Oleta was much beloved as wife and mother, grandmother and friend. Oleta Kelley McSpadden was the daughter of Clarence V. and Berda Lee Kelley, born in Florence on Oct. 22, 1916. She was a graduate of Lubbock High and of Texas Tech, where she majored in Spanish and English. She taught high school in Perryton, where she also coached girls' volleyball and basketball and served as teacher sponsor of both the school paper and yearbook.

She married Thomas Willard McSpadden, son of Terrell Williamson and Josie Gaines McSpadden of Lamesa, on August 21, 1940. They were based in California during World War II, where he was stationed as a captain in the Army Air Corps. She then made a home for her family in a series of small West Texas oil field towns such as Andrews, Odessa and Notrees, where "Mac" worked in the oil fields as a petroleum engineer with Amoco.

The McSpaddens lived in Tulsa, Okla. from 1954 to his death in 1998.

During these years, Oleta was an active member of First Baptist Church, a volunteer Spanish teacher in the schools, and a leader in the American Association of University Women, elected president of the Tulsa chapter and secretary of the Oklahoma AAUW. Their home was always open to friends and neighbors, sure to find there a good story from Mac and a warm serving of Oleta's famous coffee cake or plate of homemade fudge. Oleta was much-beloved as a friend, cherished by her Tulsa "lunch bunch," many of them friends for over 50 years.

Calf Canyon, N.M. was also home, and she will be deeply missed by everyone there, especially those who every year looked forward to her blueberry pies. She returned to Lubbock in 2001 and was blessed to live near her son and daughter-in-law and granddaughters. In Lubbock, she has been active in her neighborhood, PEO and Southcrest Baptist Church.

After Mac's death, which was a huge loss to everyone, 'Leta always said, "There must be a reason I'm still here," and she saw that reason as being present for and supportive of her children and grandchildren - through happy times and sad. She was always there to listen; we were blessed by her strength. The family is very grateful for the generous support and care Oleta's many friends provided to make her years in Lubbock happy ones.

Memorials are suggested to Women's Protective Services or to the charity of their choice.
