Lamar Kelly
Lamar Brice Kelly of Lubbock, Texas was born in Tipton, Oklahoma to Mamie and Marion Kelly on Jan. 27, 1924 and left this life after a 3+ year battle with Alzheimer's on Oct. 7, 2007 in Lubbock, Texas. A beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, Lamar left behind a legacy that will be long remembered and touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his life's passion of education and teaching.
Lamar grew up on a family farm outside Tipton, Oklahoma. The youngest of seven children, with four brothers and two sisters, he learned at an early age the value of hard work, family, a love of the land and the importance of an education. After graduating from Laing Public school - a ìone room schoolhouseî - he continued his education by enrolling at Cameron Junior College in Lawton, Oklahoma where he played football in addition to his studies. He continued his education and football at Oklahoma A&M; (now Oklahoma State University) in Stillwater, Okla. He completed his undergraduate work at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla., where in addition to playing football, he met the young lady that would become his wife of 55 years, Mildred M. Kelly. After graduating, he accepted a position as football coach in Amherst, Texas where he would make his home for the next 35 years. During his initial years of teaching, Lamar completed his Masters at Western State University. After five years of coaching and teaching, Lamar coached at Sudan, Texas for one year before returning to Amherst ISD as high school principal. In 1961, he was named Superintendent, a position he would hold for 23 years until his retirement in 1984.
After retirement, Lamar and Mildred moved to Lubbock, where he continued to be involved in the education and growth of young people. He worked with the HONDA Cooperative to help ìat riskî youth obtain jobs where they could learn a marketable skill and become a productive member of society.
Lamar's professional affiliations included Texas State Teachers Association, American Association of School Administrators, and the Texas Association of School Administrators. He was past president of District XVII Texas Association of School Administrators, past president of the Joint Committee of Regional XVII Education Service Center, District Chairman of District 2, Class A football for 10 years, and regional spring meet committee for 15 years.
A 32nd Degree Mason for 50 years, Lamar was also a member of the Lions Club for 30+ years, deputy district governor in 1965-1966 and a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Cancer Society.
Lamar is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred M. Kelly; daughter Kathy L. Mitchell and her husband, Wesley of Lubbock; son, Mark Kelly of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Tiffany Gipson and her husband Michael, Sierra Mitchell, both of Lubbock; two grandsons, Brice and Aden Kelly, both of Austin, Texas. In addition to his four grandchildren, Lamar had two great grandchildren, Kaedence and Tristan, both of Lubbock.
Lamar was predeceased by his brothers, Orval, Elmo, Afton and Lewis, and is survived by his two sisters, Geraldine and Lucille, all of Oklahoma.
Lamar will be remembered at a memorial service to be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Lubbock, Texas at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Texas - STAR Chapter (www.alz.org/txstar), or to Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Department of Anatomy.
Ola Mae Thomas
Services for Ola Mae Thomas, 96, of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 at Shallowater First United Methodist Church with Rev. Everett Statler officiating, assisted by Rev. Jay Stinson. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thomas passed away Nov. 5, 2005 in Lubbock.
She was born Feb. 15, 1909, in Roaring Springs to the late J. C. and Rebecca Collett. She married
Commodore M. Thomas March 23, 1924 in Roaring Springs. He preceded her in death in 1980. They moved to Shallowater December 24, 1934. Ola Mae was a lifetime member of Shallowater Methodist Church and the UMW. She also served as their hospitality chairman for 20 years. She owned, operated, and cooked in the Shallowater Caf» from 1947 until her retirement in 1966.
Mrs. Thomas is preceded in death by a daughter, Madeline Thomas Kinder, in 1961, a son, Maurry Thomas in 1973, one great-granddaughter, one great-grandson, and one great great grandson.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Orilla Jernigan of Slaton and Wyoma Burleson of Lubbock; one son B. J. Thomas of Lubbock; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6-8 p.m.

Bob Sweeney
Services for Bob Sweeney, 76, of Levelland will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 at George Price Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ken Horn, pastor, Fellowship Baptist Church, Levelland, officiating. Burial will be in City of Levelland cemetery under the direction of George Price Funeral Directors.
He died at 12:37 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at Covenant Medical Center, Lubbock.
He was born on Jan. 27, 1929 in Spur. He was a lifelong resident of Levelland. He married
Theresa Droigk on March 17, 1950 in Levelland. She preceded him in death Oct. 15, 1988. He later married
Darline Norman on April 14, 1990 in Levelland. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Darline Sweeney of Levelland; a son, Mike Sweeney and his wife, Jolene, of Levelland; a daughter, Kathy Stewart and her husband, Bob, of Levelland; his aunt who raised him, Viola Keene, of Levelland; two stepdaughters, Sherry Israel and her husband, Chester and Donna Graves, both of Levelland; a sister, Peggy McLean, of Rotan, TX; a granddaughter, Melissa Nollkamper and her husband, Greg; three step grandchildren, Jeff Israel, Brian Israel and Shantelle Standifer; and two step great-grandchildren, Mercedes and Landon Standifer.
Myrna Loy Robinson
Myrna Loy Robinson, 68, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord Nov. 6, 2005 in San Angelo. Funeral Service will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 at First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev.
Mark Moeller officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount cemetery. Myrna was born July 7, 1937 in Sudan to her parents E.L. and Olan Votaw Whitmire. She worked in the banking industry for a number of years, but after retiring she devoted her time to working in the nursery in both First Baptist Church and Southland Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved being with her grandchildren, including watching the San Antonio Spurs with her grandson and teaching her granddaughter how to bake. Myrna is survived by her loving family: children, Joe Robinson and his wife Sandy, of San Angelo, Chris Robinson and his wife Rhonda, of Katy, TX., and Nancy Robinson, of Knoxville, TN; eight grandchildren, David and Rachel Robinson, of San Angelo, Benjamin, Cooper and August Robinson, of Katy, TX and Chelsea, Haley and Robert, of Knoxville, TN; one sister, Wanda Shafer and her husband Lewis Wayne, of Needmore, TX; and numerous other family members. Memorials can be made to a favorite charity.
Jesse O'Neal
Funeral services for Jesse O'Neal, 88, of Lubbock, formerly of Seminole, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, 2005 at Community Chapel with Rev. Jackie White officiating. Burial will be at Gaines County cemetery under the direction of Boyer Funeral Home.
Mr. O'Neal passed away on Nov. 4, 2005 in Lubbock following an illness.
He was born on Sept. 25, 1917 in Novice, TX. He married
Clella Barnett on Sept. 16, 1946 in Denver City, TX. She passed away in 1989. He married
Katie Koontz on Nov. 12, 1997 in Brownfield. He was a Baptist. He said he was born lucky and never stopped laughing. He was one of the first residents of Denver City, TX and resided in Seminole from 1950 to 1993, before moving to Lubbock. He was a decorated veteran of World War II. He was a member of the 2nd armored division, 41st armored infantry known as General Pattons "Hell on Wheels". He was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Bronze Arrow/Head. He retired from Shell Oil Company after 34 years as a lease operator and continued as a contract lease operator for an additional 22 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clella and two sons, Darrell Ballard and Donnie Ballard.
Survivors include his wife, Katie Koontz O'Neal of Lubbock; two daughters, Danna Dee Pentzer of Coppell and Lana Lea Seager of Dallas; one stepdaughter, Jo Harvey Allen of Santa Fe, N.M.; one brother, Boyd Allen O'Neal of McKinny; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Verdell Mitchell
Services for Verdell Mitchell, 46, of Lubbock will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 at Full Armor Ministries, 4201 Avenue J. in Lubbock.
Arrangements are under the direction of Griffin Mortuary, officiant Biship C. Slay and Eulogist, Rev. Kenneth Burns.
Mrs. Mitchell died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005.
She was the owner of Verdellís Unisex Salon.
Left to mourn her passing are: her husband, Craig; her children, Iris Teaundra Johnson, Kevin Young, Tamesha Sanders, Latisha Williams, Latoya Williams, Cradell Mitchell, and Ashley Mitchell; her mother, Iris Whitehead; her father, John Young; her grandmother, Aremetha Redman; eight brothers, Elroy Wiggins, Eddie Wiggins, David Wiggins, Robert Thompson, Charles Thomspon, Johnny Thompson, Danny Thomspon, Bobby Whitehead; two sisters, Belinda Lindsey and Renee Ferrell; 13 grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
Public visitation will be held from 12-8 p.m. at Griffin Mortuary.
