Sam Martin
TULIA - Funeral services for Sam G. Martin, 96, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wallace Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Wagner, pastor of Bible Baptist Temple in Amarillo, officiating.
Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home
Mr. Martin died Thursday, March 11, 1999, in Augusta Medical Center in Fisherville, Va.
He was born June 14, 1902 in Calvert and married
Martha Evelyn Green in 1934 in Tulia.
He was a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church in Fisherville and was an auto mechanic. He attended Calvert schools and worked for Hedgecoke Motor Co. in Amarillo and also was a reserve policeman in Amarillo. He moved to Alabama in 1996 and to Virginia in 1998.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Connie Perkins and Rita Taylor, both of Amarillo; a son, Don Martin of Waynesboro, Va; a sister, Ona Craft of Uvalde; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Jesse N. Masso
Funeral Mass for Jesse N. Masso, 88, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Alice Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim McCartney, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Lemons Funeral Home.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Lemons Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Masso died at 2:32 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 1999, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
He was born Oct. 1, 1910 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico and grew up there. In 1924, he traveled with his parents and two sisters back to Jerusalem, Palestine and graduated from Terra Santa Secondary School in Jerusalem in 1928.
He was involved in the dry goods business from an early age and later owned his own business, specializing in Australian lamb wool for knitting. He lost the business in 1948 during the Palestinian Civil War.
On Feb. 23, 1941, he married
Fernand Salomon in Jerusalem.
In 1952, due to the unresolved Arab-Israeli conflict and lack of jobs, he immigrated to Matamoros, Mexico with help from relatives. He established a shoe business which he sold in 1963 due to poor economic conditions.
At the urging or relatives in West Texas, Mr. Masso moved to Plainview in April of 1963 and established Masso´s Department Store. He retired from the business in 1975 but it continued under the management of his son and daughters.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Jacob of Plainview and Robert of Tampa, Fla.; four daughters, Jacquline, Georgette and Josephine Masso and Irma Shackelford, and her husband Larry, all of Plainview; two sisters, Wadia Masso of Beit-Jala, Israel and Eugene Shehadeh of Lubbock; and four grandchildren, Philip and Aaron Shackelford of Plainview and Eric and Stephen Masso of Lubbock.
A brother, Abraham Masso, and three sisters, Jamile Garib, Mary Imbarack and Hanne Zakka, are deceased.
The family suggests memorials to St. Alice Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 1114 Houston, Plainview 79071 or to the American Heart Association.
Ericka Jo Olivarez
AMARILLO - Prayer services for Ericka Jo Olivarez, one-month-old daughter of Jolene Olivarez, former Tulia resident, will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Tulia with the Rev. John Salazar-Jimenez, pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit, officiating.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Rose Hill cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel.
The child died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 1999, in Northwest Texas Hospital.
She was born Feb. 1, 1999 in Amarillo.
Survivors include her mother; her twin brother, Erick Scottie Olivarez of Amarillo; and her grandmother, Henrietta Olivarez of Amarillo.
Her grandfather, Antonio C. Olivarez, died May 15, 1987.
A.C. Reynolds
Funeral services for A.C. Reynolds, 71, are pending with Lemons Funeral Home.
Mr. Reynolds died at 11:54 p.m. Friday, March 12, 1999, in Covenant Hospital Lubbock.
He was born Dec. 11, 1927 in Bennington, Okla.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma, and three sisters.
Alvin R. Carthel
HOBBS, N.M. - Graveside services for Alvin R. Carthel, 84, former Lockney resident, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lockney cemetery with J Henderson, minister at 11th and Amarillo Church of Christ in Plainview, officiating.
Burial arrangements are by Griffin Funeral Home in Hobbs.
Mr. Carthel died Monday, July 19, 1999, in Lea Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 12, 1914, in Lockney, the son of the late Ross and Carrie Carthel. He grew up in the Cedar Hill community and attended schools in Cedar Hill and Lone Star. He worked as a carpenter, cowboy and several types of jobs. He loved horses.
His wife, Cecile Carthel, died June 28, 1999.
Survivors include a son, Wes Carthel of Hobbs; a brother, Les Carthel of Oklahoma; a sister, Bernice McCurdy of Plainview; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He has several cousins living in the Lockney area.
A daughter, Waunella Hall, died in 1997 and a brother, Bud Carthel, died in 1941.
Ivand I. Gonzalez
LUBBOCK - Memorial services are pending for Ivand Isiah Gonzalez, son of Michelle Lee Gonzalez and Roger Ray Luebanos, both of Lubbock, and grandson of Johnny and Gloria Gonzalez of Plainview.
The infant was stillborn Saturday, July 11, 1999, in University Medical Center.
Terry Watson
FLOYDADA - Graveside services for Terry Watson, 88, will be at 2 p.m. today in Floydada cemetery with the Rev. Ralph Jackson, pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial arrangements are by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home.
Mr. Watson died Friday, July 16, 1999, in Mangold Memorial Hospital in Lockney.
He was born Aug. 18, 1910, in Lewisville, Ark., the son of the late Leonard and Josephine Thomas Watson. He attended schools in Longview and worked for Park Florist in Floydada for many years. He also worked for Moore-Rose Funeral Home and the Floydada cemetery.
He had been a resident of Floyd County for more than 50 years. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Helen Norris Bagwell
SLATON - Funeral services for Helen Norris Bagwell, 63, of Buffalo Springs, will be at 2 p.m. today in Englunds Chapel with the Rev. Paul Jantze, pastor of Trinity Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park cemetery by Englunds Funeral Service.
Mrs. Bagwell died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
She was born Feb. 21, 1936, in Fort Worth and moved to Plainview at an early age. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1952 and attended Texas Tech University. She moved to Lubbock in 1972 and to Buffalo Springs Lake in 1976 from Lubbock. She was an insurance agent for New York Life and was co-owner of Byrd Sand & Gravel until her retirement.
She was a member of Buffalo Springs Lake Community Church, International Order of the Rainbow Girls and Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
On Aug. 3, 1973, she married
Max D. Bagwell in Littlefield.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Rick Bagwell of Lake Ransom Canyon; four daughters, Cloris Tiffin of Slaton, Terri Lee of Mt. Pleasant, Sherry Fleming of Frisco and Tammy McCain of Lubbock; and seven grandchildren.
