Thomas Shelby Smith
Funeral services for Thomas Shelby Smith, 47, relative of Athens residents, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston.
Mr. Smith died Sept. 6, 2002.
He was born Jan. 11, 1955, to Vance L. and Roberta Smith. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1980, with a bachelor of science degree in engineering physics, and was employed by Western Atlas/Baker Hughes.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Katharine Smith; son, Rowan Smith; parents, Delbert and Roberta Smith of Athens; sister, Becky Schieberle of Schertz; brothers, Vance E. Smith of Maurnelle, Ark., Robin Smith of Azle, and Shane Lewis of Rockwall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a trust fund for Rowan Smith at Klein Bank, 9720 Jones Road, Houston, TX 77065.
Bill Speake
Memorial services for Bill Speake of Austin, formerly of Athens, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Austin.
Mr. Speake died Aug. 27, 2002.
He was a former sports editor and managing editor of the Athens Daily Review. He worked on the staff beginning in 1953. He was a member of the Texas Sports Writers Association and was chairman of the Class AAA All-State Football Selection Committee for three years.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalie; son, Jeff Speake; daughters, Kathryn and Elizabeth; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Virginia R. Schnell
Services for Virginia R. Schnell, 87, of Chandler and formerly of Rolling Meadows, Ill., were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church of Tyler with Art Hill officiating.
Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 6, 2002. Arrangements are under the direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home of Chandler.
Mrs. Schnell died Jan. 29, 2002, in Tyler.
She was born June 10, 1914, in Chicago.
Mrs. Schnell lived in Chandler for three years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Tyler and Rolling Meadows, Ill. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Schnell; and parents, Adolph and Hannah Ekstrand.
Survivors include her son, Dennie Schnell of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Vic Massey of Chandler; sister, Leona Zander of St. Augustine, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church of Tyler and Hospice of East Texas.
Donnie L. Staples
Services for Donnie L. Staples, 71, of Athens are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. H.S. Ashford, R.L. White, Archie Hicks and Lafayette Herndon officiating.
Burial will follow at North Athens Cemetery under the direction of Garrett & Tuckers Funeral Directors of Athens.
Mrs. Staples died Jan. 26, 2002.
She was born Sept. 16, 1930, in Mineola to Much Parker and Rissie Walton.
Mrs. Staples was educated in Mineola Public Schools. She worked for Benham & Company and Collins Department Store of Mineola. She moved to Athens in 1959 and became a member of Mt. Providence Baptist Church. She was a child care provider.
Survivors include her husband, Eddie D. Staples of Athens; sons and daughter-in-law, Billy and Myra Walton of Dallas, Ricky Staples of Terrell and Rayfell Staples of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Darnetta and James Brookins of Athens; sister and brother-in-law, Vivian and Rufus Herndon Sr. of Longview; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be R. D. Johnson, Charlie Harris, Larry Houston, Keith Houston, Billy Jack Johnson and Sammy Lee Joe.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, David Walton, Jason Staples, Lonell Staples and Billy Walton Jr.
Family will receive friends from 9-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Carol D. Cummings

Terry Braly
Memorial services for Terry Braly, 43, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Braly died Friday morning, Jan. 15, 1999, in Tyler.
He was born July 6, 1955, in Dallas to Joe Leonard and Helen Ruth Furgerson Braly. He married Shirley Bruce on Oct. 14, 1978. A resident of Athens since 1984, he worked as a pressman for Digital Printing and Imaging Company in Tyler. Family was utmost important for him.
Mr. Braly is survived by his wife of 20 years, Shirley Braly of Athens; daughter, Christi Braly of Athens; father and stepmother, Joe and Billie Braly of Rockwall; stepfather, Ray Miller of Dallas; sister-in-law, Barbara Hudson of Athens; nephew, David Bruce of Trinidad; mother-in-law, Frances Bruce of Athens; and many loving friends.
Homer Miller
Services for Homer Miller, 84, of Gun Barrel City are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Eubank Memorial Chapel in Mabank with the Rev. Kenneth Hensley officiating.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Mabank under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.
Mr. Miller died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Rusk.
He was born Nov. 21, 1914, in Van Alstyne to George Franklin and Olive Frances Henson Miller. Formerly of Seagoville, he had lived in Gun Barrel City for 30 years and was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Mabank.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Olga Miller; daughters, Velma Arby of Dallas, Frances Waters of Balch Springs and Carol Hill of Rusk; brother, Hoyt Miller of Mesquite; sister, Lois Lawson of McKinney; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
James Boyd Hollaway Jr.
Graveside services with full military honors for James Boyd Hollaway Jr., 80, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens.
Mr. Hollaway died Aug. 4, 2003, in Athens.
He was born in Goose Creek to James Boyd and Myrtle Hollaway.
He was a resident of Athens for many years. He retired from the automobile sales business and recently attended First Assembly of God Church in Malakoff. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II in the 8th Special Naval (CB) Batallion in Alaska.
Mr. Hollaway was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his children, James "Jay" Boyd Hollaway III, A. Clifford Hollaway and Pamela J. Hollaway.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Assembly of God Church in Malakoff.
Gregory Neil Patterson Jr.
A graveside service has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday for Gregory Neil Patterson Jr., 14, of Eustace at Oaklawn Memorial Park of Athens with the Rev. Paul McKinney officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens.
Greg was born Jan. 1, 1989, in Flint, Mich., to Gregory Neil and Sandra Jean Jaska Patterson and passed away Aug. 3, 2003, in an Athens hospital. Greg had lived in Eustace the past six years, coming here from Florida. He attended Canton High School and loved the Canton Eagles football team.
Survivors include his father, Gregory Neil Patterson of Eustace; brother, David Patterson of Flint, Mich.; sisters, Melanie Sue Lowder of Millington, Mich., and Amanda Renae Tucker of DeBarry, Fla.; grandparents, Doreen and Lou Elenius of Eustace; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
