George Edward Burnett

GEORGE EDWARD BURNETT 88, of Blossom, died at 12:35 AM, Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Paris Regional Medical Center. A graveside service is set for 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Knights of Honor cemetery with Rev. Kevin Moore officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until service time at the cemetery prior to the service. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Burnett was born in a farm house near Fulbright, Texas on March 14, 1921 the second son of John William “Bill” and Ida Lela Mary Self Burnett. Mr. Bill Burnett called George, “Judge” because of his solemn looks and behavior as an infant. That soon changed as George developed a feisty, head strong, energetic, curious, vocal personality. He believed life should be lived to the fullest.
George loved to tell stories about life along Goochic Creek and growing up in the woods around Fulbright. During these years he developed his knowledge, love and skill for hunting, fishing, riding horses, swimming and being a daredevil. Many people thought he would be an outlaw by age 21, but they were wrong.
Shortly after the Depression forced the family to move to Blossom, Texas, George met the love of his life, Carrie Odessa Martin; and they were married
on Christmas Eve of 1939. He often said Odessa was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. His feelings never changed and his love never faded for almost 70 years. George and Odessa toiled together to build a home, raise four children, save for the future, and to love and honor each other as promised so long ago. They succeeded beautifully.
After serving his country in World War II in the US Army Air Corp, George and his family set up housekeeping in Blossom. Soon, George’s independent nature and desire to “move on” pushed the family West. He loaded all their belongings in a truck and commanded his family to get on board. They relocated to Lubbock and Abernathy where for the next 67 years, George and Odessa remained. They recently returned to Blossom to be closer to family.
Over the course of his life, George was a pilot in World War II, avid bird hunter, farm and ranch manager, Sunday School Teacher, Father, business owner, Christian, equipment operator, mechanic, provider, friend, jokester, and daredevil.
He was preceded in death by his third child, Frances Ann “Sue” Burnett Holland; his parents; a brother, James Burnett; and a sister, Ann Black. Survivors include his wife, Odessa Burnett of Blossom; 3 children, Rita Burnett of Houston, Edd Burnett and wife, Sandra of Paris, and Debra Burnett Nies and husband, Mike of Bozeman, Montana; 6 grandchildren, Kirk Nesbitt and wife, Leslie of Houston, Mark Nesbitt of Houston, Burke Burnett of Paris, James Holland of Houston, J.D. Holland of Houston, and Carrie Holland McGivern and husband, Jeff of Phoenix, Arizona; 2 great-grandchildren, Loren and Ashlen Holland; one brother, Thomas Burnett; and nieces, Sharon Wright and husband, Mike, Peggy Anderson and husband, Don, Jo Black, and Leslie Towers.
