"Marty" Hunter
"Marty" Marcia Ann Hunter, daughter of Gertrude Hunter and the late Tom Hunter, born December 30, 1947, left this world on May 13, 2006 for her heavenly home. She accomplished much in her personal and professional life and influenced the lives of many children, church family, friends and family. Through athletics and band at Thomas Jefferson High School, Marty continued her education at Tyler Junior College on a trumpet scholarship and completed her degree at Stephen F. Austin State University with an emphasis on physical education. While teaching and coaching in Huntington, TX, Marty pursued and received her master of education degree in guidance and counseling. The next 32 years Marty lived in Cleveland, TX and worked in the Cleveland School District first as a teacher, coach, and counselor, and then as principal of Eastside School. Marty shared her lifelong musical talent with many along the way. As a gifted musician, who began piano at age 4, Marty never met an instrument she could not play, but her focus as an adult centered on the piano, the organ, and a bag full of harmonicas. For 17 years Marty served as organist at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in Cleveland. Marty infused her uplifting style of playing to every hymn enjoyed by the congregation. Recently, the congregation, led by Rev. Gene Marion, presented Marty a special coverlet decorated with outlines of "hands" and special messages from the church members. Rev. Marion also offered a special Liturgy for Blessing Hands for Marty. Presbyterians often lay hands on those they commission to special tasks. The hands over the coverlet signified the congregation's commission for Marty as she begins her new venture in her journey of faith.
As a professional educator, Marty was a dedicated and honored member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International the past 16 years. Through this organization and its wonderful members, Marty made many lifelong friends throughout Texas and in surrounding states.
Marty is survived by her mother, Gertrude Hunter; her "twin" Carrie McCullough; her many sisters of Delta Kappa Gamma, especially Catherine Davis and Nelda Clifton, friend, Nancy Fuller, and the children whose lives she touched, and her beloved animals, Lucille and Beau.
