Mrs. Thomas Mickelsen "Peggy"
Jan. 9, 1925 - July 2, 2006
My mother. How blessed I feel for being born to such a wonderful, loving, supportive character whose spirit will live on into eternity. Her strength was evident on a daily basis and became particularly important in her last days. Mom is survived by me, her only child, Megan Mickelsen of Wimberley, TX and her devoted husband of 50 years, Tom Mickelsen of Port Neches, TX. She will be missed by older sister, Heloise "Koogie" Neu of The Woodlands, TX and younger brother, Russell Avant of Port Arthur, TX, plus a wonderful array of three subsequent generations of nieces and nephews. An elder sister, Carol "Chapel" Babin of Beaumont, TX preceded her in death and I feel certain is waiting at those pearly gates with open arms along with their mother, Grace "Gracie" Avant and father, Ira "Pop" Avant. Artistic throughout her life, mom's talent in oil painting was her forte' and we will cherish forever her every work of art. She was athletic and daring and even, as a stewardess for Eastern Airlines in 1946, survived a mid-air crash. She was on the dive team for the University of Texas and in her later years became quite active in a variety of local clubs. She was a member of The Service League, Garden Club, Gaiety Club, Bridge Clubs, Third Friday Club and numerous others. The last two months of her life mom graced us with her presence at our home in Wimberley and was looking forward to the completion of "her" wing of the house. Unfortunately, she did not live to see the finished product, but boy, did she enjoy supervising the progress. She enjoyed watching the numerous colorful birds at the feeders outside her windows. She held court at a family reunion only two weeks ago and enjoyed our litter of 8 Bouvier des Flandres puppies and small litter of 2 Norwich Terrier puppies. Mom was lovingly cared for in her last days, at home by me, Stacy Bass, Betty Bossio and wonderful teams of professionals from Wimberley Home Health and then Hope Hospice. She is now pain free and forever at peace and for that we are thankful. In lieu of flowers, mom would prefer a donation to the American Cancer Society. A casual memorial gathering will be held at 1605 Lone Man Mountain Road, Wimberley, TX 78676 on Saturday, July 8th from 2-5 PM. We invite all friends and family to come and join us in the celebration of her very special life.
