Charles Anthony Peyton

Charles Anthony Peyton died July 23, 2007 in Midland, Texas at 85 years of age. Tony was born in Elyria, Ohio on March 3rd, 1922. After earning a bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. navy at the beginning of World War II and became one of the first twenty black men to earn the rank of Ensign in the U.S. Navy.

Prior to WW II Tony started his career in basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters, "when the Globetrotters were a serious team and not a team of clowns." He was the last surviving member of the original team. He retired from basketball in 1956. he was installed in the Basketball Hall of Fame, Springfield, Mass., in 1996. He moved to Lubbock, Texas in about 1988. He was active in youth groups, passing on his basketball knowledge and experience to the youth of the Lubbock Community. He was also an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in which he had been ordained to the office of High Priest. He moved to Midland, Texas in 2001.

He married first, Chulla Hutchinson who bore him two children, Leonard Peyton and Marilyn Peyton. His second wife, Marlowe Ann Goins, died in childbirth, leaving him a daughter, Antio Marlowe Peyton. He married a third time to Neville Diane Sires. That union produced two sons, Tyler Anthony Peyton and Terrance Anthony Peyton. He is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John Richard (Dick) Fowle

Services for John Richard (Dick) Fowler, 80, of Memphis, Texas, will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Memphis, Texas, with Tom Posey, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery under the direction of Hughs Funeral Home in Memphis, Texas.

Mr. Fowler died on Friday, March 23, 2007 in Memphis, Texas.

Dick was born on Feb. 17, 1927 in Sayre, Okla. to the late Mr. John Fowler and Mrs. Ruth (Garrett) Fowler. He graduated from high school in Petersburg, and the University of Texas in Austin, with a BS in Pharmacy. He worked as a registered pharmacist for 50 years and for most of his career was partner and pharmacist with his father, John and brother, Bob, at Fowler Drug in Memphis, Texas. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy and an active member of the First Christian Church in Memphis. He served for many years on the Memphis school board and was past president of the Memphis Lions Club, the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, the West Texas Pharmaceutical Association, and the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. He also served on the board of the Red River Authority of Texas and was currently a member of the Memphis City Council. On Oct. 6, 2003, he received his 50 year Masonic pin.

Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise Fowler of Memphis, Texas; three children, Roge Fowler and wife Cathy of Perkins, Okla., Paul Fowler and wife Rhonda of Claremore, Okla., Julie Fowler Thrash and husband Howard of Lubbock; five grandchildren, Jesse Fowler of Stillwater, Okla., Jared Fowler of Norman, Okla., Garrett Fowler of Claremore, Okla., and Gibson and John Thomas Thrash of Lubbock. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Fowler of Memphis, Texas.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to a favorite charity.

Ignacio Perez

Ignacio Perez of Tahoka passed from this life on Friday, March 23, 2007, at the age of 65. He was born on July 31, 1941, in Cotulla, to the late Modesto and Ysabel (Rodriquez) Perez. Ignacio retired from farming in 2002.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, Ignacio, Jr. and Albert Perez, both of Lubbock; three daughters, Mary Bustillos of El Paso, Lilia Enriquez of Lubbock and Josie Irias of Abilene; one brother, Ben Perez of New Home; and five grandchildren.

Rosary will be recited from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2007, at White Memorial Chapel, in Lubbock. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, March 26, 2007, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, with Rev. Gerard Kenney as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Nevels Memorial cemetery in Tahoka.

The family suggest that memorials be sent to Vista Care Hospice, 1010 Slide Rd., Lubbock, Texas 79416.

Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Armour Ross Meador, Jr

Armour Ross Meador, Jr. was born on March 9, 1916 in Denison, Texas. After growing up and attending schools in San Antonio, he went to Texas A & M, graduating in 1937 with a degree in Animal Husbandry. While at A & M, he was a member of the Polo team, Captain of the Rifle team, Battery Commander of D Troup of the Calvary division of the Corps and Second in Command of the Ross Volunteers.

After college he began farming in Buda, Texas and in 1941 he met and married Brenner Hammann of Austin. They were married 58 years and 8 months when Brenner died on March 3, 2000. Soon after their marriage, Ross went into active duty in the US Army 1st Calvary Division at the rank of Captain. Most of his military years were spent at Ft. Riley, Kansas where his main responsibility was training troops for combat. He was on his way to Japan when WWII ended.

He returned to farm in Buda until 1948 when he moved to West Texas to begin farming in Idalou. He farmed in the Petersburg, Cotton Center and Idalou areas until he retired in 1983, moving to Lubbock in 1994.

Ross was a member of the Idalou United Methodist Church for 46 years where he served in many leadership roles and taught Sunday school. He transferred his membership to First United Methodist Church Lubbock when he and Brenner moved to Lubbock and was a member of the Homebuilders Sunday School class. He was also a member of the FUMC Men's Prayer group. He was a very active member of the Llano Estacado Emmaeus Community. His passion was deer hunting and he spent as much time as he could at the family ranch near Encinal, Texas. After his retirement, he dedicated much of his time to visiting friends and delivering roses to them when they were in the hospital or in nursing homes.

Services for Ross will be held on Monday, March 26, 2007 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church Lubbock, with visitation one hour before service time in the parlor. Officiating at the service will be Reverend Keith Wiseman and Reverend Bruce Parks. Burial will follow in the Idalou cemetery under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors. Mr. Meador died Sat. March 24, 2007.

Ross is survived by his son, Bob Meador of Rockport, Texas and his daughter Molly Meador Hall of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Melissa and Michael Meador and Meador and Caroline Hall. His survivors also include his brothers, Henry Meador of San Antonio, Bruce Meador of La Jolla, California and David Meador of Thailand and his sisters Maxine Short of Kerrville, Texas and Pat Barrett of Midkiff, Texas and special friend Lillian Robertson. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and two sisters.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Everliving Church Trust Fund, 1411 Broadway, Lubbock, Texas 79401 or to VistaCare Hospice, 1717 Norfolk Avenue, Suite A, Lubbock, Texas 79416.

Pat Harrison Donley

December 8, 1942 to March 24, 2007

Christian, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Son, Brother, Minister, Counselor, Teacher, Mentor, Friend, Encourager, Youth Director, Joker, Forensic Chemist, Investigator, Expert Witness, Salesman, Volunteer Deputy Sheriff, Soccer Coach, Cook, Supporter of the Red Raiders, Saddle Tramps and Westerners.

A life well-lived and well-loved, we'll miss you until we see you again.

Pat is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Paula; five children: Tiffany Kavanaugh, Patrick and Beth Joy Donley, Benjamin and Stephanie Donley; two grandchildren, Ashley and Sean Kavanaugh; his mother, Margaret Donley, and his sister and brother-in-law, Lou Ann and Senn Slemmons. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and relatives, as well as a large and loving family from St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he served as a teacher and lay minister for thirty-eight years.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday March 27, 2007 at Resthaven Memorial Park. A celebration of his life will be held at 3:30 p.m. in St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6 -7 p.m., Monday at Sanders Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Kidney Association, St. Luke's United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.

Maria R. Hernandez

Rosary for Maria R. Hernandez, 72, of Lubbock will be today at 7 p.m. at Calvillo Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral mass will be on Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father Andres Mendoza officiating. Burial will be at the City of Lubbock cemetery under the direction of Calvillo Funeral Home.

Maria died Saturday, March 24, 2007. She was born on March 10, 1935 to the late Dore and Valentina Rodriguez in Matagorda County Texas. She married Raul C. Hernandez on March 9, 1959 in Lubbock; he preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 2004. She moved to Lubbock in 1946 from Devine, Texas. She was a Cursillsta, a Guadalupana, and a Prayer Minister.

She is preceded in death by a daughter Guadalupe Hernandez in 1970; three sisters, Dora Rodriguez 1963, Carmen Maldonado 1981 and Lupe Gonzales 2005; two brothers Pete Rodriguez 2003 and Delfino Rodriguez 2007; a grand daughter J-Lynn Hernandez 2006.

Survivors include five daughters Ritha and husband Ismael Hernandez, Linda and husband Vicente Lopez, Martha Hernandez, and Christina Hernandez all of Lubbock, Olga and husband Joe Tijerina of Elgin, Texas; two brothers, Jimmy Rodriguez of Slaton and Chris Rodriguez of Lubbock; four sisters, Sandy of Wolfforth, Janie Garcia and Ramona Garcia both of Lubbock, Felicita Garza of Fredericksburg, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Dr. Alfred (Ray) Farmer

Dr. Alfred (Ray) Farmer of Lubbock passed away at his home Friday, March 23, following a brief illness. Dr. Farmer was 49. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Ted Dotts, 10 a.m., Monday at First United Methodist Church, 1411 Broadway. Interment will follow at Resthaven cemetery.

Ray was born in Dallas on Sept. 17, 1957 to Bernice and Alfred Farmer. He attended North Texas State University and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Dallas, continuing his graduate education at Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He then entered the Pediatric Residency Program at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, where he also served as Pediatric Chief Resident. At the time of his death, Dr. Farmer was Chief Medical Officer of the Covenant Children's Hospital in Lubbock.

Dr. Farmer was active in the medical and civic community. He was a member of the Texas Pediatric Society, Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics-Fellow, Lubbock Pediatric Society, American Society of Clinical Pathologist-MT Division; and the American Society of Medical Technology. In addition, he was a member of Smokeless Lubbock Coalition, Lubbock Youth Obesity Coalition, and Covenant Health System-Bioethics Committee. Dr. Farmer was honored as the recipient of the Outstanding Resident, Chief Resident, Pediatrics, and Best Lubbock Pediatrician.

In the course of a distinguished medical career, Dr. Farmer participated as Physician Fair Hearing Panel-SMPH, HMO Blue-West Texas Medicaid Division Physician Advisory Committee, OB Task Force Committee (SMPH/Methodist Merger, Consolidation Task Force Methodist Children's Hospital Committee Co-Chairman; Director of Outreach Programs-Covenant Children's Hospital; Medical Executive Committee; Covenant Medical Group Finance & retirement Committee, Mission & Mentoring Program, Values & Action Committee, Vice Chief of Staff, Credentials Committee, Covenant Partnership Forum, AHEC-Area Health Education Center Mentor in Plainview, Facilities Planning Committee for Women's Children Hospital Expansion Project; Chief of Staff and Covenant Health System-Physician Hospital Partnership Board member-Treasure.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice and Alfred Farmer, and brother, Steve Farmer. He is survived by his partner Wayne Turney; his son Austin and daughter Abby Farmer, Paula Farmer, the loving mother of his children, all of Lubbock; sister Ruthie and brother- in- law Howard Schindler of Forney Texas; sister Vickie and brother- in- law Steve Tucker of Cumby Texas, and brother David Owens of Mesquite, Texas.

The family would like to thank the physicians, staff and administration at Covenant Health Systems, Joe Arrington Cancer Center, and Covenant Children's Hospital, and to patients and friends for their many kindnesses and support throughout this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Ray Farmer Pediatric Assistance Fund, c/o Covenant Health System Foundation, 3623 22nd Place, Lubbock, Texas 79410.

Maisie Patsy McDonald

Funeral services for Maisie Patsy McDonald, 70, of Amarillo will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel with Rev. Jerry Bell officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens cemetery

Mrs. McDonald died March 24th after an extended illness. She was born Aug. 15, 1936 to the late Phillip Gayarre and Virgie Gayarre in Helena, Arkansas. She married Wilton E. McDonald in Amarillo, Texas on Dec. 23, 1954.

She attended West Texas State University and graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education in December, 1970. Over the next 25 years she taught school in Amarillo ISD, Springlake ISD, Littlefield ISD and Lubbock ISD. She retired from Dupree Elementary School in Lubbock on Dec. 22, 1994.

The McDonald family offers their special thanks to all the wonderful staff and volunteers at BSA Hospice for their compassion and excellent care.

Survivors include husband, Wilton McDonald of the home; one son, Wilton E. (Ed) McDonald and wife, Pamela of Amarillo; 5 sisters, Virginia Jennings of Friona, Willene Walden of Amarillo, Phyllis Stiedle of West Helena, Ark., Kathleen Burns of Chicago, Ill., Cleo Kay Lefebvre of Wappinger Falls, NY; two grandsons, Austin and Michael McDonald of Amarillo; one step-granddaughter, Savana Breding of Amarillo.
