Owen, Sr. and Alta Mae Vina (Bell) Owen, and one brother, Lewis Melvin Owen.
Robert and his wife, Virginia, were steadfast and loyal in their love and devotion to one another for 60 years. They met in high school in Sinton, Texas and became engaged to be married
in the fall of 1947. Virginia was a loyal supporter of Robert in all of his endeavors. When she decided to return to college after their youngest son entered school, he supported her wholeheartedly. Years later, even in light of Robert having bought Virginia a bird dog puppy and a new shotgun for her birthday, they continued their love and devotion to one another in all their varied pursuits. Throughout these recent-nearly four-years of serious illness, she remained constantly at his side, providing loving care and devotion.
Robert graduated from Sinton High School and married
Virginia Jean McGrath Hightower Dec. 22, 1947, in Sinton, Texas, while he was a student at Texas A&M; ('48). He completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at age 21 and was commissioned Captain in the United States Army Reserve. He began his veterinary practice in Cuero, Texas, and in 1951, bought a practice in Schulenburg, Texas and practiced there until 1965.
While in Schulenburg, Dr. Owen was involved in numerous community activities and organizations. He was a thirty-third degree Mason and past-master of the Lyons Lodge 195, AF&AM.; He and a committee of citizens were instrumental in re-establishing Schulenburg's Boy Scout Troop 210. Dr. Owen served as Scoutmaster of the troop for several years and received numerous awards for his Scouting leadership. He was a member of the Jaycees and the Lions Club. He was also active in the Young Farmers Association and donated time and services as a friend to the Future Farmers of America.
In 1965, Dr. Owen sold his veterinary practice and began working for the United States Department of Agriculture in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The family moved to Center, Texas in 1967, where Dr. Owen became the veterinarian in charge of inspection at a poultry packing plant. In 1973, the family moved to Lubbock, Texas, where he became the circuit supervisor of inspection services for beef packing plants in the Texas Panhandle and eastern New Mexico. Dr. Owen retired from Federal Service in 1989 and continued to live in Lubbock until the close of 2004 when Robert and Virginia moved to Boerne, Texas.
Throughout his life Doc was an avid camper, hunter, and angler, as well as a modest collector of sporting arms. He hunted and fished the Coastal Bend and Brush Country of Texas, the East Texas Piney Woods, the Hill Country of Texas, the South Plains, the Rolling Plains, the mountains and mesas of Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and the wilderness of Canada. He enjoyed the challenge of catching the smallest perch, and the largest redfish. He reveled in the lure of the hunt; taking small and large game from South Texas to Canada, including, white tailed deer, black bear, javelina, and numerous other species. As a young man, while collecting firewood on a hunt in the Texas Brush Country, he was charged by a javelina, which he killed with a single blow from a hand axe. Doc was also an excellent marksman and shooting coach. While living in Schulenburg he frequently participated in turkey shoots in the surrounding rural communities. He won the shoots so often that at times the organizers of the shoots, upon seeing him arrive at the shooting grounds, would just ask, "Doc, how many do you want today?" and then present him with the appropriate number of turkeys.
Although he frequently held Sunday morning communion with the Lord in the field, on the stream or on the open waters of Copano Bay, Doc was a steadfast member of the Baptist Church. Throughout his life he emphasized and exemplified devotion to family, faith, and community service. Robert Owen was a devoted husband and loving father who passed on the ideals and values of commitment to duty, honor and country. He was well respected, deeply loved and will be missed by many.
A visitation was held Oct. 26, 2007, from 12 till 5p.m., at Vaughan's Funeral Home of Boerne.
