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lena Mae Jones; two brothers, L.C. “Preacher” Taylor and Daniel L. Taylor; and one niece, Vanessa Jones.
She is survived by her husband, Rudolph of Kilgore; one sister, Ruth Jones of Kilgore; one brother, Johnny B. Taylor of Fort Worth; and many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Public viewing will be from noon until 8 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at Victory Funeral Services.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will conduct Omega Omega Services at 8 p.m. at Victory Funeral Services.

JACK KENNETH WELLER JR.
Jack Kenneth Weller Jr., 70, was received by his Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 29, 2004. Mr. Weller passed away peacefully at the Life Care Center of Grandview, Mo., following complications of a stroke.
Mr. Weller was born in Muskogee, Okla., on Oct. 10, 1934. He moved to Kilgore as a child where he grew up attending the First Baptist Church, Kilgore schools, and became a Kilgore College graduate. He joined the U.S. Navy where he was stationed for two years in Whittier, Calif., then returned to complete his education at the University of Texas in Austin. Jack settled in Dallas where he raised his family and resided for many years before moving to Kansas City, Mo., where he eventually retired.
Mr. Weller was preceded in death by his father, Jack Kenneth Weller Sr., and his mother, Norma Nell Weller, both longtime residents of Kilgore.
He is survived by his brother, James Conway Weller of Little Rock, Ark.; son, Kenneth Nicholas Weller of Clinton, Ark.; daughters, Kara Noel Novell of Mt. Vernon, Kristina Nvonne Woodlief of Kilgore and Kym Nichole Weller of Hot Springs, Ark.; two nieces; and five grandsons and five granddaughters.
Cremation will be at the Mt. Moriah Crematory under the direction of the McGilley and George Funeral Home of Kansas City, Mo. Anyone wishing to send condolences may do so by contacting the funeral home.
JIMMY DALE MORGAN SR.
Funeral services for Jimmy Dale Morgan Sr., 54, of Kilgore will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2004 at the Lighthouse Church in Liberty City with the Rev. Jake Warmmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Old East Mountain Cemetery near Gilmer. Mr. Morgan passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, in Moab, Utah.
Jimmy Dale was born Sept. 21, 1950 in Longview, son of Jim and Vernice Morgan. He was a member of the Lighthouse Church in Liberty City. He was a tool pusher for Pioneer Drilling. Everyone who knew Jimmy Dale will miss him.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Morgan of Kilgore; daughter, Jenna Morgan of Kilgore; son, Jimmy Dale Morgan Jr. of Kilgore; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Jannet Lang and Sharon and David Patterson, all of East Mountain; one brother and sister-in-law, Rayford and Bridgett Morgan of East Mountian; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle, cousins and friends.
Mr. Morgan is preceded in death by his mother and two brothers, Jerry Glenn and Gary Don Morgan.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m.
JULIAN (J.D.) POTEET
Services for Julian (J.D.) Poteet, 85, of Kilgore were 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel of Kilgore. Burial was at 2 p.m. at the McDonald Cemetery in Paris. Mr. Poteet died Wednesday morning in Longview.
Pallbearers were Clint Clark, Roger Clark, Nolan Clark, Tom Warlick, Caleb Murphy and Rick Poteet.
He was born May 2, 1919 in Lamar County, the son of the late Luther and Luetishie Miles Poteet. He was in the United States Naval Air Force in WW II. Mr. Poteet lived in Lamar County before moving to Kilgore in 1945 where he attended Kilgore College. In 1946 he married Fannie Jo King. He was also a member of the Christian church in Paris.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Poteet; one brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Nelle Poteet of Paris; three children and their spouses, Mary and Joe Clark of Tatum, Pat and Bart Warlick of Athens and Dick and Dorothy Poteet of Kilgore; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Chester Poteet, Billy Poteet and Bobby Poteet; two sisters, Ailene Brooks and Carrielene Melton; and one great-grandson.

ROBERT WAYNE “BOB” SHELDON
Services for Robert Wayne “Bob” Sheldon, 63, of Kilgore were 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Wells officiating. Burial was in Danville Cemetery. Mr. Sheldon died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004 in Longview.
Pallbearers were James Sheldon, Clayton Sheldon, Mike Reeves, Carl Sheldon, Rob Sheldon and Ken Brock.
He was born in Kilgore June 7, 1941. Mr. Sheldon attended Kilgore public schools. He graduated from high school in Tillamook, Ore. Bob enlisted in the United States Army for eight and 1/2 years where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Sheldon went to work for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company “C&P,” which became Bell Atlantic and is now Verizon, where he retired in 1994 after 26 years. He moved to Liberty City in 1995 where he enjoyed golfing and yard work. Mr. Sheldon was a member of the Shallow Creek Country Club. He was a loving caring husband and father.
Mr. Sheldon is survived by his wife, Mildred “Hoppy” Sheldon of Liberty City; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. Jr. and Paula Sheldon of Mechanicsville, Maryland; a daughter, Robin Suzanne Sheldon of Liberty City; five brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Madelyn Sheldon of Kilgore, Carl and Barbara Sheldon of Kilgore, Richard and Edna Sheldon of Tacoma, Wash., Hugh and Claudette Sheldon of Longview, Wash., and John and Cathy Sheldon of Salem, Ore.; a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Steve Jackson of Port Orchard, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Obe and Gene Sheldon.

MELBA L. SCOTT
Funeral services for Melba L. Scott, 73, of Kilgore were 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Dennis Gilchrest officiating. Burial will follow in the Danville Cemetery. Miss Scott died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 in Tyler.
She was born Oct. 14, 1931 in Brownwood to William T. and Carrie Scott. Miss Scott was raised in the Brownwood area and moved to Kilgore in the early 1990’s. She was more than just a resident of the Gregg Home for the Aged. Miss Scott was the past president of the Resident Council. She loved making sure the other residents were cared for and felt welcome at Gregg Home. She took pride in her daily mail and newspaper distributions to the residents. The entire Gregg Home Family will miss Miss Scott.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Juanita Hendricks; and a brother, Ira Scott.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Clara Scott of College Station; nieces and nephews, Bill and Diane Hendricks of Carrolton, David and Patricia Hendricks of Dallas, J. Scott and Patricia Hendricks of Arlington, Mary Kay Hendricks of Houston, Gene Scott of College Station, Julie and Bill Stkins of Waller; and other loving family members.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005. The family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.

Funeral services for Annie Mae Jones, 90, of Tyler, formerly of Longview, were 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home in Longview with Rev. Lanny Bridges officiating. Interment followed in White Cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Ronny Bailey of Tyler, Dianne and Mac Lee of Kilgore; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, A.L. Hughes of Waco; sisters, Loma Gladney of Waco, Nell Walker of Longview, Mary Lou McPhearson of Mesquite, Elva Gladney of Oxnard, CA. and Jo Rodgers of Baytown.
