Consuela Mendez Cadena
Port Arthur - Consuela Mendez Cadena, 85, of Port Arthur passed away on Friday, October 19, 2007, at Christus St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 22, 2007, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Port Arthur with Rev. T.R. Blanco officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Nederland. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Sunday, October 21, 2007, at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home in Port Arthur with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Consuelo was born December 25, 1921, Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico to Manuel Ramos Mendez and Micaela Salas-Alvarez. Consuelo was an organizer of LULAC in 1952 in Port Arthur #217 and Beaumont #235 area. She volunteered at Nutrition & Service Center for senior citizens. She won an award from LULAC #228 and also received honors from Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission. She was a member of the Mexican Heritage Society of Port Arthur. She worked at St. Mary Hospital as a housekeeper and had lived in the Port Arthur area for 66 years and attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Survivors are her daughters Edelmira Rhodes and Eloisa Cadena, sons Arthur Cadena, Gilbert Cadena and his wife Tina. Mrs. Cadena brothers Oscar Mendez, Raul Mendez and wife Amalia, Manuel Mendez, Guillermo Mendez and wife Micaela. Her sister Raquel Rodriguez and husband Amauri; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Cadena was preceded in death by her husband, Alberto Gomez Cadena; father, Manuel Ramos Mendez; mother, Micaela Salas Alvarez and brother, Mike Mendez.
Thomas Robert Lumpkin Jr.
T.R. was born in Buna, Texas, and spent most of his young years in Town Bluff, Texas. He moved with his family to Port Arthur, Texas in 1938, were he worked in the dirt business with a dragline and dump truck for many years before hiring on at Great Lakes Carbon. He retired from Great Lakes after 22 years there and upon retirement he and his wife, Nellie moved to Wimberly, Texas. They were members of the Baptist Church in Wimberly and the Lions Club. T.R. was also a Mason in the Wimberly Lodge. In 2002 he moved to Silsbee, Texas and became a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Silsbee. After hurricane Rita he moved to Gladewater, Texas to reside with Nellie in the Gladwater Nursing Home. He lived there until her death in July, 2007. As of August 1, 2007 he has lived at Cypress Glenn Nursing Home in Port Arthur, Texas.
He was an avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman. It was often said he was one of the best 42 domino players around. He and Nellie did quite a lot of traveling when he first retired. They had quite a zest for life, family, and friends.
Preceding him in death is his father Thomas Robert Lumpkin Sr., mother, Corrie Williford Lumpkin, sister, Lillian Lumpkin Fitzgerald, stepson, Larry Jernigan and wife of 47 years, Nellie Juneau Lumpkin.
Survivors are his sister, Joy Allen of Groves and Fay Adox of Beaumont; daughter, Cynthia Lumpkin Gontarek and her husband John of Groves; sons Larry Lumpkin and his wife Judy of Nederland, Tommy Lumpkin III and his wife Brenda of Houston, Mike Lumpkin and his wife Lisa of Groves; step-son, Gary Jernigan and his wife Vickie of Kilgore; grandchildren, Jeff Gontarek and his wife Debbie of Nederland, Julie Hebert and her husband Kevin of Groves, Joel Gontarek and his wife Kim of Port Arthur, Kim McDuffie and her husband Jeremy of Nederland, Lynn Lumpkin and his wife Kandi of Nederland, Kyle Lumpkin of Beaumont, Greg Lumpkin and his wife Monique of Beaumont; step-grandchildren, Blaine Jernigan and his wife Valerie of Henderson, and Jimmy Jernigan and his wife Tami of Friendswood, Jeffery Jernigan and his wife Melanie of Hallsville, Steven Jernigan and his wife Terri of Mississippi, Dana Pigg and her husband Gene of Florida, Lori Loiodice and her husband Tim of Kingwood. He had 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, October 21, 2007 at Broussard's in Nederland. Interment will follow at Pedigo Cemetery in Town Bluff, Texas. A gathering of family and friends will be 5:00 - 8:00 PM, Saturday at the mortuary.
Leola "Lee" Daigle
August 26, 1930 - October 18, 2007
Beloved, cherished, and special sister of Glenda, Don and Ida passed away in Weimar, TX. She brought joy and laughter to her family and to all who knew her. Her love was unconditional and knew no boundaries. Our world was and is a better place because she was here. May she rest in peace and the angels rejoice in having her in their midst.
Grave site memorial service will be held privately at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Port Arthur, TX.
Debbie Curby
Debbie Curby of Long Beach, CA passed away Friday, October 12, 2007.
A native of Port Arthur, Texas, she was a resident of California for 35 years and was employed by In-Home Services as a P.M. Provider.
A visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2007 with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m. at Gabriel Funeral Home with the Reverend Samuel Joseph officiating. Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
Debbie was preceded in death by her father, Charles Joseph Curby and nephew Chris White. She is survived by her mother Beulah Benjamin of Port Arthur, sisters; Barbara Semien and Cheryl White of Dallas, Texas, Carolyn Blackmon (Melvin) of Temecula, CA and Janet Dirden of Port Arthur, Texas; brothers Samuel Curby (Beverly) of Lynnwood, WA and Craig Curby (Ashley) of Port Arthur, Texas. Nephews Todd Semien, Brian White, Samuel Curby, Jr., Melvin Blackmon, Jr., Malen Blackmon, Rasheed and Gregory Curby and niece Ameerah. Uncles Albert Harris, Wesley Harris, Jr. (Lorraine), and Loston Harris (Armentia); special friend James Perry of Long Beach, CA and a host of relatives and friends.
Donna Estelle Hammonds
NEDERLAND - Donna Estelle Hammonds, 52, of Nederland, Texas passed away October 20, 2007. She was born October 11, 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas to the Donald Ernest and Betty Clay Huffman Vetter. She was a member of the Nederland Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Joe Hammonds of Nederland; daughter, Misty Lyday of China; step-daughter, Sonya Miller of Nederland; 2 step-sons, Justin and Arlie Hammonds, both of Nederland; brother, David Payne of Deer Park; and 9 grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Wednesday, October 24th at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Rev. Don Kain officiating.
John F. Davis
Port Arthur - John Davis, 63, of Port Arthur passed away Sunday Oct 21, 2007 at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas. John was born February 21, 1944 in Port Arthur to Claude and Jessie Davis. He was a lifelong resident of Port Arthur. John worked at Texaco and in later years was head of security at Lamar University of Port Arthur.
A gathering of friends and family will be Tuesday October 23, 2007 from 8-10 AM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home. There will be a graveside service at 10 AM at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
John is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Donna Elliott. He is survived by his wife Julie Davis of Port Arthur, daughters Jennifer Barroeta of Lumberton, Katherine Welch of Groves, the mother of his children Sandra Davis of Beaumont, Brother David Davis of Groves, sisters Joyce Evert of Groves, and Phyllis Lancon of Beaumont, three stepsons Luis Sherlinee Jr., Oscar Sherlinee, and Obed Sherlinee. John is also survived by his grandchildren Jada Belanger, Austin Taylor, and Judith, Michael, and Daniela Barroeta, three step grandchildren James Sherlinee, Megan Sherlinee, Luis Sherlinee III, Diego Sherlinee, and Rosa Elena Sherlinee.
Norman Lee Surette
Groves - Norman Lee Surette, 52, of Groves passed away Saturday October 20, 2007 at UTMB in Galveston. Norman was born October 16, 1955 in Port Arthur to Reginald and Mae Surette. He was a lifelong resident of the Mid county area. Norman was a hairdresser for more than 20 years. He was a member of the United Pentecostal Church of Bridge City. There will be a gathering of friends and family Tuesday October 23, 2007 from 12-2 PM at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 PM at the Clayton Thompson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Norman is preceded in death by his mother Mae Surette. He is survived by his father Reginald Surette of Groves, Brothers George Surrette of Port Arthur, Ronald Surette of Port Arthur, Robert Surette of Port Arthur, and Sister JoAnne Huffman of Port Arthur.
He is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.
