Doris Novell Harris
Funeral services for Doris Novell Posey Harris, 90, of Winnsboro, were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Beaty Funeral Home Chapel in Winnsboro, with the Rev. Charles Ethridge officiating.
Interment was in Harmony Cemetery in Hopkins County, with Mrs. Harris's grandsons serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Harris died Monday, July 19, 2004 in a Winnsboro nursing home.
She was born March 1, 1914, in Hopkins County, to Thomas Beckton and Elizabeth Charlton Posey.
She married Roy Harris on Jan. 2, 1971. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Harris was a retired sales clerk.
She was a member of Pine Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Lanier of Winnsboro, and Betty Lawson and her husband, Billy, of Sulphur Springs; one stepdaughter, Hilda Attaway of Rockwall; one stepson, Roy Harris of Austin; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Harris was also preceded in death by one son, James Leo "Sonny" Ross.
Lela Roland
Funeral services for Lela Roland, 73, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Morning Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. H.B. Nash Sr. officiating.
Burial followed at Mel Haven Cemetery with Danny Nash, Dameon Moore, Clifton Nash, Dennis Nash, the Rev. Donnie Thomas and Aubrey Nash serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the Deacons of Morning Chapel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Roland died Saturday, July 17, 2004 at her residence.
She was born on May 14, 1931, in Grenada, Miss., to Alex and Minnie Lee Williams Irving.
She married Tommie Lee Roland in September 1984 in Paris. He survives.
Mrs. Roland was a restaurant owner and cook. She received her degree in food service management from Paris Junior College.
She was a member of Morning Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, William Moore and Dennis Moore, both of Sulphur Springs, and Timothy Moore of Dallas; two daughters, Angela Stokes of Greenville, and Vanessa Kelly of Sulphur Springs; five stepchildren, Latonya Williams, Becky Roland and Eula Roland, all of Atlanta, Ga., and Marc Roland and Archie Roland, both of Dallas; two sisters, Ivy Stewart of New York, and Juline Stewart of Nashville, Tenn.; 28 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Roland was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters.
Dorothy Faye Sewell Bell
Funeral services for Dorothy Faye Sewell Bell, 76, of Federal Heights, Colo., formerly of Como, were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Tommy Hall officiating.
Interment followed at Como Cemetery with Fred Sifuentes, Aaron Sifuentes, Zach Sifuentes, Justin Bell, Randy Hopson, Sherry Sewell and David Sewell serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Bell died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at her residence.
She was born on Feb. 17, 1928, in Como, to Lester and Annie Bert Nance Sewell.
She married Donald Bell. He preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Bell was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Bell of Federal Heights, Colo., and Lisa Bell of Dallas; and six grandchildren, Aaron Sifuentes, Zach Sifuentes, Samantha Sifuentes, Justin Bell, Veronica Bell and Kurt Callaway.
Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Bell; one grandson, Ronald Holcomb; and four brothers.
Debra Kay Kizer
Funeral services for Debra Kay Kizer, 49, formerly of Saltillo, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Old Saltillo Methodist Church with Pete Hollingsworth officiating.
Burial was in Old Saltillo Cemetery.
Debra Kay Kizer died Monday, July 12, 2004 in Reno, Nev.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1954, in Hopkins County, to Mary Elizabeth Shelton and Bill Truman Johnston.
She married Eddie Kizer. He survives.
Survivors include her husband of Bonham; one son, Billy Wayne Hankins of Midland; two grandchildren, Trevor and Ashley Hankins; two brothers, Billy David Johnston of Winfield and Jessie Day of Reno, Nev.; two sisters, Jackie Frank of Balch Springs, and Carolyn Petzold of Eddy; and her stepfather, Robert Day of Reno, Nev.
Debra Kay Kizer was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Elizabeth Shelton Day; her father, Bill Truman Johnston; and grandparents, J.V. and Tommie Kay Shelton.
Jasper L. Temples
Funeral services for Jasper L. Temples, 86, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Tommy Hall officiating.
Interment followed in Shooks Chapel Cemetery with military graveside services accorded by Hopkins County Military Coalition and Bill Ingram, Chad Ingram, Tim Fosse, Jerry Fosse, Dave Ayers and Rusty Stogner serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Temples died at 7:06 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Nov. 11, 1917, in Sulphur Springs, to Lewis and Susie Harriss Temples.
He married Ovella Louise Wood on April 13, 1943, in New York City. She preceded him in death in 1992.
Mr. Temples was a lumberyard foreman for Wm. Cameron Lumber Company in Kermit and Midland, and Sandhill Lumber Company in Crane.
He was mayor of Crane from 1981 to 1983.
He graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1936. He joined the U.S. Navy in March 1937, and served until October 1945. He served in the North and South Atlantic and Mediterranean invasions and South Pacific Theater and was detailed to convoy duty in the North Atlantic, and attained the rank of chief gunner's mate. He saw duty aboard the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, the U.S.S. Bristol, the U.S.S. Yosemite and the U.S.S. Taylor.
He was a member of Lake Highlands Baptist Church. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1948.
Survivors include three daughters, Sherron Fosse of Livingston, Diana Ingram of Odessa and Janis Ayers of McAllen; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Temples was also preceded in death by one brother, Howard Temples; and one sister, Ethel Vermillion.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
John Clinton Wells
A memorial service for John Clinton Wells, age 37, of Dallas, was held at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 22, 2004, with Rev. David Smith officiating.
Mr. Wells passed away at 12:00 a.m., Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
He was born in Mesquite, on March 20, 1967, to Joe Frank and Donna Bass Wells. Mr. Wells was an event planner for the Embassy Suites for 14 years. He served in the United States Army.
Survivors include: his parents; partner, Chris Lindes of Dallas; brother, Joe Frank Wells, Jr. and wife, Misty of Alba; aunt, Florence Rink of Tyler; niece, Ashley Wells; nephews, Joshua Wells, Matthew Wells and Christopher Wells. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Christopher and Lorene Sewell Wells and Fletcher and Edna Bass.
Alma M. Sanders
A graveside service for Alma M. Sanders, 65, of Sulphur Springs, was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Jordan officiating.
Pallbearers were Jason Stewart, Michael Diamond, Toby Vance, Jackie Webb, Nolan Sanderson and Tim Roberts.
Ms. Sanders died on Monday, July 26, 2004 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on March 28, 1939, in Phillipsburg, N.J., to Albert Loyd and Mary Strauskulage Losey.
Ms. Sanders was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Loyd Dean Sanders and Ricky Bob Sanders, both of Sulphur Springs; one daughter, Janice Chester of Owls Head, N.Y.; one brother, Harry Losey of Cushion, Okla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Ms. Sanders was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald Jack Sanders and Michael Ray Sanders.
Harvey C. Whatley, Jr.
FT. WORTH - Harvey Carroll Whatley, Jr., 75, a certified public accountant with Stovall, Grandey, and Whatley, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2004.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Friday at Broadway Baptist Church.
Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park.
Harvey was born June 4, 1929, in Dallas. He attended Sulphur Springs High School, where he was president of the National Honor Society and Student Council. At age 17, he attended Baylor University and later graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University, receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration. While there, Harvey "Sonny" Whatley was a member of the prestigious Bison Glee Club under the director of Dr. Warren Angel. Harvey later attended Texas Christian University and was the first graduate to receive a master's degree in taxation.
He married Melba Laverne Franks in Fort Worth, Oct. 27, 1950.
Harvey was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, president of the Fort Worth Chapter of Certified Public Accountants, a member of the American Society of Certified Public Accountants and also served in the Korean War in the United States Air Force. His employment included working as a certified public accountant with Ernst and Ernst, The Baptist Radio and Television Commission and a partnership with Stovall, Grandey and Whatley.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey C. Whatley, Sr. and Sue Letta Whatley; his beloved first grandson, Clayton Phillip Whatley; and his grandparents, including Judge Silas Bullock.
Survivors: Wife, Melba Whatley; sons, Harvey Carroll Whatley, III of Fort Worth, Mark Whatley and wife, Jana of Fort Worth, Paul Whatley and wife, Anne of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandchildren, Blake Whatley, Alexandra Whatley, Harvey C. Whatley, IV and Matthew Whatley; aunt, Gertrude Rothell; and numerous extended family.
Lewis Paul Alford
Funeral services for Lewis Paul Alford, 92, of Pickton, were held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004 at Beaty Funeral Home Chapel in Winnsboro, with the Rev. Tom Buck officiating.
Burial was in Winterfield Cemetery in Hopkins County, with Mike Brumley, Danny Brumley, Ricky Brumley, Donnie Lucky, Kenneth Brumley and Jerry McFarlin serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Alford died on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in Denton.
He was born on April 23, 1912, in Lone Oak, to Benjamin and Belle Burns Alford.
He married Mary Carina. She preceded him in death in July 1992.
Mr. Alford retired from LTV in Grand Prairie, in 1977. He was a member of the Pickton Domino Hall group and Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue Alford Lucky of Denton; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Alford was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Pat Brumley in July 1984; three sisters, Annie Ray, Jewel Thomas and Lillie Spangler; and two brothers, Jim and B.J. Alford.
Gladys Parish Mills
Graveside funeral services for Gladys Parish Mills, age 83, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the Sulphur Springs City Cemetery with Tommy Johnston officiating.
Mrs. Mills died at 10:58 AM, Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Carriage House Manor.
Mrs. Mills was born December 12, 1920 in Sulphur Springs, Texas, the daughter of Archie Washington Parish and Mary Ann Dodd Parish. Mrs. Mills came from a large family which included eight loving brothers and sisters. She was a dedicated employee for Rockwell Mfg. Company and remained there until her retirement.
Mrs. Mills was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, where she and her husband Jasper, who was an active deacon, worked together in many capacities of the church. She also taught Sunday school in the children's department for many years and was an active WMU member. Mrs. Mills was able to travel quite often and found her favorite place to be Hawaii.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Clara Mills of Sulphur Springs, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Spencer Olesen of Grand Prairie, TX; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. She had 5 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jasper Mills in 1969; her daughter, Martha McKinley in 2004; her son-in-law, Lowell McKinley in 1998; and siblings, Hulen Parish, Verda Dixon, Homer Parish, V.L. Parish, Margie Kohler, Arvie B. Parish, Sallie Ann Parish and T..B. Parish.
