Carolyn Louise Dowd “Nanny” Golightly 64 of Forrest Chapel went to be with the Lord on Sunday July 20, 2008 at E.T.M.C. in Clarksville. She was born October 18, 1943 in Lamar County the daughter of Harvey Bee & Louise Viter “Franks” Dowd. She grew up in the Paris area being a waitress most of her life. She was a hardworking woman with a strong willpower. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Wednesday July 23, 2008 in the Fry-Gibbs Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mishayla Brewer and Rev. Mickey Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in the Chicota Presbyterian cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6 till 8 P.M. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Eddie Joe Wilkerson, her sister Dorothy Ausmus and stepsons Coye Heath & Thomas Golightly.

She is survived by her husband J.H. Junior Golightly; daughter Lisa Brown and husband Ronald; step-daughters Anna Jones and Pam “PK” Harris; stepson Doug Miller; daughter-in-law Donna Jo Babb and husband Jackie; Grandsons Eddie Pryor and wife Angie, Coy Nathan Pryor, Rusty Brown and wife Sarah, Colton, Heston, & Hayden Golightly, Brandon Whisenhunt and Jacob Jordan; granddaughters Tiana Reaves and husband Jared and Keely Wilkinson; great-granddaughters Natalee Wise, Hannah and Mallorie Brown; special niece Hollie Todd and husband Robert; nephews Harvey and Terry Miller; brothers and sisters-in-law Larry and Neda Golightly, Shug and Shirley Sessums, Earlene Cato, Shelia Golightly and Pat Reaves; numerous friends who will miss her dearly.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Todd, Joshua Todd, Randy Freeman, Gary Thompson, Billy Clark, and Danny Reaves. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Babb, Gene Miller and Paul Watson.

Col. Robert E. Lee Stell USAF Ret.

Col. Robert L. Stell USAF Ret. 92, of Waco, a Lamar County native passed away Friday July 18, 2008 in Waco.

Col. Stell was born on December 14, 1915 in Lamar County, Texas a son of James W. and Janie Hightower Stell. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois Oates Stell whom he married on January 1, 1942.

Col. Stell served in the United States Air Force for 22 years, veteran of World War II serving in the China, Burma, India Theatre (CBI). During his Air Force service and after retirement he worked for the United States Space Program in guided missile development. He was a part of the 7th Bomb (H) Historical Foundation and was inducted into the Paris Junior College Hall of Fame. Col. Stell was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Col Stell graduated from Paris Junior College, University of Texas, and earned a masters degree from Florida State University.

Surviving are his daughters Debbie Stell McAlister and husband Dane of Simi Valley, California, Jennifer Stell Frazier of Denver Colorado, and Susan Stell Smith of Waco; grandchildren Molly Gapol, Kelly McAlister, Nathan McAlister, Andrew Frazier, Bobby Smith, and Billy Smith; great granddaughter McKenna Gapol; sister Evelyn Stell Harris; brothers George (Buster) Stell and John Stell.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Fry-Gibbs Funeral Chapel Tuesday July 22, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. with Patrick Cannon officiating. Burial will follow at the Shady Grove cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Air Force Funeral Detail for Shepherd Air Force Base. In lieu of flowers if desired memorials maybe made to the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth Wade Hill, Sr.

Kenneth Wade Hill, 78 of Paris, passed away Friday, July 18, 2008 at Dubuis Hospital in Paris.

Services have been scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Lawlis, Bro. Ivie Powell and Bro. Marvin Weir officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.

He was born Bartlett, Texas to Herbert Wade and Vivian Jewel Gray Hill on March 22, 1930. He served in the United States Army and retired from Unisys Corp. as a Field Engineer. He married Barbara Ann Ivy on May 9, 1953 in Kemp, Texas. He was a member of the Bonham Street Church of Christ where he served as an elder.

He is survived by his wife; Barbara, children; Kenneth Wade Hill, Jr. of Dallas, Sharron Kay Keywood and husband Steve of Paris, grandchildren; Allen Wade Jones and wife Kelly of Mansfield, Russell Ben Jones of Paris and Robert Trent Jones of Houston, great-grandson; Ryan Henry Jones; brother-in-law; Ralph Ivy of Gunbarrel City, sister; Dorothy Day of Benbrook and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Herbert and Vivian Hill, brother; Donald Hill, in-laws; N.B. and Flora Ivy, brothers-in-law; Harold Ivy, Heather Ivy and James O. Day.

Pallbearers will be Tom Arnold, Steve Arnold, Randy Ballard, Hershell Ballard, Kenny Wood, Marx Offutt and David Ballard. Honorary Pallbearers will be Benny Lovell, Charlie Arnold, Robert Ballard, Dr. William G. Hayden and Dudley Zant.

James Paul Preston

Retired SFC James Paul “JP” Preston, 74 of Direct, Texas passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2008 at Wilson and Jones Hospital in Sherman after a lengthy illness.

A service has been scheduled with full Military Honors at Pyles cemetery on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.

James “JP” Preston was born on January 10, 1934 in Gould, Oklahoma to James Morgan Moree of Seymour, Texas and Johny Mae Alexander of Gould, Oklahoma and was later adopted by Dewey Preston of Paris, Texas.

He had an extensive military career serving both in the United States Navy and the United States Army. He served in Italy, Germany, Vietnam and Korea. James received various commendations; among them were Decorations for National Defense as well as two Korean Service Metals. James retired a Korean War Veteran as well as a Vietnam War Veteran. He shared a special relationship with his son-in-law, CW4, Black Hawk Pilot; Tom McClellan of Ozarka, Alabama.

James was the beloved husband of 11 years to Karin Ingrid Tamschick-Preston of Koenigsberg, West Germany and step father to Martina Anderson of Austin, Texas, Karin Ferguson of Paris, Texas, Patricia McClellan of Ozarka, Alabama, George Anderson of McKinney, Texas, Jane Joplin of Powderly, Texas and Cassandra Springer of Fairbanks, Alaska.

He was grandfather to Sean Paul Castrita, Amanda Kidd, Trent Tupin, Christian Springer, Cameron Springer, Jillian Anderson and Kaitlynn McClellan, Ashley McClellan and Kaitlynn McClellan.

JP’s siblings include, James T. Preston of Paris, D.J. Preston of Paris, Leroy Preston of Paris, Mae Burkett of Irving, Mary Vaughn of Paris, John Preston of Paris, Ann Lamb of Paris, Douglas Preston and Gloria Fitzpatrick of Paris.

The family will be gathering at the home of Jane Joplin in Powderly, Texas immediately following the services.

Michael Lee Bennett

Michael Lee Bennett, 53, of Paris went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Sunday July 13, 2008. Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home will conduct graveside services 11:00 a.m. Wednesday July 16, at Highland cemetery in Deport with Rev. Dverle Archer and Rev. Demp Greer officiating.

He was born June 3, 1955 in Dallas, Texas a son of Clyde and Wanda Rollins Bennett. He married Donna Rosson December 15, 1977 in Hugo, Oklahoma. He was a truck driver and a member of Highway Full Gospel Church where he was a board member.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; children, Crystal Bennett, Luke Bennett and wife, Debbie; grandchildren, Tierani Bryan, Skyler Bryan and James Laster; a brother, Col. Rick Bennett and wife Sonnie; sisters, Sharon Barnes, Carla Fletcher and husband, Dan and several nieces and nephews.

Susie Bee Horton

SUSIE BEE HORTON 92, of Waxahachie, formerly of Emory and Detroit, died at 6:43 PM, Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Renfro Healthcare Center in Waxahachie. A graveside service is set for 10:00 AM, Friday, July 18, 2008 at Detroit cemetery with Rev. Mike Fortenberry officiating. Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Horton was born January 28, 1916 in Detroit to Needham Alexander and Susie Phillips Whitley. She married Johnnie Martin Horton June 14, 1930 in Paris. He died December 28, 1989. She was a homemaker and member of the Holiness faith.

Mrs. Horton is survived by two sisters, Annie Nations of Paris and Betty Bryant of Earth, Texas; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant twins, Billy Wayne and Willie Jane Horton; a son, Jimmy Horton; a daughter, Bonnie Donelson; three brothers; and one sister; and her step-mother who raised her, Dora Whitley.

THEDA COTTON 81, of Paris, died at 4:25 AM, Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Spring Lake Assisted Living Center. Funeral services are set for 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 in the chapel of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Reger officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 PM, Monday evening at the funeral home. Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Cotton was born May 1, 1927 in Spencerville, Oklahoma to Thomas Richard and Callie Donaho Floyd. She graduated from Rattan High School. She was elected Lamar County Tax Assessor and Collector in 1984 retiring in 1989. She served as the church secretary for Mount Olive Baptist Church where she was a long-time member. Mrs. Cotton was also a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class at Mount Olive. Mrs. Cotton married Hal Cotton August 22, 1972 in Paris. He preceded her in death April 1, 1988.

Mrs. Cotton is survived by three children, Ronald Bates and wife, Peggy of Midlothian, Texas, Theresa Wimpee and husband, Rick of Rockwall, Texas, and Richard Bates and wife, Terri of Heath, Texas; six grandchildren, Jennifer Pitcock, Jim R. Bates, Cole Wimpee, Casey Wimpee, Katy Bates, and Kevin Bates; three step-grandchildren, Nick Wise, Frederick Wise, and Dustin Wise; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Bernice Floyd, Haskell Floyd, and Leo Floyd; and three sisters, Eula Bond, Lena Lloyd, and Trelma Rabon.

Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Shouse, Tiger Emerson, Mark Fendley, Glenn Williams, John Harwell, and Billy Risinger. Honorary pallbearers are Philip Risinger and John Preston.

J.C. McCann

J.C. McCann, 74 of Paris passed away July 12, 2008 in Paris Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McCann was born on December 30, 1933 in Gadston a son of John and Mellia Danner McCann. He was a member of Ben Franklin Community Church, served in the U.S. Air Force, and was a farmer. On April 19, 1958 he married Leona Spencer McCann in Paris, Texas.

Mr. McCann is survived by his wife Morinia Leona McCann; children Johnny McCann and wife Tina, Linnie Morvent and husband Gary, Leo McCann and wife Connie, Fay Harrell and husband Troy and Debbie McCann; 23 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren; brothers Leo Reves, Wayne McCann, Taft McCann, P.A. Reves; sisters Pauline Sellers and Louise Case. He was preceded in death by children Ethel McCann and Jacky McCann, Sr..

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday in the Fry-Gibbs Funeral Chapel with Rev. Al Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Georgia cemetery with Teto Saavedra, Cody McCann, Miguel Civrian, Zachary McCann, Troy Harrell, Marcus McCann, Rodney Crippin, and Jacky McCann, Jr.. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian McCann, John Cawvey, Chris McCann, Timothy McCann, and Jeremy Goree. Family will receive friends from 7 till 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
