When she was 3, she moved to Abilene, Texas, where her father had a drug store, and her mother had a sandwich shop. Her grandfather, Arthur Hood, ran a dray line. Her aunts, Lorena and Oralena, were attending college at that time in Abilene. In 1929, at the request of Conrad Hilton, she moved with her parents to Plainview where her dad opened the Hilton Pharmacy. Though a child, she remembered the grand opening at the Plainview Hilton Hotel and various balls she was permitted to attend.

She attended Highland Elementary. She was a student of elocution and was in demand for church and secular activities as a speaker, having earned numerous awards. Graduating from Plainview High School in 1940, a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society, she went on to attend Wayland College, receiving an AA in 1942.

Because of World War II and other shortages of teachers, she began teaching K-4 at Prairieview. It was a one-room school with two teachers, a pump out front and two outhouses, one for boys and one for girls. For heating, there was a wood-burning stove that was her responsibility in the winter to “have going” so the school would be warm by the time the school day started.

During this time she took correspondence courses from West Texas State, living on campus and taking courses during the summer terms. She graduated from West Texas State at Canyon, Texas, in 1945 with a BA., majoring in history and English. She also received a comprehension teaching certificate from Texas which entitled her to teach K-12. During this time, she began teaching at Muleshoe High School and Plainview High School. Later, she worked at Wayland Baptist College for 13 years.

At West Texas State, she met a young cadet and through the war, kept up correspondence with him. On Dec. 5, 1945, at the First Baptist Church in Plainview, she married Lt. LeRoy Lewis “Durb” Durbin from Carson City, Mich. They moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where he attended the University of Michigan and she received a Michigan Teaching Certificate and taught in elementary grades.

In 1947, they moved back to Plainview where their only child, Nancy Lew, was born. During this period she was a mother, homemaker, Sunday school teacher, president of the Lakeside PTA (earning Life Membership in PTA), and was active in the local AAUW. A former member of the Baptist Church in Abilene, she remained a member at the First Baptist Church of Plainview until her death.

Durb continued to work in the active Air Force Reserves. She and their daughter went with him through the years to various Air Force bases for additional training.

She was a member of AAUW and a Life Member of Hale County Farm and Ranch Museum. She supported Lady Bird Johnson´s wild flower center, Llano Estacado Museum, Audubon Society, March of Dimes, American Lung Association, Arthritis Foundation, Smithsonian Institution, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army and numerous other service organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. LeRoy L. Durbin; her parents, Joseph Marshall Greer and Aza Lee Hood Greer; her aunts, Mrs. B.S. (Oralena Hood) Ferrell and Mrs. M.S. (Lorena Hood) Davis; and an uncle, Ottis A. Hood. Also preceding her in death was her aunt, Oma Greer Morris.
