Kenneth Vernard Gillespie
Funeral services were Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 11:00 AM in Bold Pilgrim Baptist Church, Kaufman, Texas, with Rev. James M. Smith, Pastor and Rev. Leonard Jackson, Eulogist officiating. Interment was in Council Garden in Kaufman Cemetery.
Kenneth Vernard Gillespie was born August 19, 1959 in Terrell, TX, to the parentage of Frankie Parker Gillespie and Cleo Gillespie; both preceded him in death. Keith grew up in Kaufman, and Sulphur Springs, where his mother taught school.
He graduated from Kaufman High School in 1977, attended Trinity Valley College in Athens, and Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He later joined the U.S. Navy and served three years.
Keith leaves to cherish his memories one brother, Vendell Adrain Gillespie; three sons, Corey Scott, Kaufman, Texas, Keone Williams, Terrell, Texas, and Jordan Gillespie, Gig Harbor, WA; two daughters, Michelle Gillespie, Wills Point, Texas and Jessica Gillespie, Kaufman; two grandchildren; three aunts, Juanita Smith, Kaufman, Erma Fletcher and Robbie Morrow, Dallas, Texas; special cousins, The Jackson and Morrow Families; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Dr. Booker Taliaferro Lewis, Sr.
Funeral services for Dr. Booker Taliaferro Lewis, Sr., 73, of Fresno, Calif., a native of Sulphur Springs, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at St. Rest Church in Fresno, with Pastor E.E. Stafford officiating.
Interment was in Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno with Tom Hall, Booker T. Lewis, III, Anthony McCoy, James Hannah, Kirby Mathershed and Tim Medlock serving as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were Anthony Anderson, the Rev. Vernon Clayton, the Rev. Rodney Croom, Troy Hannah, J.C. Mayfield, Charles Morse, Clinton Banks, Jr., Stonne Cooper, James Earls, Loyd Lewis, Roosevelt Moore and Bobby Thorne.
Dr. Lewis died June 29, 2004 in Fresno, Calif.
He was born on July 25, 1930, in Sulphur Springs, to Chester and Josie Bell Lewis. He married Betty Jean Carlock. She survives.
Dr. Lewis was pastor of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, which he, along with a group of ministry supporters, organized in 1979, and where he spent the majority of his years in the ministry.
He was also involved in the California United State Baptist Convention, where he served as official recording secretary.
He pastored at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Fresno in 1976.
He received his Doctor of Divinity from Inter-Baptist Theological Center in Houston on Feb. 12, 1968.
He pastored at New Hope Baptist Church in 1957, where he pastored for 20 years.
He was a member of North Caney Baptist Church. He later moved to Dallas, and became a member of Munger Avenue Baptist Church, where he accepted the call into the ministry.
He attended North Caney Public School and Douglas High School in Sulphur Springs, where he participated in debate and public speaking. After graduating high school, he attended Texas Southern University to be an attorney, but entered the ministry instead.
Other survivors include three sons, Booker Taliaferro Lewis II and Mark James Lewis, both of Fresno, and Martin Luther King Lewis of Dallas; two daughters, Deborah Jean Lewis Marius of Fresno and Mary Elizabeth Lewis of Camarillo, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Shamika Tayawn Lewis, Booker Taliaferro Lewis III, Shanise Lashaa' Lewis, DeAndré Marquis Lewis, Danyelle Elizabeth Lewis, Stephen Griffin Marius II and Garratt Michael Marius; one great-grandchild, Ashton Saé veon Haney; four sisters, Cassie Clayton of Sulphur Springs, Loretta Murphy of Tyler, Eleanor Clay of Tyler and Ruth Scruggs of Dallas; and one brother, Loyd Lewis of Dallas.
Dr. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Jessie Mae Epting, Murdie Wright and Patsy Lewis; and five brothers, Herschel Lewis, Allen Ray Lewis, Chester Lewis, Henry Lewis and Samuel Lewis.
Dessie Parker
A graveside service for Dessie Parker, 79, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Hendersonville Memory Gardens in Hendersonville, Tenn., with Jim Tice officiating.
Mrs. Parker died at 6 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2004 at Woodhaven Nursing Home.
She was born on Oct. 31, 1924, in Russellville, Ala., to Luther and Mary Avery Henry Greenhill.
She married Leon J. Parker on Oct. 28, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio. He preceded her in death in 1983.
Mrs. Parker was a homemaker.
She was a member of League Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Wilt Parker of Sulphur Springs; one daughter, Patricia Raymond of Brunswick, Ohio; one sister, Mattie King of Tuscumbia, Ala.; and her grandchildren, Kevin Parker, Natalee Parker, Stephine Raymond, Makie Raymond and Heather Raymond.
Mrs. Parker was also preceded in death by two sisters, Rebia Posey and Lydia Mae Roush.
Melba Hale Bullard West
Graveside services for Melba Hale Bullard West, 78, of Beaumont, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Emory City Cemetery.
Mrs. West died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Memorial Herman Baptist Hospital of Beaumont.
She was born on Oct. 30, 1925, in Hunt County, to Thomas and Cora Hart Hale.
She married Bruce Bullard. He preceded her in death in 1988.
She then married Harlan West of Sulphur Springs, in 1990. He preceded her in death.
Melba Hale Bullard West was owner, along with her first husband, of B&B Foods in Emory.
She had been a resident of Emory.
She grew up and attended schools in Rains County.
She was a member of North End Baptist Church in Beaumont.
Survivors include one son, Marvin Bullard of Beaumont, one granddaughter, Kelly Bullard Wilson of Dallas; one grandson, John Seth Bullard of Beaumont; two great-grandsons, John Stackhouse Wilson, Jr. and Gray Birdwell Wilson, both of Dallas; one brother, Carson Jale of Rowlett; and three sisters, Stella Shipley of Greenville, Pauline Smith of Dallas, and Nina Phillips of Bedford.
Mrs. West was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Edith Kirby and Thelma Samples; and three brothers, Claude, Albert and John Hale.
Charlie Ray Isham
Funeral services for Charlie Ray Isham, 70, of Sulphur Springs, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004 at West Oaks Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Benny Dixon officiating.
Burial followed in Brigham Cemetery with Jeff Phillips, Gerald Gooding, Bill Deaton, Ed Wood, Jessie Smith and Gary Crow serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Isham died Friday, July 16, 2004 at Presbyterian Hospital in Greenville.
He was born in Campbell, on April 9, 1934, the son of John and Minnie Click Isham.
He married Patricia Wheatley in Campbell, on Nov. 5, 1953. She survives.
Mr. Isham retired from Lone Star Gas Co. after 23 years of service. He also was a driver for Sulphur Springs Ford.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Garland, the Lions Club and the Methodist church.
Other survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Scott and Debra Isham of Dike, and Kenneth John Isham of Sulphur Springs; one brother, Johnny G. Isham of Commerce; and three grandchildren, Blake, Brianna and Kyle Isham.
Mr. Isham was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Marshall Ray Isham in 1974.
Josie Lee Scott Kelly
Funeral services for Josie Lee Scott Kelly, 30, of Dallas, formerly of Sulphur Springs, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2004 at Arbala Road Church of Christ with Brother Frederick Weeks officiating.
Burial followed in Caney Cemetery in Pickton.
Miss Kelly died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was born on Feb. 26, 1974, in Pittsburg, the daughter of Frank and Thelma Kelly.
She attended Sulphur Springs Independent School District and was affiliated with the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her parents, Frank and Thelma Kelly of Sulphur Springs; two sons, Glenn and De'Angelo Kelly, both of Sulphur Springs; one daughter, Denise Kelly of Sulphur Springs; one brother, David Kelly of Sulphur Springs; and one sister, Tammy Kelly of Sulphur Springs.
Miss Kelly was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Lourece Rushin
Funeral services for Lourece Rushin, 78, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy Johnston officiating.
Interment followed at Brashear Cemetery with Mrs. Rushin's grandsons, Kyle Verner, Randy Rushin, Jay Rushin, Cody Rushin, Eric Urda, Joshua Willis and James Willis serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Rushin died at 7:08 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 7, 1926, in Mount Vernon, to Barney Sylvester and Ovelle Reeves McGraw.
She married Murrel John Rushin on April 4, 1942, in Mount Vernon. He survives.
Mrs. Rushin was a retired dairy farmer.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs.
Other survivors included two daughters, Wynona Willis and Martha Stokley, both of Sulphur Springs; three sons, Johnny Rushin and Mike Rushin, both of Sulphur Springs, and Donnis Rushin of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Wayne McGraw of Tyler; 11 grandchildren, Kyle Verner, Randy Rushin, Chris Tully, Jay Rushin, Randall Garrett, Eric Urda, Cody Rushin, Miranda Rushin, James Willis, Joshua Willis and Major Tom Willis; and three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Lovelady, Skylar Friddle and Kasey Friddle.
Mrs. Rushin was preceded in death by an infant son, and another son, Rodney Wayland Rushin.
Memorials may be made to Hopkins County Hospice.
J.B. Martin
A memorial service for J.B. Martin, 80, of Sulphur Springs, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Lake Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. David Smith officiating.
Mr. Martin died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004 at his residence.
He was born on Jan. 10, 1924, in Whiterock, to Thomas Clay and Serepta Alice Freeman.
He married Vera Lorene Byers on Jan. 1, 1951, in Tucumcari, N.M. She survives.
Mr. Martin was a retired boilermaker.
He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II and received a Purple Heart.
Other survivors include four daughters, Quinolyn Arceneaux, Nannette Owens, both of Houston, Gail Stokes of Sulphur Springs, and Sabrina Stubblefield of Goodman, Mo.; one son, Tony Martin of Amarillo; three brothers, Thomas Clay Martin Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Kenneth Martin of Lubbock, and Ralph Martin of Amarillo; one sister, Ella Mae Hnatek of Houston; grandchildren, Christina Lyles, Jessica Swenson, Jackie Owens, Toni Hilliard, Patrick Hilliard, Jacob Martin, Audrey Martin, Chris Bradford, Nick Bradford, Brandy Stubblefield and Brandon Stubblefield; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by one daughter, Paulette Martin; one son, Johnny Clay Martin; two brothers, James Martin and Calvin Martin; and one sister, Kathleen Cole.
Eva M. Hall
Funeral services for Eva M. Hall, 87, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Mitchell Chapel Church of God in Christ with Supt. Nelson Gatlin officiating.
Burial was in Stout Cemetery in Winnsboro.
Mrs. Hall died Friday, July 16, 2004 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 19, 1917, in Wood County, to Elix and Josie Rhoden.
She married Leonard Tom Hall. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hall was a domestic.
She was a lifelong resident of Texas.
She attended and graduated school in the Wood County Independent School District.
She was a member of Mitchell Chapel Church of God In Christ.
Survivors include one sister, Florene Thompson of Sulphur Springs.
Mrs. Hall was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and four sisters.
Dennis Jackson Brumley
Funeral services for Dennis Jackson Brumley, 89, of Pickton were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Beaty Funeral Home Chapel in Winnsboro with the Rev. Troy Hollingsworth and Bro. Billy Don Brumley officiating.
Interment was in Winterfield Cemetery in Hopkins County with Bo Allen, Steve Brumley, Kevin Brumley, Jeremy Sickles, J.J. Cummings, Brandon Gunn, Scott Brumley, Jared Brumley and Trey Watts serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Brumley died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at his residence.
He was born on July 27, 1914, in Pickton, to Jasper Jackson and Lula Savanna Powell Brumley.
He married Lois Newkirk in 1940. She survives.
Mr. Brumley was a retired dairy farmer.
He was a member of Winterfield Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World.
Other survivors include three sons, Gary Lynn Brumley and his wife, Lana, Mark Brumley and his wife, Patti, and Junior Brumley and his wife, June, all of Pickton; four daughters, Pam Brumley Allen and her husband, Rickie, and Hilda Brumley Cummings and her husband, Jimmy, all of Pickton, Judy Brumley Watts and her husband, Mike, of Sulphur Springs, and Sally Brumley Gunn and her husband, Ronnie, of Como; three brothers, John Willis Brumley of Princeton, Vernice Brumley and his wife, Emma Jo, and Willard Brumley and his wife, Bonnie, all of Pickton; two sisters, Ivy Renshaw and her husband, Kyle, of Sulphur Springs, and Stella Ramshay of Fort Worth; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Brumley was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, J.T. Brumley; and two sisters, Myrtle Brumley Sheer and Maud Mead.
