Melva Miller Pate

Melva Miller Pate was born November 5, 1922 in Allen, Oklahoma and graduated from Erick High School. She married Roy I. Pate, June 27, 1952 in Ft. Worth. He died June 20, 2001. She was a volunteer at St. Mary?s Hospital and was active with the National Greyhound Association for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Amelia (Amy) and husband, Jack Chapman of Ransom Canyon; a son, Billy Roy and wife, Olivia Pate of Atlanta, Ga.; 3 grandchildren, Clint and Kyle Smith of Lubbock and Jennifer and husband, Wade Neyland of Franklin; 3 great grandchildren, Lacy, Janie and Pate Neyland along with many close friends.

She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Roger and Glenn Miller

The family suggests memorials to the Roger Miller Museum, P.O. Box 464, Erick, Ok, 73645.

She died Thursday, September 25, 2003 at the age of 80.

Ruth Amanda Simonton

Ruth Simonton, age 92, of Boerne, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2003. She was born on March 6, 1911, in Dibol, TX, the daughter of James B. and Mollie Johnson Prewitt. A resident of Boerne for 10 years, she had moved from Buchanan Dam, Texas. preceded in death by her husband W. C. Simonton in 1989, Mrs. Simonton is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews. A local great niece is Lana Cade of Boerne. Funeral Services and Burial were held in Houston on Sunday, June 1st.

Lou Clark

Lou E. Clark, 74, of Lubbock passed from this life on Friday, July 23, 2010 in Lubbock, Texas. She was the daughter of L. D. “Bud” and Dollie Edgeworth Smith, born March 23, 1936 in Baird, Texas. She moved to Lubbock in 1949. Lou had many interests. She owned and operated restaurants for some time. She became the first women in Texas to receive the Outstanding Restaurateur of the Year award.

Lou married W. H. Clark, Jr. on June 23, 1975. Lou retired from the restaurant business and founded The Frame Mart and Gallery in 1981.

Lou enjoyed reading, cooking and gardening. Lou was an avid bowler for more than 50 years in Lubbock. She loved to travel to state and national bowling tournaments, rarely missing any. She held many offices in the bowling association. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame, member Emeritus and life time member of the USBC. She was a great supporter of Lady Raider Basketball and in years past, the Lubbock Hubbers Baseball team. She loved traveling with her family, especially her grandchildren. She had many friends who remember her gentleness and kindness.

Survivors include her husband, W. H. Clark, Jr.; 4 stepsons, Mark (Deborah) Clark, Ted (Gayla) Clark both of Lubbock, Jim Tryheart of New Mexico, and Gary Tryheart of Nevada; 3 sisters, Allena Mason, Wanda Holden, and Barbara (Van) York; 3 brothers, Richard Smith, Jimmy (Sheryl) Smith and Orval (Anita) Smith; 5 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Sanders Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Justin Osborne officiating. Burial will follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Sanders on Monday evening from 5-7:00 p.m.

Allen Kenley

Services for Allen Kenley, 66, of Lubbock will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at First United Methodist Church-Bowman Chapel. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m., Monday at Sanders Funeral Home.

Allen left this life on July 9, 2010 after a lengthy illness. Allen was born April 25, 1944 in Norfolk, Virginia to Brents and Elliotte Kenley. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1962 and attended Texas Tech Univeristy. Allen owned and operated Acme Bolt & Supply since 1957. He married Joan Smith on July 8, 1995 in Lubbock, TX. Allen was a member of the First United Methodist Church; the Lions Club, the Transportation Club, active member of Alpha Phi Omega and he was involved in many civic activities including establishing the Lubbock Eye Bank.

Loved ones include his wife, Joan; daughter, Rhonda Feron and husband, Kevin; daughter, Tamara Hwang and fiancé, Jeremy Beneze; grandsons, Brents and Blake Feron.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Buy a Brick Building Fund, 1411 Broadway Ave., Lubbock, TX 79401 or the National Kidney Foundation of West Texas, 4601 Ste. 101, Lubbock, TX 79414.

Frances Johnson Key

Services for Faye Johnson Key will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday September 20, 2010 at Sanders Memorial Chapel with Reverend Calvin Gray officiating. Interment will follow at City of Lubbock cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Family will receive friends at the Sanders Funeral Home, 1420 Main St, on Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.

Faye was born May 19, 1918 in Taiban, NM to Lore Lee and Ella Elizabeth Johnson. On September 16, 2010, at the age of 92, she went to be with her heavenly Father and is being welcomed by the loved ones who have gone before her.

Faye grew up on a farm but soon became a business woman and was employed by the City of Lubbock in the Data Processing/Payroll Department for 34 years 7 months when she retired at age 73. Faye enjoyed camping, shopping, but she loved entertaining children and traveling. She was always with the children at Christmas time.

Faye is preceded in death by her husband, James D. Key; parents; brother, Raymond Johnson; and sister, Doll Jones. Survivors include sisters, Lillian Peck and Frances Brown (Harold); brother, Pete Johnson (Barbara); step children, Jimmy Key, Sr. (Velma), Shirley Farrow (James), and Tommy Key (Fleda); nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of close friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to her church, New Home Baptist Church, P.O. Box 158, New Home, TX 79383, or the charity of your choice.

Ann Pritz

Ann Pritz, age 97, a San Antonio resident for 4 years, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2003. Born in Springfield, Illinois, on March 23, 1906, she was the Daughter of Nathan and Vashti Foster. Originally from Denver, Colorado, before moving to Boerne she had lived in Plano, TX, for over 25 years where she was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church of Garland, TX. She was also a member of the Order of the Easter Star. preceded in death by her Husband, Dr. Robert W. Pritz, Sr. in 1961, Mrs. Pritz is survived by her Son, Dr. Robert W. Pritz, Jr. and his wife, Freda of San Antonio; Grandson, Robert W. Pritz, III and his Wife, Yvonne, of Houston; Great Grandchildren, Blake Pritz and his Wife, Mary, and Allison Pritz; Great Great Grandchildren, Madison, Parker, and Kaylee Pritz. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Ardellia Thomas Reno Jones

Ardellia Thomas Reno Jones, 87, went to be with her Father in heaven on Monday, Sep 20th. Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, the 23rd of Sep in Bowman Chapel at First United Methodist Church at 1411 Broadway. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 at Sander’s Funeral Home.

Ardellia was born October 1, 1922 in Coppell Texas to Lawrence and Hattie Gentry Thomas. She attended schools in Clinton and Floyd Texas. Even though she was small in stature she was big in attitude and was the captain of her basketball team and a star on the defense. Her family had one of the first cars in their small community and she learned to drive when she was 13. She had to sit on books to make her tall enough to see over the steering wheel. She was always ready to go when needed and loved to shop, travel and play with her children and grandchildren.

On Sep. 18, 1939, Ardellia married Fred Reno in Greenville, TX. They farmed in the Caddo Mills area before moving to West Texas to farm. Ardellia is survived by three children, daughters Danella Reno Dickson, husband Bill Dickson, Debbie Reno deTournillon, husband Bill deTournillon, all of Lubbock and son Robbie Reno of Shallowater; five grandchildren, Paul Christensen, Nikki Morgan, Lydia Dickson, Tonya Reno and Trey deTournillon; and four great grandchildren.

Ardellia married R.E. Jones of Lubbock in 1965, and was married to R.E. until his death in May of 1994. They farmed in the Lubbock area. Ardellia always helped on the farm, she would pull two cotton trailers at a time from the farms to the gin in the center of town. She took doing this difficult and nerve racking job for granted, knowing that it needed to be done and it would allow the men to continue working in the fields.

She was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church and a lifetime Baptist, but after she stopped driving, she attended FUMC with her daughter. She was a long time member of the Stephen W. Wilkinson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Kerenhappuch Norman Chapter of Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. She had beautiful gardens, was a member of several gardening groups, and loved Marsha Sharp’s Lady Raiders.

Ardellia was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Stanly Thomas, a sister Fredna Thomas Weatherly, a grandson Dennis deTournillon and two husbands, Fred Reno and R.E. Jones.

The family would like to thank all of her caregivers, Darryl, Lynn, Katie and Brenda at Wedgewood South. We would also like to thank Scott and Carolyn Herron of the Porch Swing and staff members Maricela, Priscilla, Linda and Amy for making our mother’s last 18 months a blessing. In addition we would like to thank Hospice of Lubbock, especially Heidi, Elizabeth, Rose, Serena and Hospice Volunteer Joyce Hicks. Special thanks to Greg Goodnight for the joy that his harp brought our mother in her final days. We will miss her but know that we will see her again.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ardellia’s memory to one of the following groups: Family Guidance and Outreach Center of Lubbock, Hospice of Lubbock or the South Plains Genealogical Society.

William Shockley

William Ernest “Wild Bill” Shockley, MAJ, USAF (ret), died on July 7, 2010, at the age of 87, at his home in Lubbock, Texas.

Bill was born on October 23, 1922, in Paducah, Texas, and grew up in Texas. He joined the Army Air Corp on November 18, 1940, at the age of 17, making him the first volunteer from Chavez County, TX to enlist under President Roosevelt’s Selective Service Act. This Act called for men to register for the draft in November, 1940 for a one-year hitch, but Bill just kept extending. He served with the 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX, and was stationed in England in 1942-43. He returned to the U.S., he took liaison pilot training and became a member of the “Flying Sergeants”, and earned the nickname “Wild Bill” due to his daring escapades.

He was stationed in China in 1947, and in Korea, where he was designated the first expert director in the Eastern Air Defense Force. After Korea, he went to Formosa, and was stationed at a Pescadores Islands radar site. He undertook radar training at Panama City, Florida, in 1953. In 1958 he returned to Roswell, NM, served with the Strategic Air Command, 686th AC&W Squadron as a weapons controller at Walker AFB. He spent time in Germany in 1962-63, and retired from the Air Force on August 1, 1968.

He married Lillian Mertie Baker in 1947. He is survived by his eight children: Sandra Jean, Barbara Ann, William Ernest, Jr., Leslie Michael, Patrick Samuel, Daniel Ray, James Timothy, and Michael Paul, as well as siblings Ray Wesley, Betty Francis, and Carroll Dean. He is predeceased by his parents, Samuel Ernest Shockley and Mary Etta Elledge, daughter, Teresa Elaine, and siblings Abigail Inez, Raymond Leslie, and Mildred Jean.

Visitation for friends and family is scheduled for Sunday, July 11th, 2010, from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, at Sanders Funeral Home, 1420 Main Street, Lubbock, TX, 79401. Graveside services are scheduled for Monday, July 12, 2010, at 10:30am, at the City of Lubbock cemetery, 2011 31st St., Lubbock, Texas.

James Rowlette

Graveside services for James Michael Rowlette of Lubbock will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at City of Lubbock cemetery with Dr. Keith Wiseman officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

James passed away July 5, 2010 at Covenant Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born on November 10, 1953 in Edmond, OK and was a 1972 graduate of Coronado High School and attended South Plains College. James enjoyed restoring antique cars and playing with his dogs. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

James was preceded in death by his father, Grover F. Rowlette. Survivors include his mother, Mary F. Rowlette of Lubbock; brother, Tim Rowlette and wife Rebel; niece Kacie Rowlette; and nephew, Jarrod Rowlette, all of Midlothian, TX.
