Ruth Guest

GROVES - Ruth Guest of Groves, Texas passed away on Friday, November 30, 2007 at her home surrounded by her loving family at the age of 67. She was born in Arnaudville, Louisiana on April 19, 1940 to Noeda Lanclos Robin and Gilbert Robin. She lived in the Port Arthur area before moving to Groves, where she has been a resident for over 36 years.
Ruth worked at the Fair Store, First Bank and Trust in Groves and Kentucky Fried Chicken. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Groves.
Visitation was held on Sunday, December 2, 2007 from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. with a rosary recited at 6 P.M. at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home. Funeral service was held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, December 3, 2007 in the Thompson Memorial Chapel at Clayton Thompson. Entombment followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Joshua Guest, Cody Guest, Ryan Guest, James Guest, Justin Castolenia and Brandon Castolenia.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Dolores Parsons and her brothers, Ray Robin and Anthony Robin as well as her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Wiley J. Guest of Groves, Texas, her four sons, Donald Ray Guest and his wife, Dayna of Lumberton, Texas, Ronald Joseph Guest and his wife, Charlene of Bridge City, Texas, David Lawrence Guest and his wife, Janelle of Groves, Texas, Robert Wayne Guest and his wife, Stephanie of Vidor, Texas.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Colby Guest, Shelby Guest, Ryan Guest, James Guest, Kristopher Guest, Kendra Guest, Joshua Guest, Cody Guest, Annie Castolenia, Jessica Castolenia, Justin Castolenia and Brandon Castolenia along with her sisters, Gertie Boullion of Groves, Texas, Versie Prudhomme of Opelousas, Louisiana, Mary Lena Cheek of Jacksonville, Florida, Janice Ray of Orangefield, Texas and her brothers, Allen Robin of Mauriceville, Texas and Leonard Robin of Groves, Texas as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

J.C. Burgess

NEDERLAND - J.C. Burgess, 86, of Nederland passed away Friday, November 30, 2007 at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont. He was born December 31, 1920 in Minerva, Texas to John Henry and Arnetta Burgess. He was a resident of the mid-county area for 57 years. He worked at Gulf Copper as a welder and DuPont as a warehouseman. He was a member of pipe fitters local #195.
J.C. was preceded in death by his wife, Alene Burgess; son, Robert Burgess; brothers, Emery, Grant (Red), and James Edward Burgess; sisters, Nora Mae Anderson, and Bette Jane Burgess.
He is survived by daughter, Sandra Clark of Memphis, TN; sons, Larry Burgess of Nederland, and Gary Burgess of Houston, Billie Ruth Turner of Mineral Wells. He is also survived by two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and his brother-in-law, Calvin Atkinson and wife Norma of Texas City.
There will be a private service at a later date.

Chester L. Getwood

PORT ARTHUR - Chester L. Getwood, 84, of Port Arthur, TX was called home to our Lord and Savior Sunday, December 9, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Trixie Smith-Getwood; brother, Wilbert Getwood; sisters, Malvola Getwood-Simmons, and Eva Getwood-Pickney; special cousins, Barbara A. King and Russell Getwood; parents, Sylvania Powell and James Getwood.
Mr. Getwood was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He retired from Texaco Oil Refinery with over 30 years of service where he served as a firefighter/paramedic. He was a veteran of WWII.
He is survived by one sister, Alberta Levine; three children, Rickey Getwood Sr. (Agnes), Jacqueline Breaux of New Orleans, Carol Dinkens; eight grandchildren, Rickey Getwood Jr. (Valencia), Erin E. Williams (Shawn) of New Orleans, Aundrea and Kimberly Dinkens, Lisa and Christina Getwood, and Adrienne and Johnene Breaux of New Orleans; four great-grandchildren, Rhaylen, Zachariah and Rickea Getwood and Cameron Williams of New Orleans; Beloved sister-in-law, Connie Wyatt and niece, Vickie Ballard both of Anaheim, CA; god-son, Jeffrey King (Monique); Special God-daughters, JoAnne Marshall, Carolyn Collins, Pamela Carrier, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Home going celebration will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 821 Texas Ave, Saturday, December 15, 2007. Visitation will be held from 12-2. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Presiding minister Rev. Patricia Wells. Interment will follow at Live Oak Mausoleum. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Hannah Funeral Home.

Effie Lee Sinnegar

Effie L. Sinnegar transcended from this earthly home to her eternal resting place on December 08, 2007, at Southeast Texas Medical Center. Effie was a life-long resident of Port Arthur, TX. She was a member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Youth Musician and a member of the Progressive Matrons Circle and Gospel Choir.
She was a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School. Her passion for children led her to Bishop College in Marshall, TX, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Effie later became an Elementary School Teacher within the PAISD, during those years of service, she helped to shape and mold the young minds of students at both George W. Carver and Booker T. Washington Schools. After retiring, she gained employment with National Surface Cleaning and C.A. Turner. She was also a proud and active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. from 1952-1992 until her health derailed her active lifestyle.
Effie was preceded in death by her parents, Effery A. Syers and Elena Syers and her sister, Marion Syers-Nelson.
She leaves to cherish her memory: 2 nephews, Earl Nelson, Jr., and Edwin Nelson; 2 nieces, Janice Nelson and Judy Nelson-Washington; 1 brother-in-law, Earl Nelson, Sr.; 3 great nephews, Damion, Kareem, and Daran Nelson; 1 great nieces, Eboni Nelson; 2 great-great niece and nephew, Davone Kiel, and E'Mani Kiel; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 1749 13th Street from 9am-11am. Services will be at 11am with Rev. Walter Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of Hannah Funeral Home.

Wendi Lynn Sawyer

VIDOR - Wendi Lynn Sawyer, 36, of Vidor passed away Sunday, December 16, 2007 at her residence in Vidor, surrounded by her family and friends after a lengthy illness. A native of Port Arthur, TX, she was a longtime resident of Vidor. Wendi attended Vidor High School and received her E.M.S. Certificate from Lee College in Baytown, TX. She was a longtime Paramedic in the Golden Triangle Area.
Funeral Services will be held at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor, with cremation to follow. Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at Memorial Funeral Home.
Wendi is preceded in death by her grandparents Dub and Lee Fountain. She is survived by her husband Tommy Sawyer and her son Andrew Sawyer, parents Mike and Dana Sykes, brother Mike "Mikie" Sykes, niece Haley Sykes all of Vidor, TX.

Wilma Dumas Newman

Wilma Dumas Newman was born to the union of the late Paul Dumas Sr and Louise Alexander Dumas in Lawtell, La., on January 15, 1943. She departed this life on December 4, 2007 at 10:17pm with her children by her side at Cypress Glen East Nursing Home in Port Arthur, TX.
She was a resident of Port Arthur TX for 44 years. She was a faithful member of Shilo Baptist Church.
She was employed at Park Place Hospital for 12 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Dumas Sr and Louise Dumas: one sister Johnnie Mae Boutte and one brother Alex Dumas and one nephew Alex Dumas Jr.
Wilma leaves to cherish her memory: One son Kevin Newman and wife Chantel of Groves TX, One daughter Jermel Newman of Port Arthur TX, two brothers Louis Dumas and wife Dorothy of Opelousas, LA, Paul Dumas Jr and wife Mary Alice of Huffman, TX, One Sister Ida Mae Henry of Anniston, AL. Four grand children: Ashley Calloway of San Diego CA, Evin Newman, Malik Newman, and Jasmine Newman all of Port Arthur and one great-granddaughter LonDavia Calloway of San Diego CA. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday December 15, 2007 at Christian Faith Baptist Church 1919 Jefferson Dr in Port Arthur with Reverend Albert Moses Jr Officiating. Viewing of the body starts at 9am Services start at 11am. Interment will be at Live Oak Cemetery.

Mary Theresa "Pie" Trotter

PORT ARTHUR - Mary Theresa Trotter, 65, of Port Arthur, Texas unexpectedly entered into eternal rest Saturday, December 8, 2007 at her home. She was born on July 6, 1942 in Crowley, LA to Vile A. Morris and Edna P. Morris. She was a resident of Port Arthur for 44 years.
Mary dedicated over 35 years working at the Port Arthur Country Club and Mid-Jeff Hospital. She was loved dearly by her husband, children, siblings, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary was a caring and giving person who adored people. She was a devout catholic and attended regular mast at St. James Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Vile Morris; mother, Edna P. Morris; sister, Hazel Drake; brother, Anthony Morris; and her grandson, Andrell DeJean.
Mary leaves her devoted husband, Rogers Trotter; four children and one step-son, Jonathan K. DeJean of Dallas, TX, Paul J. Collins, Crystal D. Smith and Chad A. Collins of Port Arthur, TX, and Clifford Collins Jr. of Chesapeake, VA; three sisters, Julia Broussard of Port Arthur, TX, Katherine Jackson of Crowley, LA and Theresa Broussard of Plaquemine, LA; seven grandchildren and two step grandchildren, Benicia D. Vaughn of Port Arthur, TX, Clifford Collins III and Brianna L. Collins of Chesapeake, VA, Keyera Collins of Oakland, CA, Christian Smith and Chad Smith of Port Arthur, TX, Imani DeJean of Dallas, TX, Isis Collins and Paris Collins of Port Arthur, TX; one son-in-law, Adrian Smith; and two daughter-in-laws, Cheryl Collins and Brenda Collins; two great-grandchildren, Daiven Miller and Denicia Miller; and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 14, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Gabriel Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday December 15, 2007 at Saint James Catholic Church in Port Arthur under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
