L.G. Dickson
L.G. Dickson was born in the Shirley Community, Hopkins County, Texas, on April 8, 1918, and died on January 26, 2005.
He was the son of Samuel B. and Thula Ann Thompson Dickson.
L.G. graduated from Sulphur Springs High School.
During his high school years, he was employed by Searles Shoe Shop in Sulphur Springs, as a salesman.
He also served as assistant manager of the J.C. Penney store in Eastland, Texas.
In 1941, as World War II began, L.G. enlisted in the Army Air Corps.
Shortly after his marriage to Helen Ratliff on November 26, 1942, L. G. left to serve the U.S. in England, and North Africa.
He completed his military career at Barksdale Field, Louisiana.
Upon completion of his military service, L.G. enrolled as a student at East Texas State College (now Texas A&M; University at Commerce).
He became involved with church, community, and business activities in the city.
His activities included organizing a Veterans Club, the Young Adult Sunday School Class (now the Dough Rollins Class) at First United Methodist Church in Commerce.
L.G. also served as Commander of Commerce's Bruce Williams American Legion Post No. 1 and was a founder of the Commerce Public Library.
He helped to acquire the land on which the present First United Methodist Church is located and served on the Building Committee for the present church building.
He was a member of Commerce Masonic Lodge and achieved the rank of 32nd Degree Mason.
L.G. was elected Mayor of Commerce, in 1952, the last Mayor elected by popular vote.
He was the youngest mayor at that time in the State of Texas.
He began the process that would transform Commerce's form of government from the Mayor/Commissioner system to that of City Manager/Council, which continues to this day.
Mr. H. O. Cowan recruited, hired, and trained L.G. as a loan officer at Commerce Federal Savings and Loan Association.
He became President of the Association in 1957, and remained in that position until his retirement from that organization.
He continued to operate Dickson Insurance Agency until his retirement from business.
Other civic duties include his dedicated service as President of the Commerce Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Commerce Housing Authority, and President of the Commerce Lions Club.
He recently received a distinguished service award for sixty years of service to the Masons.
L.G. received a Bible from the Ministerial Alliance with the inscription, "To L.G. Dickson as an expression of our appreciation for your Christian example as a public official."
L.G. Dickson has contributed greatly to Commerce, working to make it the thriving, successful community that it is today.
He has been an active member of First United Methodist Church of Commerce, for over fifty years, serving on almost every committee within the church.
His integrity, sense of fairness, and quiet contributions to his church, his city, and his family served as a legacy to all who pass through Commerce.
His contributions to the growth of the community can be seen in the numerous housing developments, churches, libraries, schools, and parks throughout the city. He was "Mr. Commerce."
L. G. Dickson is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen C. Dickson, two daughters, Lea Anne DeVega of Plano and Kathy Johns of Dallas; two grandsons, Daniel Joseph Edward DeVega and Christopher Dickson Garrett, one sister, Mandylene Moseley of Sulphur Springs, and a great number of cherished nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Commerce.
Burial was in Rosemound Cemetery in Commerce, with full military honors.
Serving as active pallbearers are: Bill Terrell, Kenneth Shaw, Jim Peek, Gary Kibler, Dennis Wilson, Clarence Jensen, Charlie Smith, Jack Ogle, Gene Leslie, and Lewis Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers include: Otha Spencer, Jim Kizer, J. O. Faires, George Robinson, Jack Gray, Ivory Moore, the Commerce Lions Club, the Commerce Masonic Lodge, the Dough Rollins Class of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce, and members of the Bruce Williams American Legion Post #1, Commerce.
The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to First United Methodist Church of Commerce, and to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Lois Grace Parsley age, 96, of Sulphur Bluff, were held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at the Sulphur Bluff Baptist Church with Rev. Cecil B. McLeod officiating.
Burial followed at the Sulphur Bluff Cemetery with Pete Bassham, Pee Wee Bassham, Jerry Bassham, Curtis Bernard, Roy Herman, Jr. and Darrell Deaton serving as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were Bruce Fielden and the Senior Sunday School class of Sulphur Bluff Baptist Church.
Mary Margaret Daniel
A graveside service for Mary Margaret Daniel, age 82, of Greenville, were held at Shady Grove Cemetery, at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 2, 2005, with Rev. David Burns officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were James Isham, Bryan Isham, Jeff Isham, Steve Blankenship, Cory Jacks and Dusty McQueen.

Graveside funeral services for Charles G. Thompson, Sr. age 74, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at DFW National Cemetery with Rev. Kent Jensen officiating.
Honorary Pallbearers are Charles G. Thompson, Jr., Roger Thompson, Chris G. Thompson, Curtis G. Thompson, and Jason E. Thompson, and Kevin R. Jensen.

Mary Alice Shrode
Mary Alice Shrode passed away on November 10, 2006, at the age of 78.
Born in the Pleasant Grove community of Hopkins County, to the proud parents of George W. and Blanche Tittle on October 28, 1928, she went on to graduate from Sulphur Springs High School and then Draughn’s Business College in Dallas.

Elizabeth Hess Snodgrass
Elizabeth Hess Snodgrass was born to a Titus County pioneer family in 1903.
Her parents were Sam T. Hess and Blanch Barrow Hess.
She survived her four siblings: Harry Hess, Thomas Hess, Faye Barber and Dell Hess.
Dolores M. Jones
Dolores M. Jones, age 85, of Sulphur Springs, died on November 19, 2006.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 22, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church.
A private interment will be held on Friday, November 24, at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.
