R. J. Sanders
February 26th, 1924 - April 26th, 2008
R.J. Sanders, born Feb. 26, 1924 in Atlus, Texas to John and Virgie Sanders. After moving to Ralls, Tx. in 1942 he was drafted by the US Army for military service in World War II. After his discharge he returned to Ralls where he married
Wanda Joyce Langdon on Sept. 2, 1947. They moved to Whiteface, Tx. where he owned and operated a welding and blacksmith shop. He loved to build grain elevators, farming equipment, horse/hay barns, and oil company projects. He was a member of the Whiteface and Morton, Church of the Harvest Assemblies of God. He served as song leader, Sunday school teacher and a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Billy.
He is survived by: Wanda Joyce his wife, two sons Wesley and Doris from Waller, Dean and Vicki Sanders from Turnertown, 3 daughters DaLoma and Don Horne from Red Oak, Donna and Randall Tanner from Lubbock, Robbie Hembree from Lubbock, one brother Joe Ed Sanders and one sister Jaquetta Gillim both of Lubbock, 12 grand children, and 12 great grandchildren.
Leonard Ray Bailey
December 22nd, 1919 - April 15th, 2008
He was born on Dec. 22, 1919 in Hale Center to the late Guy Hearne and Evelyn (Pruett) Bailey. He graduated from Hale Center High School and Abilene Christian University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. Ray married
Kathleen King on Oct. 24, 1941 in Los Angeles, CA. After they married
he taught school in Silverton and entered into the ministry in 1959. Ray ministered in Edmondson, Snyder, Abilene, Texas, and Carlsbad, NM. In 1968, the Lord called Ray to Collingswood Church of Christ in Collingswood, NJ, where he served until 1979. He accepted a position as the Health Administrator at Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad, NM. Ray and Kathleen settled in Lubbock where Ray ministered to Senior Adults at Monterey Church of Christ until 2003.
Those left to cherish Ray’s memories are his wife, Kathleen; 6 children, Mike Bailey of Ft. Worth, Carl Bailey of Houston, Tim Bailey of Austin, Terri Welch of Lubbock, Debbie Bailey of Carlsbad, NM and Bob Bailey of Lubbock; and two sisters, Evelyn Courtney of Hale Center and Willa Loomis of Placerville, CA; a brother, Jack Bailey of Sacramento, CA; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Billy J. Kinard
January 21st, 1943 - April 14th, 2008
Daniel Jackson and LaVader Kinard gave birth to Billy Jack on January 21, 1943 in Mansfield, Louisiana. Bill graduated from Floydada High School, 1961 and married
his high school sweet heart, Janette Barkowsky on June 30, 1962 in Lamesa. The young couple moved to Muleshoe, where they lived from 1962 until 1988. While residing in Muleshoe, Bill was a parts manager for Muleshoe Motor Company, served for 22 years on the Muleshoe Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member of the Kiwanis. Bill and his family moved to Lubbock from Muleshoe. He worked as parts salesperson for Gene Messer Ford from 1988 until his death. He and Janette attended Trinity Church.
Survivors include his wife, Janette; two daughters, Sherri and spouse, Greg and Lauri Garza; siblings, Roy Kinard of Roaring Springs, Marie Dahl of Hugo, Texas, Martha Green of Hugo, Texas, Danee Priddy of Euliss, Linda Baker and spouse, Stanley of Vernon; grandchildren, Jonathan Kinard, and Nicholas, Alexis, Breanna, Jeremy Briles; grand-nephew, Brandon Kinard and many other nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Dallas and Dixon Kinard.
Doyle Hewitt
March 1st, 1934 - April 5th, 2008
Doyle Robert Hewitt was born on March 1, 1934 in Whitharral to Joel and Ella (Burns) Hewitt. In 1953, Doyle graduated from Whitharral High School. The following year he joined the US Air Force, where proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in Saudi Arabia during the Korean Conflict. He married
Mary Lou Barker on Oct. 9, 1958 in Littlefield. Doyle loved farming and did so in both Hockley and Terry counties until 1980. He later worked in the oilfield as a Reverse Unit Operator. After retirement he served as a foreman for his nephew Tom Dixon’s ranch in Goldthwaite.
Doyle’s legacy will forever be the family he loved and cared for so faithfully during his lifetime. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Lou; two daughters, Trina Rice of Lubbock and Carol Coronado and spouse, Eddie of Richardson. The light of his life were his five grandchildren Christopher, Mandy, Zoe, Miranda and Vincent. Doyle’s three siblings, Jo Nell Holmes of Lubbock; his twin brother, Dale Hewitt of Whitharral and Shirley Mack of Lubbock will also cherish his memory.
Royce Gene Murphrey
August 30th, 1949 - April 4th, 2008
Royce was born August 30, 1949, in Lubbock to Jarrell and Ellen Murphrey. He graduated from Lubbock High School. He served in the US Army in Vietnam. He married
Wanda Cornett on February 12, 1972 in Brownfield.
Royce attended South Plains College and the FAA Academy. He recently retired after 25 years with FAA. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1348 and held the position of Treasurer. He loved gospel quartet music and sang with the Praise Singers at Keepers of the Flame. He was a Baptist and a Christian. He loved hunting, fishing, golf and traveling in his R.V. He was a member of the Travelin’ Elks.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brent and wife, Vaun, and Brandon; mother, Ellen, all of Lubbock; and brother, Larry and wife, Zan of Wichita Falls.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jarrell; sister, Joyce Lambert, and daughter-in-law, Tiffany Murphrey.
Milton George Gibbs
August 1st, 1937 - April 2nd, 2008
Frederick “Ned” Gibbs and Ella Mae Burleson gave birth to Milton George Gibbs on August 1, 1937 in Amarillo, Texas. Milton, or George, as he was known by his family and friends worked as a butcher at Pinkney Packing Company. He married
Mary Ellen Mobley on November 1, 1955 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Following an 18 year career as a butcher, “Milt” became a meat inspector for the USDA from 1968 until 1974. He also sold packing house supplies and heavy equipment; and hauled grocery goods for Frito Lay and Furrs. Prior to retiring in 1999, he had owned and operated a long haul trucking company. While driving the open road other truckers referred to George as “Trail Boss”.
George was happiest when he was with people. He never met a stranger and would always offer his help whenever needed. He valued friendships and family more than anything. His smile was always the biggest when his house was filled with his sons and their families. He also had a way with fixing things…..he could truly fix anything….a trait that he has passed down to his sons!! His knack for relating to anyone will be missed, but will also be remembered.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen; three sons, Martin Allan and his wife, Mary Lynne of Lakeway, Mark Christian and his wife, Evelyn of Lubbock, and Matthew Wayne and his wife, Libby of Austin; his father, Frederick “Ned” of Hereford; grandchildren, Kristy Dwyer, Kelly Gibbs, Kerrigan Gibbs, Katherine Gibbs, Austin Gibbs, Sarah Conley, Megan Gibbs, and John Paul Gibbs; a brother, Frederick Leon Gibbs and his wife, Nita of Amarillo; and a sister, Jeannie Mae Owens of Clarendon.
Becky Beazley
December 18th, 1954 - March 22nd, 2008
Rebecca Ann was born to Dorothy Ann and Wayne Ford on December 18, 1954 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Ford family moved to Lubbock in the mid 60’s from Houston. She attended Evan Jr. High and Monterey High School. Becky earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in History and a Master’s of Arts in French from Texas Tech University. Becky began her teaching career at Lubbock High School in 1985, where she taught French for twenty-three years. While teaching at Lubbock High School, she served as head of the foreign language department. Becky led her students to many first place awards in both state and national competitions. She also organized and supervised numerous Lubbock High School student trips to Europe. Becky enjoyed playing tennis at the Tennis Center of Lubbock.
Survivors include her sons, William and Joseph Beazley both of Lubbock; mother, Dorothy Ann Ford; siblings, Philip Ford of Lubbock, Tom Ford of NY, NY, and Mary Borgwat of Atlanta, GA. She is preceded in death by her father, Wayne Ford.
Ida Maudine "Dene" Manning
September 5th, 1928 - March 22nd, 2008
“Baby Dene”, the next to the youngest of five children born to Johnnie Lenvill Pritchett and George Mack Nevill was born on September 5th, 1928 in Bryan, Texas. She married
the love of her life, Paul Manning, in December of 1947 who predeceased her only four months ago.
Mrs. Manning was a member of Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock and during her lifetime was a member of churches of Christ in Madisonville, Navasota, Quitman, Littlefield, Marshall, and Texas City, Texas.
She attended Sam Houston State University, Texas Tech University, East Texas Baptist University and earned a B.S in Education. She taught school in Littlefield and LaMarque for over 20 years. People often spoke of her as the teacher who truly loved each and every child that walked through her doors. One of her former student recently wrote her to share a story about when he was sent to the principal’s office in first grade and the principal had asked him if he could tell him one good thing about himself. He replied proudly, “Mrs. Manning loves me.”
She was the recipient of numerous service awards and was the national recipient of the Freedom Foundation George Washington Medal of Honor for her outstanding work as an educator.
She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Lubbock Women’s Club, the Garden Club, PTA, and an outstanding Boy Scout Troop Leader.
She was the wife of a School Superintendent for 60 years and truly the “great woman” behind the great man. She will undoubtedly be so happy to be joining him today.
She was without a doubt our most wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, and loving friend. She blessed us each and every day of her life with her selfless, nurturing and humble spirit. She taught us the beauty of hospitality, giving, and the true meaning of agape love and generosity.
Those left to cherish her precious memory are her two children. A daughter, Paula Jon Manning Finney, and a son, Nevill Manning and wife Ann. Four grandchildren, Judson “J. Paul Manning and wife, Molly, Julie Manning Mitchell, and husband, Lance, Meredith Ann Finney, and Jon Nevill Finney, two great grandchildren, Samantha Neal Manning, and Judson Cooper Manning. A sister, Billie Nevill Turnham of Bryan and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
Janie Perez
Rosary for Juanita "Janie" Perez, 56, of Lubbock, will be today at 7 p.m. at Calvillo Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, with Father David Cruz officiating. Cremation will be under the direction of Calvillo Funeral Home.
Janie died Tuesday Jan. 1, 2008. She was born on Nov. 27, 1951 in Lubbock to the late Vicente (1969) and Lola Perez (1998). She attended Lubbock schools. She married
Rudy Perez on Feb. 5, 1967 in Lubbock. Janie worked part time for Girling Health Care and Essential Home Health. She was a Catholic and a life long resident of Lubbock. She was preceded in death by a brother Salvador "Willie" Alvarado on May 8, 2001and a sister, Rosa Garcia on Nov. 11, 1994.
Survivors include her husband, Rudy Perez, Sr., of Lubbock; three sons, Rudy Perez, Jr., Raymond Perez, and Robert Perez, all of Lubbock; a daughter, Jessica Perez, of Lubbock; three brothers, Augustine, Manuel, and Carlos Alvarado, all of Lubbock; three sisters, Maria Louisa Garcia, Betty Dominguez, and Lucy Hernandez, all of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Rudy Perez III, Xavier Perez, Christopher Perez, Jerry Smith, Henry Garcia and Joshua Perez.
Kurt Moehring
Kurt Eugene Moehring, 36, of Lubbock, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at his residence. He was born June 1, 1971.
Survivors include his wife, Christe Arendell; three daughters, Crystal, Savannah, and Allie Moehring; and one brother, Ed Degrott, of Missouri. He will be truly missed and loved by all his family, loved ones, and friends; especially by Martin Edwards.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at Griffin Mortuary. Private disposition will follow.
