Jim Cherry Mason
Graveside services for Jim Cherry Mason, 83, of Dallas, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 28, in City Cemetery in Sulphur Springs.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 27, at West Oaks Funeral Home.
Mr. Mason died at 9:19 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007 after a lengthy illness.
Jim Cherry Mason was born Aug. 29, 1923, to Emma Gertrude Cherry and Charles David Mason and spent the first 7 years of his life in Union Parish, La.
He married his first wife, June Reddy Hill Mason. She died n 1954 after a long battle with colon cancer. In 1959, he married Clara Lee Sellers. She preceded him in death in 2001, after losing a battle with Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
After being educated in the Fort Worth public schools and graduating from Polytechnic High School, he attended North Texas Agricultural College.
Mr. Mason was an avid bowler and was noted for his best game of 290 and best series a 687. He was first introduced to bowling in 1942 while serving as a Civil Service employee at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
In 1948, he joined General Motors and served as a member of the United Auto Workers Local 816 until his death. Between 1948-1952, he served as the President of the Tarrant County Labor Counsel. He retired from General Motors in 1978. He was a member of Stockyard Lodge #1244 A.F. & A.M. in Fort Worth, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Hella Shrine Temple for more than 50 years. He also participated in the Knights Templar – A.C. Garrett #103, Council #118 R. & SM, and Chapter #451 RAM.
Survivors include his daughter, Diana Sue Mason, and his brother, Joe Mason.
Mr. Mason was also preceded in death by his parents and a stepson, Michal Caleb Hill.
Memorials may be made to the Mason Youth Bowling (MY Bowl) Endowed Scholarship at Alliance Bank in Sulphur Springs.

Charles Ray Courson
Funeral services for Charles Ray Courson, 74, a native of Pine Forest, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2007 at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Rhoades officiating.
Interment will take place in Pine Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at West Oaks Funeral Home.
Mr. Courson died Thursday, May 24, 2007.
Charles Ray Courson was born in Pine Forest, on Dec. 19, 1932, the son of Charlie and Clara Irby Courson.
He married Patricia Hargrave. She survives.
Mr. Courson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired after 34 years with Continental Emsco. His hobbies included gardening and other outdoor activities.
Other survivors include one daughter, Lisa Courson O’Neal; a son, Gary O’Neal; grandsons, Ryan O’Neal and Jared O’Neal; and one great-granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth.
Mr. Courson was also preceded in death by two brothers, Arlon and Leldon.

Leon ‘Sam’ Thomas
Funeral services for Leon “Sam” Thomas, 89, of Sulphur Springs, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007 in Mitchell Chapel Church of God in Christ with Supt. Nelson Gatlin officiating.
Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Mr. Thomas’ grandsons serving as pallbearers, and his nephews and cousins serving as honorary pallbearers.
No formal wake will be held.
Mr. Thomas died Monday, May 21, 2007 at Sulphur Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 24, 1917, in the Pleasant Hill community, the son of Ivory Thomas and Dollie Colors Thomas.
He married Lou J. Henley in 1979 in Sulphur Springs. She survives.
Mr. Thomas was a retired employee of Wingo Feed Co. He was a longtime member of the Mitchell Chapel Church of God in Christ. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the United Sates Army. In honor of his military service, the Hopkins County Military Coalition will conduct military burial rites.
Other survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, David Thomas, and Jimmie J. and Sue Gordon, all of Sulphur Springs, and Don R. Thomas of Dallas; three daughters, Patricia Gordon, Gail Washington and Sharon Thomas; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Carl Thomas Sr., and Ivory and Francis Thomas, all of Sulphur Springs; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Harvey J. Clayton; two daughters, Larnita Hale and Rose M. Thomas; seven brothers, Roosevelt Thomas, Lawrence Thomas, Johnnie Thomas, Euless Thomas, Gus Thomas, Jessie Thomas, infant brother, W. A. Thomas; two sisters, Leola Thomas and Rosie Wright; and two grandchildren.
Tapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Oda Roberts Moore
Funeral services for Oda Roberts Moore, 100, of Dallas, formerly of Sulphur Springs, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2007 in Tapp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Fred W. Lewis and Oti Marsden officiating.
Burial will be in City Cemetery with Claye Moore, Curtis Hoffman, Thomas Hoffman, Bret Maloney, Mark Miller and Wade Johnston serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3l, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Moore died Wednesday at Ashley Court at Turtle Creek in Dallas.
Oda Roberts Moore was born July 22, 1906, in Mount Vernon, to Charlie Fredrick and Samantha Young Beauchamp Roberts; they moved to Red River County with her family on Aug. 22, 1926.
She married Weldon Moore in Clarksville. Mr. Moore preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1992, after 66 years of marriage.
She earned her bachelor's degree in education from Hardin Simmons University and also attended North Texas State College. She was a retired first grade schoolteacher. She taught in Mitchell County schools for 22 years and retired from Colorado City, Texas, public schools in 1965. She was a member of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association.
Mrs. Moore became a resident of Sulphur Springs in 1968. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Rebekah Sunday School class, before moving to Dallas for health reasons.
She celebrated her 100th birthday in 2006 among family and friends from various Texas and Arizona communities.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Claye Moore of Arlington; one daughter, Sue Moore of Dallas; four grandchildren, Rhonda Hoffman and Pamela Davis of Carrollton, Claye Moore of Mansfield and Autumn Maloney of Flower Mound; five great-grandchildren, Emily, Thomas and Amanda Hoffman, and Erin and Ashley Moore; two sisters, Usteon Caldwell of Phoenix, Ariz., and Irene Brown of Stanton.

James Sarratt, Sr.
Graveside services for James Sarratt, Sr. of Fort Worth, formerly of Sulphur Springs, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Nelta Cemetery with the Rev. B.J. Teer officiating.
There will be no formal visitation.
He was born on Sept. 27, 1938, in Sulphur Springs, to James Weldon and Nora Mae Wilcher Sarratt.
He married Shirley Joan Stone. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Sarratt served in the U.S. Army. He was a builder and a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include three sons, James Ben Sarratt, Jr. of Mesquite, Bobby Sarratt of Dallas and Don Christopher Sarratt of Royse City; two daughters, Cynthia Simmons of Dallas, and Laura Mae Bewley of Haltom City; three brothers; seven sisters; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Bowers
Funeral services for Gerald Bowers of Sulphur Springs, are pending with Tapp Funeral Home.
Mr. Bowers died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Green Acres Nursing Home in Emory.

Harvey W. Morris
Memorial services for Harvey W. Morris, 75, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007 in Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel.
There will be no formal visitation, but friends and relatives may express condolences to the Morris family at noon after the service.
Mr. Morris died at 10:38 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2007 at Spring Branch Medical Center in Houston.

Nell Taylor Jones
A private service and burial for Nell Taylor Jones was held in Union Cemetery in Union.
Mrs. Jones died Wednesday, May 30, 2007.
Nell Taylor Jones was born the daughter of Willie Martin Taylor and Esther Connor Taylor.
She married Omar L. Jones on April 5, 1942. He preceded her in death in 2002.
Mrs. Jones was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her two sons, Larry Paul Jones and Jontaylor Jones.

Virgil Milburn "Mil" Searls
Virgil Milburn "Mil" Searls, 88, until recently, a resident of Tampa, FL, died July 1, 2007 at the Prescott House Nursing Home, North Andover, MA.
Mil was born in Tira, Texas, in 1919 to the late Arthur and Lillian (Adams) Searls of Sulphur Springs.
Mil was the son of a sharecropper, grew up on a farm and graduated from East Texas State Teachers College with honors in 1939.
He joined the Navy in 1940 as an aviator and served during World War II in the South Atlantic.
While in the Navy, Mil met the love of his life, Evelyn, in Dallas, Texas in 1942. They were married in 1943 and remained married until Evelyn's death in 2006.
Mil joined Pan American Airways in 1946 and stayed with Pan Am as a pilot, before retiring with the rank of Captain in 1979.
Evelyn and Mil raised a family of four children in Miami Springs, FL from 1948 - 1971. From 1971 to 1974, they lived in Berlin, Germany, then Evelyn moved to Tampa to teach at the University of South Florida as a Professor of Reading. Evelyn and Mil commuted between dual residences in Tampa and Berlin until Mil retired from Pan Am, when they moved to Tampa.
Mil was active in the Methodist church for most of his life. Mil loved to travel with his family and after his retirement, he and Evelyn traveled extensively overseas and across the US in their RV, Camelot.
Mil was also the editor of the Florida Reading Quarterly during many of those years.
In recent years, Evelyn and Mil spent their time visiting their children and spent summers in Breckenridge, Colorado. Mil was a loving husband and a caring father. His steadfast and constant devotion to Evelyn was an inspiration to all. He and Evelyn were always generous to friends and neighbors in need. He put his children through college, and he and Evelyn were always ready to help out when their children and grandchildren needed it.
Mil is survived by his son Ronald Searls (Lore Nielsen) and family Bryan, Kelly, Annalise and Devin, daughter Karen Searls (Michael Elliott) and sons, Randy Searls (Lori) and family Justin and Brandon and Kirk Searls (Lisa) and family Reid and Sarah.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be private. Condolences may be sent to the Searls family at 225 Old Cart Way, North Andover, MA 01845.
Memorials in Mil's honor may be sent to the Searls/Pfost Endowed Scholarship Fund, Office of Development, College of Education, USF, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., EDU163, Taqmpa, FL 33620 or to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Ave., 6th floor New York, NY.
Funeral arrangments are under the direction of the Dewhirst and Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third Street, North Andover, MA 01845.

Gertie Thompson
Funeral arrangements for Gertie Thompson, 69, of Houston, are pending with Mason & Mason Mortuary.
Mrs. Thompson died Monday, July 2, 2007.

Karen Bryant
Funeral arrangements for Karen Bryant of Cumby, are pending with Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Ms. Bryant died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at her residence.
