Eva Margaret Swearingen
June 25, 2008
Eva Margaret Swearingen, 91, passed away peacefully at her Roxton home June 24, 2008. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday June 27, 2008 at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Harvey Blackshear and Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Grove cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Margaret was born August 31, 1916, in Howland, Texas, the daughter of Fred and Eva Sanders Julian. She graduated from Roxton High School in 1933 and married Thomas Drew Swearingen in California on November 7, 1936. The couple later returned to Roxton where Drew and Margaret raised their daughter Kay.

Margaret and Drew have been familiar faces in Roxton for decades. Drew owned and operated the Mobil Station on the corner of Front Street and Honey Grove Street, and Margaret ran the home a couple of blocks away. Margaret was active as a volunteer at the school and taught the Methodist Youth Sunday School Class during the 1950’s. Margaret remained a life long member of Roxton Methodist Church.

Always noted as an expert seamstress, in her “retirement” years Margaret took up knitting. Not a child of friend or family has entered the world in the last 40 years without a blanket or sweater from Aunt Margaret to keep them warm. It was expected; she always delivered.

Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband Drew, her brothers Harold Julian, Kenneth “Dink” Julian, Buddy Julian, Jerry Julian, and sisters Lucille Cooper and Pauline Childers. She is survived by daughter Kay Akers, granddaughter Amanda Akers, grandson Mark Akers and his wife Kristy, sister, Pat Julian Harris, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Margaret loved Roxton. If there was a parade, a festival, any community event, she was the first to arrive and claim a front row seat. She was the Grand Marshal of the Roxton 2007 Christmas Parade, riding in the back of the city truck waving and throwing candy. Margaret’s special loves were her family, the Roxton café, and the Opry where she spent many friend-filled Saturday nights occupying her reserved seat, greeting everyone and even taking a turn or two on the dance floor.

The family would like to thank Margaret’s special friend and caregiver Faye Blackshear and her family for the care and love they gave her. Margaret has blessed us all, and she has been blessed by all the people who have been so good to visit her. We will miss her. When the moon is full, we’ll look up and wink, and we won’t be surprised if she and Drew wink back.

If desired, memorials may be made to the Roxton Methodist Church and the Roxton Opry.
