Charles Wayne Smith

Charles Wayne Smith, 59, of Paris passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at which time Bright-Holland received him into their care.

Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Hickory Grove cemetery.

He was born May 29, 1945, in Lamar County. He was retired from the petroleum industry and was a member of Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Bonnie Bell Layton Smith; two sons, Elvin Leon Smith and John Raymond Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Sue, whom he married on May 6, 1972, in Dumas; one daughter, Kay Smith; two sisters, Ella Dorene Srader and husband, H.P., and Della Florene Srader; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Alma Madine Stephens Ailes

COOPER — Alma Madine Stephens Ailes, 66, of Sulphur Springs passed away Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at her home.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday in East Delta Baptist Church with the Rev. Dverle Archer and the Rev. Don Shaw officiating. Burial follows in East Delta cemetery under the direction of Delta Funeral Home.

She was born in Kensing on July 1, 1934, the daughter of Etheridge Henry and Mary Alice Clark Stephens. She married Billy Joe Ailes on May 26, 1951, in Texarkana, Ark. She had lived in Sulphur Springs since 1956.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Joe Ailes of Sulphur Springs; son, Billy Don Ailes of Birthright; daughter, Debbie Allison of Sulphur Springs; six sisters, Pearl Smith of Lake Creek, Clara Lee Kelley of Grand Prairie, Margie Spears of Terrell, Bearl Sneed of Grand Prairie, Stella Tucker of Plano and Comelia Boss of Granbury; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

James N. “Tate” Sweeden

CLARKSVILLE — James N. “Tate” Sweeden, 72, of Clarksville died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in Presbyterian Hospital.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, in Lindeman Chapel with the Rev. James Brown officiating. Interment follows in Fairview cemetery under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.

The family receives friends from 1 p.m. until service time.

He was born Feb. 19, 1932, in Red River County, the son of W.A. and Bertha Pyles Sweeden. He was a real estate broker. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Texas National Guard.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a dear friend, Maxine Wilkins of Garland; a son, J.T. Sweeden and wife, Karen, of Greenbrier, Ark.; a grandson, Kevin Sweeden of Greenbrier; sisters, Cornelia Raulston of Clarksville and Cecile and Jones Roberts, of Sulphur Springs; four nephews; and one niece.

Stanley L. Samples

Stanley L. Samples, 67, of Powderly passed away peacefully at his home Monday, Nov. 22, 2004.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Matt Gaston officiating. Burial follows at Detroit cemetery under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.

He was born July, 15, 1937, in Oklahoma City to Faye Nolen and Roy Lee Samples. He was a graduate of Central High School in Oklahoma City and the University of Oklahoma School of Engineering. During his career, he was employed by several technological companies in the Dallas area. He was married in 1967 in Dallas to Cynthia Carpenter. They moved to the Paris area from Plano upon their retirement in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia; his mother, Faye Savage, of Oklahoma City; a son, Michael Samples and wife, Keri, of Richardson; a daughter, Claudia Harris and husband, Kyle, of Powderly; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Reva Maddox

Reva Maddox, 84, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at her home surrounded by family.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday Nov. 24, in the chapel of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Starnes officiating.

She was born on Oct. 1, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Edward and Freda Doum. She grew up in Sausalito, Calif., and attended the University of California at Berkeley. She served as Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1944-1945 during World War II and met her husband, Jack, in Honolulu, Hawaii, when both were on R & R. They were married July 24, 1946, in San Francisco, Calif. She was a past member of the Gordon Country Club, Paris Golf & Country Club, Paris Garden Club and Carousel Dance Club, and in particular loved her bridge club and many friends. She was a former owner of the Beauty Boutique and retired from Flex-O-Lite. The family wishes to thank Margaret Farrell for her many kindnesses and care for Reva.

She is survived by Jack, her husband of 58 years; and beloved son, Clint Maddox and wife, Pat; daughters, Cassie Townsend and husband, Tommy, and Pamela Maddox. She was a proud Granny to Steven and Jeff Maddox, Justin, Trent and Blair Townsend, all of Austin, and Chris Barnes and wife, Samantha, of Flower Mound, and granddaughter, Kellee Barnes of Dallas; and her great grandchildren, Taylor and Riley.

If desired in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Joe Clark Ware

Joe Clark Ware, 82, of Paris passed away Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at his home at which time Bright-Holland Funeral Home received him into its care.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dean Hill officiating. Burial follows in Meadowbrook Gardens.

The family receives friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Petty, the son of John Wesley and North Carolina Plemons Ware. He married Gladys Mae Townsend on Nov. 23, 1941. He had owned and operated two transmission shops in Paris as well as two used car dealerships. He was a master mechanic, welder and paint and body shop technician. He owned and operated a transportation service and air taxi service for 54 funeral homes as well as area businesses and corporations. He had been a pilot for many years, and flying was a great joy to him. He was a member of Ramseur Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, on Jan. 20, 1983; his parents; sisters, Mattie Lou Fox and husband, Marvin, Mary Nadine Nicholson and husband, Lloyd Clifton, Ollie Mae Chaney and husband, Ray and Eula Belle Ware; a great-nephew, Nicholas Clifton Nicholson; and a brother-in-law, Earl Burke.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; step-daughter, Narissa Wright Barrett of Paris; step-son, Kelvin A. Wright of Elk City, Okla; one sister, Johnnye Burke of Tow; one sister-in-law, Sharon Thornton of Paris; nieces and nephews, Lloyd Nicholson and wife, Nina Gene, of Honey Grove, Larry Chaney and wife, Judy, of Soper, Okla., Ann Tomblin and husband, Wayne, of Paris, Annette Walles and husband, Rod, Donna Pearson and husband, Alec, and Wanda Simpson and husband, L.R. Jr.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Emillio G. Garcia

HONEY GROVE — Emillio G. Garcia, 83, of Honey Grove died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004.

Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Self’s Church of Christ with Clarice Banker and Emery Banker officiating. Interment follows in Allen’s Point under the direction of Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home.

The family receives friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Merle Cawthon

Merle Cawthon, 87, of Silsbee died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, in Callier Park in Beaumont.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home with Elmer L’Roy officiating. Private interment follows.

She was a native of Rugby, and a longtime resident of the Silsbee area. She was owner of a bookstore in Paris until 1967. She taught school in Talco and Bogata and at Silsbee Junior High until 1990.

Survivors include her son, Art Cawthon and wife, Deanna, of Beaumont; daughter, Ann Saam and husband, Steven, of Mount Pleasant; grandchildren, Rob and Christi Woodruff; and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Christopher and Keely Woodruff.

Bobby Gene Mills

Bobby Gene Mills, 70, of Paris died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at his residence.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Taylor officiating. Interment follows in Highland cemetery in Deport.

He was born March 7, 1934, the son of Wro. and Rosalee Mills. He worked as a machine operator for Precision Packing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 11 years, Martha Sue Brooks, in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Terry and Tracy Mills; one daughter, Tammy Mills; one brother, Jimmy Mills; five sisters, Dean Mills, Linda Wilkerson, Pearl Sneed, Betty Jones and Mary Ann Ballard.

Mallie O. Goyne

Mallie O. Goyne, 89, of Paris departed to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Paris Regional Medical Center, at which time Bright Holland Funeral Home received her into their care.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Don Brown officiated. Burial follows at Highland cemetery in Deport.

The family receives friends 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

She was born May 20, 1915, the daughter of John Anderson and Ella May Wells Wright in Deport. She graduated high school in Deport. Many years ago, when the Stamps Baxter Quartet came to Paris, they had a contest and she won first place as a soloist. She was a member of Ramseur Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She worked at Ayers Department store for many years and had many friends that worked there. She never met a stranger and had many friends. She loved everyone.

She married Homer Roe Barnard in 1933. He was killed in a car accident in 1939. She later married Roy R. Goyne in 1945 in Hugo, Okla. He preceded her in death in 1970. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Clara and Beatrice Wright; and a brother, Lawrence Wright.

Survivors include one son; Norman Barnard; one daughter, Betty Potter and husband, Donnie; grandchildren, Judith Barnard Downs and husband, Ricky, Tammy and Doug Vaughn, Lisa and Doug Grant, Jennifer and Tom St. John, Lee and Terry Potter; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces, Martha Fagan, Judy and Sydney Richey, Laurie and Don Brown, Nelda and Bruce Melton; and other relatives and friends.
